Analytical Applications Of Absorption Spectroelectrochemistry At Grazing Incidence, Julian Tyson Jan 1986

Analytical Applications Of Absorption Spectroelectrochemistry At Grazing Incidence, Julian Tyson

Chemistry Department Faculty Publication Series

Analytical applications of spectroelectrochemistry are limited by the short path-length, in the absorbing medium, that can be produced with most light-beam/electrode configurations. This disadvantage is overcome for grazing incidence. A cell fitted with glassy-carbon electrodes and used in a conventional spectrophotometer is described and applied to model systems illustrating the use of (a) homogeneous redox reactions, (b) homogeneous redox reaction followed by chemical reaction and (c) electro-deposition followed by stripping into a reagent solution. This last technique is the spectroelectrochemical analogue of anodic-stripping voltammetry.

A Comparison Of Curve Fitting Algorithms For Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, S. R. Bysouth, Julian Tyson

Chemistry Department Faculty Publication Series

A comparison of six commercially available curve fitting algorithms for calibration in flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) has been made. Programs using the algorithms were written in BAsrc for a microcomputer and, where possible, tested against the commercial version. Calibration curves for magnesium, chromium and nickel produced by the algorithms were compared, on the basis of the sum of squares of the percentage deviations and its root mean square, with each other and with linear interpolation and manual fitting. The standard deviations of the goodness of fit parameters were calculated to indicate significant differences between the fits obtained. With the …

Flow Injection Atomic Absorption Spectrometry: The Kinetics Of Instrument Response, J. M. H. Appleton, Julian Tyson Jan 1986

Flow Injection Atomic Absorption Spectrometry: The Kinetics Of Instrument Response, J. M. H. Appleton, Julian Tyson

Chemistry Department Faculty Publication Series

The concept of dispersion coefficient is discussed with particular reference to flow injection atomic absorption spectrometry where the detector contributes appreciably to the analytical signal characteristics. Single- and parallel-tank models of instrument response are developed and critically examined. The progress made to date by investigators of nebuliser performance is briefly reviewed prior to developing a semi-empirical extended-tank model of instrument response. The capabilities of this model are explored by deriving a set of equations for instrument response, and comparing the predictions with experimental results. Agreement is generally good. Advantages of the modelling approach are discussed.

A Variable Dispersion Flow Injection Manifold For Calibration And Sample Dilution In Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, Julian Tyson, James R. Mariara, J. M.H. Appleton

Chemistry Department Faculty Publication Series

A flow injection (FI) introduction system for flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) has been constructed for single-standard calibration and sample dilution. Dilution factors ranging from 5.93 to 38.8 in six discrete stages were produced by replicate injection of 12.5-pl volumes into an aqueous carrier stream flowing down lines of different lengths. The dilution factors were measured for five different solutions for each line. No dependence on concentration was found and the relative standard deviations ranged from 0.75 to 3.1%. The manifold was evaluated by the analysis of solutions of magnesium (6,12.5 and 35 p.p.m.), nickel (180 p.p.m.), calcium (75 p.p.m.) …
