Visual Interaction: A Link Between Perception And Problem Solving, Erika Rogers, Ronald C. Arkin

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The approach taken in this research is to develop a cognitive model of how a human observer extracts information from a visual display and then uses this perceptual information in a decision-making task. Knowledge about this relationship provides information about the occurrence of perceptual events in the course of problem-solving activities, and suggests that perceptual assistance in the form of image enhancements is a useful supplement to the user’s own abilities. This knowledge is then to be embedded in an intelligent computerized assistant which is designed to facilitate and stimulate the human problem-solving process.

Multifragment emission in the reaction at has been measured with a low-threshold 4π detector array. Over this broad range of incident energies, the mean values and variances of the intermediate mass fragment (IMF: 3 ⩽ Z ⩽ 20) multiplicity distributions exhibit an approximate scaling with the total charged particle multiplicity. The measured multiplicities of light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments are compared with both a model involving statistical decay of an expanding compound nucleus, and with a model involving microscopic quasi-particle dynamics. The statistical decay model predictions are sensitive to the low-density nuclear equation of state.

Several species of aquatic bacteria are known to exploit the earth's geomagnetic field as a means of directing their motion towards suitable habitats. A feature common to these bacteria is the presence of discrete intracellular magnetic inclusions, magnetosomes, aligned in chains along the long axis of the organism. The size and orientation of the individual magnetic particles imparts a permanent magnetic dipole moment to the cell which is, in turn, responsible for the magnetotactic response. In all species examined to date the magnetic particles have been found to be well-ordered, single domain, membrane-bounded crystals with reproducible, species-specific morphologies. Vorticity Dynamics Of Seasonal Variations Of The Antarctic Circumpolar Current From A Modeling Study, John M. Klinck

A one-layer numerical model was developed to analyze the vorticity dynamics of the seasonal variations of currents in the Southern Ocean. The model includes the continental geometry and bathymetry of the Southern Ocean and is forced by monthly climatological wind stress. Five cases are considered that compare (i) circulation over a flat bottom to that with bathymetry, (ii) effects of zonally averaged wind stress forcing versus the climatological forcing and (iii) anomaly wind stress (winds with the annual mean removed) versus the full stress. We have used the solid state proton spin relaxation technique to investigate the barriers for methyl and t-butyl group reorientation in polycrystalline 1-bromo-2,4,6-tri-t-butylbenzene. The barriers in the range of 15-19 kJ/mol (3-5 kcal/mol) are compared with those found in related molecules. It is shown that the neighboring ring bromine atom has an effect on the barrier for t-butyl group reorientation similar to that of a neighboring hydrogen atom despite the significantly larger van der Waals' radius of a bromine atom. Chromospherically Active Stars Ix Hd 33798 = V390 Aurigae: A Lithium-Rich Rapidly Rotating Single Giant, Francis C. Fekel, Laurence A. Marschall

HD 33798 is a chromospherically active, rapidly rotating, lithium-rich, late-type giant. Analysis of 40 radial velocities indicates no periodic velocity variations, suggesting that the star is single, so its rapid rotation (v sin i = 29 km s-1) is highly unusual. Such rotation is inconsistent with the rotational brake hypothesis of Gray [ApJ, 262, 682 (1982); 347, 1021 (1989)] and the results of Rutten & Pylyser [A&A, 191, 227 (1988)]. Although there are many similarities to the supposed pre-main-sequence star HDE 283572, the lithium abundance and space motion of HD 33798 appears to be in a post-main-sequence phase of …

The conformational potential energy surface of nonionized glycine has been studied by using ab initio (6-310*, ST0-20) and semiempirical (AM1, PM3) methods. The MP2/6-31G*/ /RHF/6-310* potential energy surface was then used to calculate the Boltzmann equilibrium distribution and kinetics of conformational interconversion at various temperatures. The results of this study are compared to previous computational and experimental investigations of gas-phase glycine.

The RHF, ROHF, and GVB structures and energetics of group IV 2,4,5-trioxa[l.l.l]metallapropellanes, 2,4,5- trithia [ l.l.l]metallapropellanes, and their bicyclopentane analogues have been determined from ab initio molecular orbital theory by using both the 6-31G(d) basis set for all-electron calculations and the valence basis set with effective core potentials (ECP) developed by Stevens, Basch, and Krauss. Although they have extremely short bridgehead distances, these species possess fairly large natural orbital occupation numbers in the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals, indicating significant diradical character. Structures and other properties determined by ECP calculations are in good agreement with the 6-31 G(d) all-electron calculations.

Electron scattering from C was measured at a momentum transfer of 5.08 fm . No electron events were observed in the vicinity of the elastic peak, giving an upper limit for the elastic cross section of 1.2 x 10 cm /sr with a confidence level of 90%. At this momentum transfer, the square of the elastic M1 form factor apparently continues to fall exponentially with q. Comparison of the data with shell-model calculations indicates that admixtures of 2hu configurations in the C ground state cannot entirely explain the high-q enhancement of the Ml form factor relative to 1p-shell calculations.

Bowling Green became the center of a five-county oil boom in the late-1910s. Two men working on construction of Western Kentucky University’s Potter Hall were determined to not be left out of the action. Architect William J. Bray and contractor Walter Brashear formed a syndicate to lease local land for oil exploration. In August 1920, WKU’s Board of Regents granted their company, The Great Arch Oil Company, exclusive rights to drill on the school’s farm. The majority of the company’s investors were school faculty and staff. Of the three wells drilled, only one showed promise and it was soon abandoned …

A companion paper has introduced the Hierarchical PRAM (H-PRAM) model of parallel computation, which achieves a good balance between simplicity of usage and reflectivity of realistic parallel computers. In this paper, we demonstrate the usage of the model by designing and analyzing various algorithms for computing the complete binary tree, and the FFT/butterfly graph. By concentrating on two problems, we are able to demonstrate the results of different combinations of organizational strategies and different types of sub-models of the H-PRAM. Resolution as an inference procedure forms the basis of most automated theorem-proving and reasoning systems. The most costly constituent of the resolution procedure in its conventional form is unification. This paper describes PCS, a first-order language in which resolution-based inference can be conducted without unification. PCS resembles the language of elementary logic with the difference that singular predicates supplant individual constants and functions. The result is a uniformity in the treatment of individual constants, functions and predicates. An especially costly part of unification is the occur check. Sommers posed the question 'Do We Need Identity?' and answered in the negative. According to Sommers, the need for a special identity relation resulted from an arbitrary distinction between concept and object introduced by Frege and retained in modern predicate logic (MPL). This is reflected in the syntactic distinction between predicate and individual constant. Traditional formal logic (TFL) does not respect this distinction and, as a consequence, has no need for a special identity relation. But Sommers' position has not gained general acceptance. This paper outlines two methods which we believe will play an important role in any distributed memory compiler able to handle sparse and unstructured problems. We describe how to link runtime partitioners to distributed memory compilers. In our scheme, programmers can implicitly specify how data and loop iterations are to be distributed between processors. This insulates users from having to deal explicitly with potentially complex algorithms that carry out work and data partitioning. We also describe a viable mechanism for tracking and reusing copies of off-processor data. In many programs, several loops access the same off-processor memory locations. As long …
