Reconstruction And Future Trends Of The Aids Epidemic In The United States, Ron Brookmeyer Nov 1991

Reconstruction And Future Trends Of The Aids Epidemic In The United States, Ron Brookmeyer

Ron Brookmeyer

There has been considerable uncertainty in estimates of past and current human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection rates in the United States. Statistical estimates of historical infection rates can be obtained from acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) incidence data and the incubation period. However, this approach is subject to a number of sources of uncertainty and two other approaches, epidemic models of HIV transmission and surveys of HIV prevalence, are used to corroborate and refine the statistical estimates. Analyses suggest the HIV infection rate in the United States grew rapidly in the early 1980s, peaked in the mid-1980s, and subsequently declined markedly. …

Determination Of The Vertical Ionization Potentials Of Small Sodium Clusters Using Path Integral Monte Carlo Calculations, Sean E. Hays, Randall W. Hall Sep 1991

Determination Of The Vertical Ionization Potentials Of Small Sodium Clusters Using Path Integral Monte Carlo Calculations, Sean E. Hays, Randall W. Hall

Randall W. Hall

Feynman's path integral formulation of quantum mechanics, supplemented by an approximate pseudopotential to account for exchange, is used to determine the vertical ionization potentials of Na1-Na4. Results are in good agreement with both the trends and the quantitative results of earlier work, We observe that the amount of discretion necessary to obtain converged energies is greater than that needed to obtain qualitatively correct information regarding the nature of the correlated wave function.

Observability Of The Anapole Moment And Neutrino Charge Radius, Mj Musolf, Br Holstein Apr 1991

Observability Of The Anapole Moment And Neutrino Charge Radius, Mj Musolf, Br Holstein

Barry R Holstein

The properties of the neutrino charge radius (NCR) and anapole moments (AM's) of elementary fermions, nucleons, and nuclei are discussed. The dependence of these off-shell electromagnetic couplings on the weak gauge parameter is explicitly demonstrated by a calculation performed in the Rξ gauge. The gauge dependence of the AM's and NCR implies that they cannot be observed in isolation from other second-order, electroweak effects. It is shown, however, that the AM's of various hadronic systems having an SU(2)L quantum number TL3=0 can be considered ``observables'' in certain formal, though unphysical, limits. It is argued that, apart from these special limits, …

Foundations Of Fuzzy Sets, Lawrence Stout, Ulrich Höhle Dec 1990

Foundations Of Fuzzy Sets, Lawrence Stout, Ulrich Höhle

Lawrence N. Stout

This paper gives an overview of the origins of fuzzy set theory and the problems for the foundations of fuzzy sets arising from those origins and current practice. It then gives detailed accounts of categorical approaches using a closed structure to capture the fuzzy AND connective. Within these categories weak forms of subobject representations provide an internal second order logic. An approach to fuzzy real numbers and fuzzy topology is included to illustrate the use of this internal; second order theory.

A Survey Of Fuzzy Set And Topos Theory, Lawrence Stout Dec 1990

A Survey Of Fuzzy Set And Topos Theory, Lawrence Stout

Lawrence N. Stout

This paper is a comparison and contrast of approaches to many-valued mathematics offered by Fuzzy Set theory and topos theory. It gives a survey of the categorical foundations of Fuzzy Set theory and related topoi. Topoi are not a basis for Fuzzy Set theory but they do suggest appropriate directions to go and questions to ask for a synthesis which does provide a foundation. One possible structure which has a topos-like internal logic and the, rich variety of logical connectives used in fuzzy sets is included.
