Coyote Food Habits At Desoto National Wildlife Refuge, Nebraska, Jeffrey J. Huebschman, Scott E. Hygnstrom, Joseph A. Gubanyi
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Coyote (Canis latrans) food habits were detennined from 490 scats collected from October 1994 to October 1995 at DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge (DNWR), along the Nebraska/Iowa border. Mammals occurred most frequently, as measured by percent-of-scats (POS) , followed by vegetation, birds, and invertebrates. Mammals also constituted the largest portion of coyote diet, as determined by fresh weight correction factors. Within the mammalian category, white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) occurred most frequently and constituted the largest portion of diet by fresh weight correction factors. White-tailed deer occurrence and importance in diet peaked in June, which corresponds to the …

Anharmonic Potentials In Supercooled Liquids: The Soft-Potential Model, Ulrich Zürcher, T. Keyes
Anharmonic Potentials In Supercooled Liquids: The Soft-Potential Model, Ulrich Zürcher, T. Keyes
Physics Faculty Publications
Instantaneous normal modes (INM) are the harmonic approximation to liquid dynamics. This is an extension of the phonon description of lattice dynamics, in which case Bloch's theorem shows that all modes are extended. Long-range order is destroyed in liquids and glasses, and the INM spectrum has contributions from both extended and localized modes. We use the soft-potential mode to describe localized modes. This model is a high-temperature extension of the standard two-level-system model for glasses. The equilibrium position of any atom in the liquid has only temporary character, and relaxation processes in the liquid are associated with particles hopping over …

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
The authors show that in the 1940's technical consensus began to develop about the effects of land-based waste disposal on groundwater degradation. They go on to explain why this understanding was only slowly reflected in federal legislation.
The Complexity Of Clerkship Scheduling, Jonathan Feldman
The Complexity Of Clerkship Scheduling, Jonathan Feldman
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
Medical students must complete a clerkship program in their fourth year. Individual students have preferences for the clerkships to which they are assigned. However, individual hospitals also have capacities on how many students may be assigned to each clerkship. The problem of scheduling medical students to clerkships is formalized. The problem is then placed in a theoretical framework, and the most general case of Clerkship Scheduling is proven NP-hard. A detailed approximation algorithm is given, and an implementation of this algorithm is discussed and tested.

Use Of Fluorescence Microscopy In An Assay Of Sperm Density For The Gorgonian Coral, Plexaura Kuna, Timothy D. Swain, K. Kim, H. R. Lasker
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures
The density of sperm in the water column during the broadcast spawning events of marine invertebrates is often undetermined or reported in terms of fertilization potential. The density of sperm during such events can be determined by directly counting numbers of spermatozoa using a modification of the acridine orange direct count (AODC) technique for enumerating bacteria. A number of variables in the handling and processing of samples may bias estimates. Sample collection in glass and rapid fixation and filtration are necessary for reproducible estimates. Once filtered, samples are stable for many months, and counts on filters that were poorly stained …
Agrometeorological Aspects Of Crop Production In Temperate Kashmir, Badrul Hasan
Agrometeorological Aspects Of Crop Production In Temperate Kashmir, Badrul Hasan
Drought Network News (1994–2001)
In our recent article on forecasting uncertain weather over temperate Kashmir (India) (Drought Network News, Vol. 9, No. 1, pp. 12–14), we tried to characterize the crop-growing environments by giving long-term means of various agrometeorological parameters (such as air temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, and hours of bright sunshine). Forecast analysis for changes in temperature and precipitation events indicated an overall reliability of about 50%. Changes in minimum temperature could be forecasted relatively more accurately than changes in maximum temperature. Precipitation events were more uncertain during summer (May to October), which happens to be an important season from the …

A Case Study Of The Deficit Spell Index For India’S Semiarid Delhi Region, K. K. Nathan
A Case Study Of The Deficit Spell Index For India’S Semiarid Delhi Region, K. K. Nathan
Drought Network News (1994–2001)
The Delhi region, the national capital region of India, is locked in by adjoining states like Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Delhi has a characteristic continental type of climate, with extreme dryness, intensely hot summers, and dry cold winters. According to climatologists, this region is classified as semiarid tropical steppe. The monsoon rainfall is very erratic during June–September, which is the kharif crop-growing season. The monsoon breaks over the Delhi region between the first and second week of July and withdraws by the last week of September. The average annual rainfall is about 712.5 mm, of which 80% is contributed by …

Ndmc Conducting Regional Drought Planning Workshops
Drought Network News (1994–2001)
The National Drought Mitigation Center is conducting a series of regional workshops, “Planning for the Next Drought,” around the country in 1997 and 1998. The first workshop was in Albuquerque, New Mexico, July 28–30. Plans are underway to conduct similar workshops in other regions. A second workshop will probably be held in Salt Lake City in late 1997, followed by workshops in the Southeast and Midwest in 1998. Because the workshops are sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, there is no registration fee.

Localized Severe Drought During 1996 And Its Impact On Crop Production In Raipur District Of Central India, J. S. Urkurkar, V. K. Koshta, Diwakar Naidu, A. S. R. A. S. Sastri
Drought Network News (1994–2001)
In Raipur district, the onset of the monsoon occurred in the 25th standard meteorological week (June 18–24). But after the onset of monsoonal rains, there was a lull in the monsoon for about 2 consecutive weeks. In the 28th week (July 9–15), the district received 77.6 mm of rainfall. This was equal to the normal value for that week. In the following (29th) week, the district received 96.8 mm rainfall, 38.9% more than the normal rainfall for that week.
Thus, the rice, soybean, and other crops sown with the onset of the monsoon in the 25th week suffered from acute …

Drought Network News (1994–2001)
Drought policy continues to be a topic of much discussion in the United States. On June 12, the Western Drought Coordination Council (WDCC) met for the first time and adopted a work plan for 1997–98. The WDCC is committed to improving drought management in the western states through mitigation and preparedness. It is hoped that this Council, representing a partnership between federal, state, local, and tribal government, will serve as a model for other drought-prone regions of the United States. Four working groups (preparedness and mitigation; monitoring, assessment, and prediction; response; and communications) established by the Council will meet in …

Observation Of Large Diurnal Warming Events In The Near-Surface Layer Of The Western Equatorial Pacific Warm Pool, Alexander Soloviev, Roger Lukas
Observation Of Large Diurnal Warming Events In The Near-Surface Layer Of The Western Equatorial Pacific Warm Pool, Alexander Soloviev, Roger Lukas
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Because of the relatively calm winds which prevail over the western Pacific warm pool, the diurnal cycle of temperature in the near-surface layer of the ocean is often quite pronounced. During the TOGA Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Response Experiment (COARE), very high resolution measurements of near-surface thermohaline and turbulence structures were made using bowmounted probes and a free-rising profiler. Experimental data demonstrate a strong dependence of near-surface thermal structure on weather conditions, In calm weather, SST was observed to exceed 33.25°C; this was associated with a diurnal warming of more than 3°C in the top I m of the ocean. A 1-D …
Sharp Frontal Interfaces In The Near-Surface Layer Of The Ocean In The Western Equatorial Pacific Warm Pool, Alexander Soloviev, Roger Lukas
Sharp Frontal Interfaces In The Near-Surface Layer Of The Ocean In The Western Equatorial Pacific Warm Pool, Alexander Soloviev, Roger Lukas
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
During the TOGA COARE rich horizontal temperature and salinity variability of the near-surface layer of the ocean in the western Pacific warm pool was observed. High-resolution measurements were made by probes mounted on the bow of the vessel in an undisturbed region at ~1.7-m depth during four COARE cruises of the R/V Moana Wave. The authors observed several tens of cases of periodic sharp frontal interfaces of width 1– 100 m and separation 0.2–60 km. The sharp frontal interfaces were often found in frontal regions and on the periphery of freshwater puddles. Maneuvers of the ship were conducted to determine …

High-Order Interior Caustics Produced In Scattering Of A Diagonally Incident Plane Wave By A Circular Cylinder, Charles L. Adler, James A. Lock, Bradley R. Stone, Claudio J. Garcia
Physics Faculty Publications
We examine scattering of a family of initially parallel diagonally incident rays by a dielectric circular cylinder and show that the interior and exterior caustics that occur are qualitatively identical to those produced at normal incidence. We find, however, that (1) varying the plane-wave tilt angle has the same effect on the caustics as varying the refractive index of the cylinder at normal incidence and (2) high-order interior caustics are visible because of larger internal-reflection Fresnel coefficients at diagonal incidence than at normal incidence. We also observe noncaustic ray trajectories produced by the sharp peaking of internal-reflection Fresnel coefficients at …

Debye-Series Analysis Of The First-Order Rainbow Produced In Scattering Of A Diagonally Incident Plane Wave By A Circular Cylinder, James A. Lock, Charles L. Adler
Physics Faculty Publications
We derive the Debye-series expansion of the partial-wave scattering and interior amplitudes for the interaction of a diagonally incident beam of arbitrary profile with an infinitely long homogeneous dielectric circular cylinder. We then discuss the physical interpretation of the various terms of the series. We also consider the one-internal-reflection Debye-series terms for diagonal plane-wave incidence and examine the first-order rainbow extinction transition as a function of the tilt angle of the incident plane wave. We experimentally observe the first-order rainbow extinction transition and compare our observations with the Debye-series predictions. (C) 1997 Optical Society of America.

Recently, measurements were made of mesospheric gravity waves in the OI (5577 Å) nightglow observed from Arecibo, Puerto Rico, during January 1993 as part of a special 10-day campaign. Clear, monochromatic gravity waves were observed on several nights. By using a full-wave model that realistically includes the major physical processes in this region, we have simulated the propagation of two waves through the mesopause region and calculated the O(1 S) nightglow response to the waves. Mean winds derived from both UARS wind imaging interferometer (WINDII) and Arecibo incoherent scatter radar observations were employed in the computations as were the climatological …
The Equation Of State For Two Flavor Qcd At N_T=6, James E. Hetrick, C. Bernard
The Equation Of State For Two Flavor Qcd At N_T=6, James E. Hetrick, C. Bernard
All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science
We improve the calculation of the equation of state for two flavor QCD by simulating on Nt = 6 lattices at appropriate values of the couplings for the deconfinement/chiral symmetry restoration crossover. For amq = 0.0125 the energy density rises rapidly to approximately 1 GeV/fm3 just after the crossover (mπ/mρ ≈ 0.4 at this point). Comparing with our previous result for Nt = 4 [1], we find large finite Nt corrections as expected from free field theory on finite lattices. We also provide formulae for extracting the speed of sound from the measured quantities.

Degenerate Layer At Gan/Sapphire Interface: Influence On Hall-Effect Measurements, David C. Look, Richard J. Molnar
Degenerate Layer At Gan/Sapphire Interface: Influence On Hall-Effect Measurements, David C. Look, Richard J. Molnar
Physics Faculty Publications
Temperature-dependent Hall-effect measurements in hydride vapor phase epitaxial GaN grown on sapphire can be well fitted over the temperature range 10–400 K by assuming a thin, degenerate n-type region at the GaN/sapphire interface. This degenerate interfacial region dominates the electrical properties below 30 K, but also significantly affects those properties even at 400 K, and can cause a second, deeper donor to falsely appear in the analysis. However, by using a two-layer Hall model, the bulk mobility and carrier concentration can be accurately ascertained.
