Conservation Of A Dinosaur In Modern Times: South Carolina’S Alligator Management Program, Walter E. Rhodes Oct 1997

Conservation Of A Dinosaur In Modern Times: South Carolina’S Alligator Management Program, Walter E. Rhodes

Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference: 8th (1997)

American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) conservation is necessary given the animal's role in wetland ecosystems and its economic value. Although the alligator appears to be no longer threatened with extinction, the reptile’s perceived reputation and a burgeoning human population combine to create a management paradox. Alligator management in South Carolina consists of a Nuisance Control Program, a Private Lands Harvest Program, and public education. Annually, over 750 alligator complaints are received by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), and harvest averages about 250 animals. To address alligator/human interaction in rural habitats, a harvest on private lands was …

Do You Have Your Skates On?, Gary J. San Julian

Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference: 8th (1997)

It is an honor to keynote this conference as we think about our profession in the next century. Jim asked me to predict what the future of wildlife damage management might look like in the year 2020. I explained to him that I have not been actively engaged in doing wildlife damage work for almost 9 years and I had been in an administrative role. Jim knew that I am going back to a faculty position in the next several months. He thought it was great for a person coming out of retirement to predict the future. Since I left …

Private Nuisance Wildlife Control: Is There A Future In Kansas?, Charles D. Lee, Philip Gipson, Lucas Koch

Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference: 8th (1997)

The private industry involvement in nuisance animal damage control is increasing in Kansas. Improved oversight of that industry is needed and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) plans to implement a mandatory education and certification program beginning in 1998. KDWP currently issues permits to individuals who wish to trap or control nuisance animals outside of normal harvest seasons. Individuals who have held these permits to conduct nuisance animal damage control were surveyed in 1995 to better understand the status and needs of that industry in Kansas. A 3-page mail survey was sent to all 93 permit holders. Raccoons …

Response From Cooperative Extension Personnel To Citizen Requests For Information About Wildlife (Poster Abstract), Shannon Thurston, Gary J. San Julian Oct 1997

Response From Cooperative Extension Personnel To Citizen Requests For Information About Wildlife (Poster Abstract), Shannon Thurston, Gary J. San Julian

Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference: 8th (1997)

With the increasing urbanization of rural areas, conflicts between homeowners and wildlife are becoming more common. County extension offices frequently receive telephone calls from individuals who are experiencing problems with wildlife. In most cases, extension staff provides assistance over the phone or by mail. However, there are no guidelines for the distribution of information nor is there training for extension personnel. Each county office collects and distributes information differently. Because there is no follow-up to inquiries, little is known about what the homeowners actually do or whether the problems were solved. With some wildlife species, there is a question of …

An Ice Shelf Mechanism For Heinrich Layer Production, Christina L. Hulbe Oct 1997

An Ice Shelf Mechanism For Heinrich Layer Production, Christina L. Hulbe

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The effect of an ice shelf in the Labrador Sea on ice-rafted sediment delivery to the glacial North Atlantic is investigated using a finite element numerical model of ice shelf flow. Discharge into the shelf from Hudson Strait creates a thick central core, extending downstream into the shelf, that is flanked by relatively thin ice. Melting at the base of the deep keel would produce cool, fresh water which would rise to refreeze along the keel's flanks. Debris deposited by melting deep central ice could create the Heinrich layers observed in the Labrador Sea while the debris-rich ice protected by …

Computing Dense Clusters On-Line For Information Organization, Javed Aslam, Katya Pelekhov, Daniela Rus Oct 1997

Computing Dense Clusters On-Line For Information Organization, Javed Aslam, Katya Pelekhov, Daniela Rus

Computer Science Technical Reports

We present and analyze the off-line star algorithm for clustering static information systems and the on-line star algorithm for clustering dynamic information systems. These algorithms partition a document collection into a number of clusters that is naturally induced by the collection. We show a lower bound on the accuracy of the clusters produced by these algorithms. We use the random graph model to show that both star algorithms produce correct clusters in time Theta(V + E). Finally, we provide data from extensive experiments.

Approximating Disjoint-Path Problems Using Greedy Algorithms And Packing Integer Programs, Stavros G. Kolliopoulos, Clifford Stein Oct 1997

Approximating Disjoint-Path Problems Using Greedy Algorithms And Packing Integer Programs, Stavros G. Kolliopoulos, Clifford Stein

Computer Science Technical Reports

In the edge(vertex)-disjoint path problem we are given a graph $G$ and a set ${\cal T}$ of connection requests. Every connection request in ${\cal T}$ is a vertex pair $(s_i,t_i),$ $1 \leq i \leq K.$ The objective is to connect a maximum number of the pairs via edge(vertex)-disjoint paths. The edge-disjoint path problem can be generalized to the multiple-source unsplittable flow problem where connection request $i$ has a demand $\rho_i$ and every edge $e$ a capacity $u_e.$ All these problems are NP-hard and have a multitude of applications in areas such as routing, scheduling and bin packing. Given the hardness …

Inclusive Decays B->Dx And B->D*X, L. Gibbons, Manoj Thulasidas Oct 1997

Inclusive Decays B->Dx And B->D*X, L. Gibbons, Manoj Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We report new measurements of the differential and total branching ratios for inclusive B decay to D-0, D+, and D*+ and the first measurement of the same quantities for inclusive B decay to D-*0. Here B is the mixture of B-d and B-u from Y(4S) decay. Furthermore, since more than one charm particle (or antiparticle) of the same kind can be produced in B decay, here ''inclusive B branching ratio'' is used to mean the average number of charm particles and their antiparticles of a certain species: produced in B decay. We obtain the following results (the first error is …

A Unifying Construction For Difference Sets, James A. Davis, Jonathan Jedwab Oct 1997

A Unifying Construction For Difference Sets, James A. Davis, Jonathan Jedwab

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We present a recursive construction for difference sets which unifies the Hadamard, McFarland, and Spence parameter families and deals with all abelian groups known to contain such difference sets. The construction yields a new family of difference sets with parameters (v, k, λ,n)=(22d+4(22d+2−1)/3, 22d+1(22d+3+1)/3, 22d+1(22d+1+1)/3, 24d+2) for d⩾0. The construction establishes that a McFarland difference set exists in an abelian group of order 22 …

An Evaluation Of Plant Community Structure, Fish And Benthic Meio- And Macrofauna As Success Criteria For Reclaimed Wetlands, Thomas Crisman, William J. Streever, John H. Kiefer, David L. Evans

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

As a result of legislative action in 1975 (Florida Administrative Code Section 16C-16, 16C-17), landscape reclamation is required on all lands mined for phosphate in the State of Florida. Between 1975 and 1991, for example, approximately 40,000 ha of land in Florida were strip mined for phosphate and thus subject to provisions of this legislation. In excess of 2,700 ha of mitigation wetlands have been constructed as part of the land reclamation effort, but the degree to which these systems mimic both the structural and functional properties of natural wetlands is poorly known.

There has been a great diversity in …

The Use Of Spectrofluorimetry And Capillary Electrophoresis/Laser-Induced Fluorescence For The Detection Of Fluorescent Dyes In Groundwater Migration Studies, Patrick Ferguson

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This thesis involves work that was accomplished during a two-year internship at the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA), Environmental Chemistry Branch. The research is an application of trace level determination of fluorescein dyes used as groundwater tracers. The work was performed to determine whether groundwater could migrate from a Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) site to an adjacent Superfund site. The research involved using Spectrofluorimetry and a new technique called capillary electrophoresis/laser induced fluorescence (CE/LIF) to determine tracer dyes that were injected at the RCRA site and monitored at the Superfund site. Results from Spectrofluorimetry were compared to those of CE/LIF. …

Aspects Of Postcollision Interactions (Pci) Near The Ar L-Shell, James A.R. Samson, Y. Lu, Wayne C. Stolte

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

In the present work we are interested in near-threshold photoionization experiments involving postcollision effects related to the Auger decay of a vacancy in the Ar L shell. In particular, we have measured the photoelectron energy spectrum resulting from the above postcollision interaction effects and have observed electrons produced by the process of electron capture and reemission.

Velocity Estimation Via A Neural Network Enhanced By Classical Detection Algorithms, Zeki Berk Hamşioğlu Oct 1997

Velocity Estimation Via A Neural Network Enhanced By Classical Detection Algorithms, Zeki Berk Hamşioğlu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The goal of this research is to show how to solve a velocity estimation problem using a neural network connected to an array of sensors. Motivated by biological studies involving insect vision, the neural network utilized is a member of a class of shunting neural networks. When an object moves across the face of the sensor array, the neural network's pulse response is first temporally located using classical M-ary detection techniques. Both the deterministic and stochastic cases are considered. Then the network's pulse response is post-processed via an existing velocity estimation algorithm based on a Volterra series model of the …

The chemical engineering curriculum in the United States has trained generations of technical experts who have successfully optimized chemical processes and products once they entered the chemical industry. The U.S. chemical industry, however, has entered a critical stage in which it must be able to create new and differentiated value through technical innovations that arc essential for long-term survival. This innovation process will require new skills that go far beyond the traditional expertise for the optimization of tasks possessed by young chemical engineers. The innovators must be able to identify new opportunities, explore the boundaries of technology, evaluate critical issues, …

Modeling And Comparison Of Wormhole Routed Mesh And Torus Networks, Ronald I. Greenberg, Lee Guan Oct 1997

Modeling And Comparison Of Wormhole Routed Mesh And Torus Networks, Ronald I. Greenberg, Lee Guan

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

2D-mesh and torus networks have often been proposed as the interconnection pattern for parallel computers. In addition, wormhole routing has increasingly been advocated as a method of reducing latency. Most analysis of wormhole routed networks, however, has focused on the torus and the broader class of k-ary n-cubes to which it belongs. This paper presents a performance model for the wormhole routed mesh, and it compares the performance of the mesh and torus based on theoretical and empirical analyses.
