Mechanisms Responsible For Sinkhole Flooding On An Urbanized Karst Terrain: South Sunrise / Media Drive, Bowling Green, Kentucky, Thomas Feeney
Mechanisms Responsible For Sinkhole Flooding On An Urbanized Karst Terrain: South Sunrise / Media Drive, Bowling Green, Kentucky, Thomas Feeney
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Sinkhole flooding on the urban karst area of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was studied by investigating past flood events in the South Sunrise/Media Drive Sinkhole. The actual flood levels of four floods were compared to levels calculated by an empirical runoff determination method. Outflow capacity tests and dye tracing revealed the nature of drainage within the karst depression.
The Soil Conservation Service runoff determination method and the three-hour maximum rainfall event were used to estimate the level of flooding. Three of the four flood events studied provided deviations between the actual and calculated flood levels of less than 0.26 feet (0.08 …
Negative Ion Drift Velocities In Mixtures Of Methane And Sulphur Hexafluoride, M. C. Cornell, Ian M. Littlewood
Negative Ion Drift Velocities In Mixtures Of Methane And Sulphur Hexafluoride, M. C. Cornell, Ian M. Littlewood
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The velocities of negative ions drifting in mixtures of methane and Sulphur hexafluoride have been measured. Measurements were made as a function of gas composition, reduced electric field strength between 3 and 185 Td, and total gas pressure in the range 100-600 Torr at 300K. The data indicate that SF 6- (SF6) ions are the dominant ion in all of the gas mixtures studied. Extrapolation of the data using Blanc's Law was used to determine the velocity of Sulphur hexafluoride ions drifting in pure methane.

Photoconductivity Parameters In Lithium Niobate, Robert Gerson, J. F. Kirchhoff, L. E. Halliburton, D. A. Bryan
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Measurements on a variety of doped (magnesium and/or iron) and undoped lithium niobate crystals in the oxidized state demonstrate an Arrhenius dependence of dark conductivity on reciprocal temperature between 460 and 590 K. All of the crystals had roughly the same conductivity and activation energy (1.21 eV) over the temperature range, implying that all have about the same free-carrier concentration and mobility. The enhanced photoconductivity of magnesium-doped lithium niobate is attributed to a greatly reduced trapping cross section of Fe3+ for electrons, the smaller cross section being due to a changed substitutional site for Fe3+. The Fe …
Fracture Detection In A Volcanic Oil Reservoir Using Discriminant Analysis Of Well Log Data, Joseph William Cross
Fracture Detection In A Volcanic Oil Reservoir Using Discriminant Analysis Of Well Log Data, Joseph William Cross
OES Theses and Dissertations
A new method of detecting fractures using well logs is presented. The technique uses discriminant analysis to distinguish fractured from unfractured reservoir rock and was developed for the volcanic pay zone of Jatibarang oilfield, West Java, Indonesia.
The a priori information required to derive the discriminant function was provided by 22 wells known to penetrate intervals of either fractured or unfractured volcanics. The samples consisted of these 22 intervals digitized in one-meter increments (1256 meters total thickness). The discriminating variables were the petrophysical measurements made by 10 different types of well logs.
Discriminant analysis correctly classified 94.2% of the total …

Weak Decays Of The H-Dibaryon, Jf Donoghue, E Golowich, Br Holstein
Weak Decays Of The H-Dibaryon, Jf Donoghue, E Golowich, Br Holstein
Barry R Holstein
We calculate decay rates and branching fractions for the postulated S=-2 H dibaryon, both for the expected ΔS=1 channels (nΛ,nΣ0,pΣ-) and for the possible ΔS=2 mode (nn). For ΔS=1 decays we find the S waves are dominated by ΔI=(3/2) transitions due to the Pauli principle, which forces the six-quark final state to be in a SU(3) 27-plet. If observed, this would be the first breakdown of the ΔI=1/2 rule. The lifetime is long, of order 10-8 sec, which should be considered in planning experiments. In the ΔS=2 case, we add a consideration of dispersive effects to our previous calculation of …
The Minimum Size Of The Aids Epidemic In The United States, Ron Brookmeyer, Mitchell Gail
The Minimum Size Of The Aids Epidemic In The United States, Ron Brookmeyer, Mitchell Gail
Ron Brookmeyer
A new method based on the reported incubation period of transfusion-associated AIDS was used to estimate the number of AIDS cases likely to arise in the USA among those infected before 1986. Between 1986 and 1991 102 000 new cases are projected, with a total cumulative incidence of 135 000 AIDS cases. These estimates do not account for new infections after 1985 nor very long incubation periods and are thus the smallest numbers to be expected. Even if new infections can be effectively prevented, the epidemic will be five times larger than the number of cases observed so far.

Phytoplankton Production In The Delaware Estuary: Temporal And Spatial Variation., Jonathan Pennock
School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering
ABSTRACT:
Phytoplankton production in the Delaware Estuary (USA) was measured over several seasonal cycles (1980-1985). Seasonal variability in daily area1 production (JP; g C m-2 d-l) was dlrectly related to chlorophyll concentrations in the upper estuary, ranging from a maximum of 1.1 g C m-' d-' In summer to a minlmum of d-l) dunng summer in the presence of low phytoplankton biomass (2 to 10 kg Chl I-'), and in mid-estuary [2.6 g C d-l) during the spring diatom bloom (50 to 60 yg Chll-l). Desplte the occurrence of maximum nutnent concentrations in the freshwater region, highest JP and 90 …

The Fricke Dosimeter As A 1-Hit Detector, Robert Katz, G. L. Sinclair, M. P. R. Waligorski
Robert Katz Publications
A fit to the experimental data for the response of the Fricke dosimeter to energetic heavy ions is obtained using a calculation of the relative effectiveness of a 1-hit detector, from track theory. We use 2 fitted parameters, the target size, a0, which may be thought to represent a “diffusion length,” and E0, the dose of gamma-rays at which there is an average of one hit per target (the D-37 dose), and a new algorithm for the average radial distribution of dose in liquid water from the passing ion. The G value for ions is then …

The Radial Distribution Of Dose Around The Path Of A Heavy Ion In Liquid Water, M. P. R. Waligorski, R. N. Hamm, Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
Monte Carlo calculations of the radial distribution of dose in liquid water, incorporating energy deposition due to primary excitations and ionizations, have been performed for protons of energy 1, 10, 20, 50, and 100 MeV. By combining these results with earlier semi-empirical formulae used in track structure theory calculations, a corrected analytic formulation has been developed which on radial integration closely reproduces the value of stopping power for protons in the energy range 0.1–1000 MeV. After including a β-dependent ‘effective charge’ formula, this corrected formulation is tested against all published measurements of radial distribution of dose from energetic ions in …

Assignment Of The Lattice Modes In Tcnq0 Single Crystals, K.M. White, K.-H. Brose, Craig J. Eckhardt
Craig J. Eckhardt Publications
A complete assignment of the six librational modes of the TCNQ0 crystal has been made employing both polarized Raman spectroscopic measurements and lattice dynamical calculations. Agreement between theory and experiment is good and modes at 40.5, 74.5, and 96 cm-1 are assigned as Ag active and those at 63, 75.5, and 104 cm-1 are Bg active. The lattice modes are found to be clearly separated from the molecular modes. The study emphasizes the importance of crystal optics and quality in the measurement of the polarized Raman spectra of biaxial crystals. The Journal of Chemical Physics …

Central California Oak Residue Utilization And Marketing: Better Hardwood Management From Improved Utilization, Timothy G. O'Keefe, Douglas D. Piirto
Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences
Limited information and observations indicate that there are some significant amounts of hardwood residue resources now available in the Central Coast area. Experience gained from managing and marketing eastern hardwoods is considered as our basis for dealing with western hardwood problems. Inventory of the oak resource is discussed as a preliminary requirement for management. In addition, hardwood marketing, research and extension needs are also considered. Evidence indicates that western hardwood use will be improved by better funded programs of research and extension in residue utilization and marketing. Improved hardwood utilization will yield both direct and indirect benefits. Direct benefits include …

Beyond The Rigid-Ion Approximation With Spherically Symmetric Ions, L. L. Boyer, M. J. Mehl, J. L. Feldman, John R. Hardy, J. W. Flocken, C. Y. Fong
John R. Hardy Papers
In our recent Letter we introduced an ab initio model for spherically symmetric charge relaxation of ions in a crystal, called potential-induced breathing (PIB), and demonstrated its importance in the calculation of elastic constants. We also investigated the splitting of the longitudinal optic (LO) and transverse optic (TO) mode frequencies, which results from the macroscopic field associated with longitudinal modes. In the discussion immediately before and after Eq. (5) we argued, incorrectly, that the only contributions to the LO-TO splitting from PIB were from terms involving Sk, the derivative of the self-energy of the kth ion with …

Management Measures For The Shark Bay Snapper Fishery 1987 Season., P. Millington
Fisheries management papers
The 1986 Shark Bay snapper fishing season mirrored in almost all respects the situation which will apply when the limited entry regime is put into effect. It was thus an opportunity to assess how effective the measures recommended in the Report of the Shark Bay Snapper Fishery Working Group were in reducing effort in the fishery.

Thin-Film Beam Splitter That Reflects Light As A Half-Wave Retarder And Transmits It Without Change Of Polarization: Application To A Michelson Interferometer, R. M.A. Azzam
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
The refractive index n1 of a transparent layer of quarter-wave optical thickness coating a transparent substrate of refractive index n2 can be chosen to produce half-wave retardation (HWR) in reflection and no change of polarization in refraction at any angle of incidence ø. The function n1(ø, n2), and the associated polarization-independent reflectance of the film-substrate system R(ø, n2) are determined. Such a coated surface can be used as a beam splitter with excellent characteristics (e.g., split fractions that do not depend on source polarization, a split beam whose polarization is identical …

Chromospherically Active Stars. Ii. Hd 82558, A Young Single By Draconis Variable., Francis C. Fekel, Bernard W. Bopp, John L. Africano, Bret D. Goodrich, Leigh Hunter Palmer, Robert Quingley, Theodore Simon
Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications
It is presently noted that the HD 82558 chromospherically active star is a young and rapidly rotating K2 V single BY Draconis variable with very strong far-UV emission features and an H-alpha line filled to the continuum level by emission. HD 82558 has constant velocity and is not a member of the Hyades Supercluster. Its light curve behavior, which appears to have been stable for several hundred rotation cycles, is reminiscent of that of the young, rapidly rotating, single K V variable H II 1883 in the Pleiades; this stability may be characteristic of young, single, chromospherically active stars.
The Esperance Rock Lobster Working Group Interim Report By The Chairman Mr. A. Pallot To The Western Australia Fishing Industry., A. Pallot
Fisheries management papers
In July 1985 the Minister for Fisheries released a discussion paper titled "Arrangements for entry to all fisheries off and along the Western Australian coast" for consideration by all members of the fishing industry. The Australian Fishing Industry Council (W.A. Branch), now the Western Australian Fishing Industry Council (Inc), responded to the discussion paper in March 1986. The following were included in the Council's recommendations: 1. The rock lobster fishery near Esperance be a limited entry fishery. 2. The bench mark date for determining access by April 30, 1985. 3. that the Minister for fisheries establish a representative Government/Industry Working …
