Empirical Models Of Storm-Time Equatorial Zonal Electric Fields, Bela G. Fejer, L. Scherliess
Empirical Models Of Storm-Time Equatorial Zonal Electric Fields, Bela G. Fejer, L. Scherliess
Bela G. Fejer
Ionospheric plasma drifts often show highly complex and variable signatures during geomagnetically active periods due to the effects of different disturbance processes. We describe initially a methodology for the study of storm time dependent ionospheric electric fields. We present empirical models of equatorial disturbance zonal electric fields obtained using extensive F region vertical plasma drift measurements from the Jicamarca Observatory and auroral electrojet indices. These models determine the plasma drift perturbations due to the combined effects of short-lived prompt penetration and longer lasting disturbance dynamo electric fields. We show that the prompt penetration drifts obtained from a high time resolution …
Design And Analysis Of Multispecies Toxicity Tests For Pesticide Registration, Wayne G. Landis, Robin A. Matthews, Geoffrey B. Matthews
Design And Analysis Of Multispecies Toxicity Tests For Pesticide Registration, Wayne G. Landis, Robin A. Matthews, Geoffrey B. Matthews
Environmental Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
The community conditioning hypothesis describes ecological structures as historical, nonequilibrial, and by definition complex. Indeed, the historical nature of ecological structures is seen as the primary difference between single-species toxicity tests and multispecies test systems. Given the complex properties of ecological structures, multispecies toxicity tests need to be designed accordingly with appropriate data analysis tools. Care must be taken to ensure that each replicate shares an identical history, or divergence will rapidly occur. Attempting to realize homogeneity by linear cross inoculation or waiting for an equilibrium state to occur assumes properties that ecological structures do not have. Data analysis must …

Vertical Profiles Of Bromoform In Snow, Sea Ice, And Seawater In The Canadian Arctic, William T. Sturges, Glenn F. Cota, Paul T. Buckley
Vertical Profiles Of Bromoform In Snow, Sea Ice, And Seawater In The Canadian Arctic, William T. Sturges, Glenn F. Cota, Paul T. Buckley
CCPO Publications
Bromoform (CHBr3) was measured in vertical profiles from the snow surface through the snowpack, sea ice, and water column to the seafloor at Resolute Bay, Canada, in the sprig of 1992. Elevated concentrations of bromoform were observed in both the ice (32-266 ng L-1 by liquid water volume) and seawater (~ 20 ng L-1 ) at the ice-water interface, associated with bromoform emission from ice microalgae. A surprising finding was a second horizon of high bromoform concentrations (336-367 ng L-1) in sea ice at the snow-ice interface. Chlorophyll and salinity were also elevated in …

Vic*: A Compiler For Virtual-Memory C*, Alex Colvin, Thomas H. Cormen
Computer Science Technical Reports
This paper describes the functionality of ViC*, a compiler for a variant of the data-parallel language C* with support for out-of-core data. The compiler translates C* programs with shapes declared outofcore, which describe parallel data stored on disk. The compiler output is a SPMD-style program in standard C with I/O and library calls added to efficiently access out-of-core parallel data. The ViC* compiler also applies several program transformations to improve out-of-core data layout and access.
Task Scheduling In Networks, Cynthia Phillips, Clifford Stein, Joel Wein
Task Scheduling In Networks, Cynthia Phillips, Clifford Stein, Joel Wein
Dartmouth Scholarship
Scheduling a set of tasks on a set of machines so as to yield an efficient schedule is a basic problem in computer science and operations research. Most of the research on this problem incorporates the potentially unrealistic assumption that communication between the different machines is instantaneous. In this paper we remove this assumption and study the problem of network scheduling, where each job originates at some node of a network, and in order to be processed at another node must take the time to travel through the network to that node.
Our main contribution is to give approximation algorithms …
Spectrum Of Hot O At The Exobases Of The Terrestrial Planets, Jane L. Fox, Aleksander B. Hać
Spectrum Of Hot O At The Exobases Of The Terrestrial Planets, Jane L. Fox, Aleksander B. Hać
Physics Faculty Publications
The distribution of energetic O produced in dissociative recombination of O2+ at the exobases of the terrestrial planets is important in determining the structure of the outer hot O coronas and for the escape flux of O from Mars. Using recently measured values for the branching ratios of the energetically allowed channels in O2+ dissociative recombination, along with models of the vibrational distribution of O2+, we compute the velocity distribution of hot O atoms produced at the exobases of Mars, Venus, and Earth. We take into account the effects of the ion and …

Coordinate Regulation Of G- And C Strand Length During New Telomere Synthesis, Xinqing Fan, Carolyn Mary Price
Coordinate Regulation Of G- And C Strand Length During New Telomere Synthesis, Xinqing Fan, Carolyn Mary Price
Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications
We have used the ciliate Euplotes to study the role of DNA polymerase in telomeric C strand synthesis. Euplotes provides a unique opportunity to study C strand synthesis without the complication of simultaneous DNA replication because millions of new telomeres are made at a stage in the life cycle when no general DNA replication takes place. Previously we showed that the C-strands of newly synthesized telomeres have a precisely controlled length while the G-strands are more heterogeneous. This finding suggested that, although synthesis of the G-strand (by telomerase) is the first step in telomere addition, a major regulatory step occurs …
Simulation Study Of Learning Automata Games In Automated Highway Systems, Cem Unsal, Pushkin Kachroo, John S. Bay
Simulation Study Of Learning Automata Games In Automated Highway Systems, Cem Unsal, Pushkin Kachroo, John S. Bay
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
One of the most important issues in Automated Highway System (AHS) deployment is intelligent vehicle control. While the technology to safely maneuver vehicles exists, the problem of making intelligent decisions to improve a single vehicle’s travel time and safety while optimizing the overall traffic flow is still a stumbling block. We propose an artificial intelligence technique called stochastic learning automata to design an intelligent vehicle path controller. Using the information obtained by on-board sensors and local communication modules, two automata are capable of learning the best possible (lateral and longitudinal) actions to avoid collisions. This learning method is capable of …

Search For The Decay Τ-→4Π-3Π+(Π0)ΝΤ, K. W. Edwards, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
We have searched for the decay of the τ lepton into seven charged particles and zero or one π0. The data used in the search were collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.61 fb-. No evidence for a signal is found. Assuming all the charged particles are pions, we set an upper limit on the branching fraction B(τ-→4π-3π+(π0) ντ) < 2.4X10-6 at the 90% confidence level. This limit represents a significant improvement …
New Upper Limit On The Decay Η→E+E-, T. E. Browder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration
New Upper Limit On The Decay Η→E+E-, T. E. Browder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
We have searched for the rare decay of the η meson η→e+e- using the CLEO II detector. The η’s were produced in e+e- collisions with 10 GeV center-of-mass energy at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). We find with 90% confidence the upper limit on the branching fraction B (η→e+e-)<7.7×10-5. The application of conventional elementary particle theory to this decay predicts a branching fraction of about 10-9.

Determination Of The Michel Parameters And The Τ Neutrino Helicity In Τ Decay, J. P. Alexander, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
Using the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring operated at √s =10.6 GeV, we have determined the Michel parameters ρ, ξ, and δ in τ±→l±νν̅ decay as well as the τ neutrino helicity parameter hvτ in τ±→π±π0ν decay. From a data sample of 3.02×106 produced τ pairs we analyzed events of the topologies e+e-→τ+τ-→(l±νν̅)(π±π0ν) and e+e-→τ+τ-→(π±π0ν̅)(π±π0ν). …

From 1996 June 10 to July 29, the International Ultraviolet Explorer monitored the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469 continuously in an attempt to measure time delays between the continuum and emission-line fluxes. From the time delays, one can estimate the size of the region dominating the production of the UV emission lines in this source. We find the strong UV emission lines to respond to continuum variations with time delays of about 2.d3-3.d1 for Lyα, 2.d7 for C IV λ1549, 1.d9-2.d4 for N IV λ …
