Constraints On Present-Day Shortening Rate Across The Central Eastern Andes From Gps Data, Lisa Leffler, Seth Stein, Ailin Mao, Timothy H. Dixon, Michael A. Ellis, Leonidas Ocola, I. Selwyn Sacks

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Two years of continuous GPS data from several sites in South America indicate that Arequipa in the southern Peruvian Andes has a velocity of 13±3 mm/yr (two standard errors) to the northeast with respect to stable South America. We interpret these data as reflecting a combination of elastic strain accumulation associated with a locked Nazca-South America subduction zone and a small amount of crustal shortening across the fold and thrust belt on the eastern margin of the Andes. Models of elastic strain accumulation for fully locked and partly locked subduction zones constrain shortening in the eastern Andes to 0–3 mm/yr …

Evaluation Of Selected Atmospheric Indices For The Prediction Of Thunderstorms At Omaha, Nebraska, Fred Ladehoff May 1997

Evaluation Of Selected Atmospheric Indices For The Prediction Of Thunderstorms At Omaha, Nebraska, Fred Ladehoff

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

This study examines the values of five stability indices (the Showalter Index, the K Index, the Vertical Totals Index, the Cross Totals Index, and the Total Totals Index) for Omaha, Nebraska during the months of March through September, 1964 through 1973. Index means during thunderstorm periods and non-thunderstorm periods should show a distinct difference. Even though indices can be an important tool, it must be accentuated that indices should never be used as the sole factor in the prediction of thunderstorm or non-thunderstorm occurrences. This study shows that even at the highest skill scores, many mistakes would be made in …

Predictable File Access Latency For Multimedia, Dan Revel, Crispin Cowan, Dylan Mcnamee, Calton Pu, Jonathan Walpole May 1997

Predictable File Access Latency For Multimedia, Dan Revel, Crispin Cowan, Dylan Mcnamee, Calton Pu, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Multimedia applications are sensitive to I/O latency and jitter when accessing data in secondary storage. Transparent adaptive prefetching (TAP) uses software feedback to provide multimedia applications with file system quality of service (QoS) guarantees. We are investigating how QoS requirements can be communicated and how they can be met by adaptive resource management. A preliminary test of adaptive prefetching is presented.

Dephasing In Hyper-Rayleigh Scattering From Organic Materials, S. F. Hubbard, Rolfe G. Petschek, Kenneth D. Singer May 1997

Dephasing In Hyper-Rayleigh Scattering From Organic Materials, S. F. Hubbard, Rolfe G. Petschek, Kenneth D. Singer

Faculty Scholarship

The spectral content of hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) was studied with solutions of disperse red-1 (DR1) in acetone at a specific fundamental wavelength. Dephasing can occur when the effective lifetime of the virtual state approaches a two-photon resonance. Experiments were developed that will measure all six observables in HRS by observing the scattering at 45°, continuously varying the phase of the fundamental by rotating a quarter-waveplate, and using another quarter-waveplate with a linear polarizer to analyze the harmonic. These experiments proved the validity of Kleinmann symmetry in near-resonant and far off-resonant regimes.

Performing Bmmc Permutations Efficiently On Distributed-Memory Multiprocessors With Mpi, Thomas H. Cormen May 1997

Performing Bmmc Permutations Efficiently On Distributed-Memory Multiprocessors With Mpi, Thomas H. Cormen

Computer Science Technical Reports

This paper presents an architecture-independent method for performing BMMC permutations on multiprocessors with distributed memory. All interprocessor communication uses the MPI function MPI_Sendrecv_replace(). The number of elements and number of processors must be powers of 2, with at least one element per processor, and there is no inherent upper bound on the ratio of elements per processor. Our method transmits only data without transmitting any source or target indices, which conserves network bandwidth. When data is transmitted, the source and target processors implicitly agree on each other's identity and the indices of the elements being transmitted. A C-callable implementation of …

Native Vegetation On Farms Survey 1996 : A Survey Of Farmers Attitudes To Native Vegetation And Landcare In The Wheatbelt Of Western Australia, Suzanne Jenkins

Resource management technical reports

The Native Vegetation on Farms survey 1996 was performed to assess the attitudes of farmers to a number of issues related to existing native vegetation on farmland, the replanting of vegetation on farms and land degradation. Research has shown that it is important for a proportion of all farmland to have some native vegetation for ecological stability, to regulate hydrological processes and for long-term sustainability of farm production.

Single Row Routing: Theoretical And Experimental Performance Evaluation, And New Heuristic Development, David A. Hysom May 1997

Single Row Routing: Theoretical And Experimental Performance Evaluation, And New Heuristic Development, David A. Hysom

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

The Single Row Routing Problem (SRRP) is an abstraction arising from real-world multilayer routing concerns. While NP-Complete, development of efficient SRRP routing heuristics are of vital concern to VLSI design. Previously, researchers have introduced various heuristics for SRRP; however, a comprehensive examination of SRRP behavior has been lacking.

We are particularly concerned with the street-congestion minimization constraint, which is agreed to be the constraint of greatest interest to industry. Several theorems stating lower bounds on street congestion are known. We show that these bounds are not tight in general, and argue they may be in error by at least 50% …

Nickel Doping Of Boron–Carbon Alloy Films And Corresponding Fermi Level Shifts, Seong-Don Hwang, N. Remmes, Peter A. Dowben, D.N. Mcilroy May 1997

Nickel Doping Of Boron–Carbon Alloy Films And Corresponding Fermi Level Shifts, Seong-Don Hwang, N. Remmes, Peter A. Dowben, D.N. Mcilroy

Peter Dowben Publications

We have grown nickel doped boron–carbon alloy films by the technique of plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The source gas closo-1,2-dicarbadodecaborane (orthocarborane) was used to grow the boron–carbon alloy, while nickelocene [Ni(C5H5)2] was used as the dopant source for nickel. With sufficient levels of Ni doping, diodes with characteristic tunnel diode behavior can be fabricated. The doping of nickel transformed a B5C p-type material, relative to lightly doped n-type silicon, to a strongly n-type material. In order to gain insight into the shift of the Fermi level of the …

The Geomorphic Basis Of Colorado Squawfish Nursery Habitat In The Green River Near Ouray, Utah, Cynthia L. Rakowski May 1997

The Geomorphic Basis Of Colorado Squawfish Nursery Habitat In The Green River Near Ouray, Utah, Cynthia L. Rakowski

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Nursery habitat availability is considered a bottleneck to successful recruitment of Colorado squawfish (Ptychocheilus Lucius). Detailed geomorphic studies were conducted in a 1.5-km reach to examine channel response to flows and the geomorphic setting of nursery habitats during a 2-year period. Videography was used to extend relationships in the 1.5-km reach to a longer 10-km reach.

Nursery habitat availability varied yearly with little persistence in location or geomorphic setting of individual habitats for the 2 years of this study. A small number of habitats provided most of the area of high-quality (i.e., deep) habitat, and most of the …

Identification Of Belowground Woody Structures Using Molecular Biomarkers, Benny R. Bobowski May 1997

Identification Of Belowground Woody Structures Using Molecular Biomarkers, Benny R. Bobowski

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Within the last two decades substantial progress has been made in understanding seed bank dynamics and the contribution of the soil seed bank to a post-disturbance plant community. There has been relatively little progress, however, in understanding perennial bud bank dynamics and the contribution of the soil bud bank to secondary succession. This lack of information is due primarily to the inability to reliably identify roots, rhizomes, and lignotubers that lie dormant beneath the soil surface. This scientific investigation, therefore, addressed the issue of identification of belowground woody structures.

The first objective was to develop a methodology that utilizes molecular …

In Situ Observations Of Air Traffic Emission Signatures In The North Atlantic Flight Corridor, Hans Schlager, Paul Konopka, P. Schulte, U. Schumann, H. Ziereis, F. Arnold, M. Klemm, Donald E. Hagen, Philip D. Whitefield, J. Ovarlez

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Focussed aircraft measurements have been carried out over the eastern North Atlantic to search for signals of air traffic emissions in the flight corridor region. Observations include NO, NO2, HNO3, SO2, O3, H2O, total condensation nuclei (CN), and meteorological parameters. A flight pattern with constant-altitude north-south legs across the major North Atlantic air traffic tracks was flown. Signatures of air traffic emissions were clearly detected for NOx, SO2, and CN with peak concentrations of 2 ppbv, 0.25 ppbv, and 500 cm-3, respectively, exceeding background …

Chaotic Behavior And Damage Spreading In The Glauber Ising Model: A Master Equation Approach, Thomas Vojta May 1997

Chaotic Behavior And Damage Spreading In The Glauber Ising Model: A Master Equation Approach, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the sensitivity of the time evolution of a kinetic Ising model with Glauber dynamics against the initial conditions. To do so we apply the "damage spreading" method, i.e., we study the simultaneous evolution of two identical systems subjected to the same thermal noise. We derive a master equation for the joint probability distribution of the two systems. We then solve this master equation within an effective-field approximation which goes beyond the usual mean-field approximation by retaining the fluctuations though in a quite simplistic manner. The resulting effective-field theory is applied to different physical situations. It is used to …

Terminal Emulation System, Chun-Fu Lee May 1997

Terminal Emulation System, Chun-Fu Lee

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Terminal emulation is a personal computer application software which emulates the terminal's behavior to communicate with the mainframe/host computer. It can show the terminal screen on a personal computer screen and make the mainframe/host computer interact with it as it would with a real terminal without any distinction.

Personal computers are increasingly more powerful and efficient today. Their mobility, compatibility, flexibility, and extendibility are definitely superior to the 'dumb' traditional terminals. Terminal emulation is therefore devised to take advantage of these personal computers' redemptions to offset the traditional terminal's drawbacks and inconveniences.

A terminal emulation is actually a very complex …

Fabrication Of Micron Scale Magnetic Nickel Features By Selective Area Organometallic Chemical Vapor Deposition, D. Welipitiya, C.N. Borca, Peter A. Dowben May 1997

Fabrication Of Micron Scale Magnetic Nickel Features By Selective Area Organometallic Chemical Vapor Deposition, D. Welipitiya, C.N. Borca, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

We demonstrate that it is possible to deposit a wide range of magnetic features, using photo-assisted and electron radiation induced selective area organometallic chemical vapor deposition. Large arrays of identical micron to nano scale Ni features were deposited by these methods. Their magnetic properties were studied by alternating gradient force magnetometry as well as magnetic force microscopy. Our morphological and magnetic measurements show that the structures are spatially well defined, and the magnetic properties are related to the structural shapes of the features.

Average Steady Nonuniform Flow In Stratified Formations, Peter Indelman, Vitaly A. Zlotnik May 1997

Average Steady Nonuniform Flow In Stratified Formations, Peter Indelman, Vitaly A. Zlotnik

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

A mathematical model of average nonuniform flow in heterogeneous stratified media is developed. The averaged Darcy's law is obtained by deriving the analytical expression of the effective conductivity tensor for media with small heterogeneities. The fundamental solution of the average flow equation (mean Green function) corresponding to the flow toward a single point source of deterministic discharge is derived. The mean head distribution is calculated for a fully penetrating well, for a finite length well in an infinite domain, and for a dipole well. The concept of equivalent conductivity is defined for use in identifying the formation conductivity properties. The …

Whole Earth Telescope Observations Of The Helium Interacting Binary Pg 1346+082 (Cr Bootis), Judith L. Provençal, Matt A. Wood

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We present our analysis of 240 hr of white-light, high-speed photometry of the dwarf nova-like helium variable PG 1346+082 (CR Boo). We identify two frequencies in the low-state power spectrum, at 679.670 ± 0.004 μHz and 669.887 ± 0.008 μHz. The 679.670 μHz variation is coherent over at least a 2 week time span, the first demonstration of a phase-coherent photometric variation in any dwarf nova-like interacting binary white dwarf system. The high-state power spectrum contains a complex fundamental with a frequency similar, but not identical, to the low-state spectrum, and a series of harmonics not detected in low state. …
