Periodic Functions, W. Kenneth Koehler May 1929

Periodic Functions, W. Kenneth Koehler

Bachelors’ Theses

The first known publications on the periodic functions were those of Fantet de Lagnv, a French mathematician born at Lyons in the year 1660. Although previous to this, mathematicians, notably Galilio in his analysis of the cycloid, had studied functions and curves whose properties necessarily involved periodic functions, no specific mention of this property was made.

A Study Of Crime And Criminal Statistics Of Phelps County, State Of Missouri, For The Period 1899-1929, Walter Llyn Bradford

Masters Theses

"It is only within very recent years that the study of Human Society has been undertaken in a really scientific manner. It is true that the social problems have been studied and ideas suggested and discussed for their solution since the very beginning of social organization, for nowhere has there been found a state of society so perfect that all members are completely satisfied with their well-being under it...The study of crime is a part of the science of sociology and must be made according to the same methods as apply to all other kinds of social phenomena"--Introduction, page 1-3.

A Study Of Ball Mills, Robert Lee Kidd Jan 1929

A Study Of Ball Mills, Robert Lee Kidd

Masters Theses

"The study of the ball mill is very complicated, due to the varying conditions existing in the mill. Some of these conditions are: Size of grinding media, size of feed, moisture content, and speed with its effect on the paths of the grinding media. A brief history of fine grinding will first be outlines, after which some of the theories of ball milling will be stated. Then the paths of the grinding media will be given some attention, and a new point of view about the trajectory will be brought out"--Introduction, page 2.

Reaction Of Metallic Iron And Copper Sulphate In The Flotation Of Sphalerite, Charles Wilson Ambler Jan 1929

Reaction Of Metallic Iron And Copper Sulphate In The Flotation Of Sphalerite, Charles Wilson Ambler

Masters Theses

"Copper sulphate is a common flotation reagent for blende ores. Metallic iron is also present in the mill circuit and a reaction between the iron and the salt would be in accord with well known chemistry. The abundance of metallic iron in a flotation feed may be noted by the examination of any feed. It originates, first of all, in the mine, then the coarse crushing machines contribute their share, and finally the fine grinding medium is a large contributor. If the grinding is with cast iron balls in amount of metallics is greater than when steel is used. In …

Anhydrous Alcohol And The Vapor Phase Method Of Preparing It, Cleetis Brown Jan 1929

Anhydrous Alcohol And The Vapor Phase Method Of Preparing It, Cleetis Brown

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Since the almost universal laboratory method of preparing absolute alcohol requires considerable time and trouble, gives a low yield of alcohol and leaves a distilling flask badly clogged with hydrated lime, Professor S.S, Kistler and I undertook the following research in the hope that we might devise a new method that would be both rapid and easy to perform.

Upon reviewing the possibilities, it seemed evident that any method to be rapid would have to involve drying In the vapor phase. Diffusion in a liquid being so slow that when a drying agent is placed in the liquid phase an …

Theories Of Color And Color Vision, M. Regina Wallesch Aug 1928

Theories Of Color And Color Vision, M. Regina Wallesch

Bachelors’ Theses

Theories of color have occupied the human mind since an early date even to the present. According to Professor Frank Allen there are from sixty to seventy different theories. Plato considered color to be due to flame-like particles projected from the pores of matter into the eye. Aristotle thought colors arose from various combinations of white and black.

The Sensitivity Of The Ortho-Tolidine Test For Free Chlorine In Milk Serum, Estelle Downer Jun 1928

The Sensitivity Of The Ortho-Tolidine Test For Free Chlorine In Milk Serum, Estelle Downer

Bachelors’ Theses

In the Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry for November, 1913, J.W. Ellms and S.J. Hauser introduced the ortho-tolidine test for the detection of minute quantities of free chlorine in water. Antecedant to the experimentation of the above men with ortho-tolidine, the starch-iodide test ·was universally used for the· detection of free chlorine. In this test, the chlorine is calculated by liberating iodine from potassium iodide by the available chlorine, and the iodine being titrated with sodium thio sulfate. starch solution is used as the indicator. However, this particular method offers difficulties in the presence of minute quantities of chlorine …

A Study Of The Electric Current Rectifying Properties Of Metallic Salts In Contact With Metals, Simon Sander Share Jun 1928

A Study Of The Electric Current Rectifying Properties Of Metallic Salts In Contact With Metals, Simon Sander Share

Bachelors’ Theses

The property of offering greater electrical resistance to a current when flowing in one direction than when flowing in the opposite direction possessed by some metallic salts in contact under pressure with certain metals is of interest both from a purely scientific viewpoint and from a commercial viewpoint. The phenomenon is of interest to the scientist because it has not yet been properly explained and because a suitable explanation might lead to a better understanding of what actually occurs at the contact surfaces of a metal and a salt and also of the condition of metallic surfaces. The property has …

Graphical Calculation And Computation, Alice Hudson Vallier Jun 1928

Graphical Calculation And Computation, Alice Hudson Vallier

Bachelors’ Theses

The word ’’graph” has lately become a part of the active vocabulary of the ordinarily educated person of today. We may say lately because even fifty years ago the use of the graph to represent data was limited to the knowledge of a few theorizing mathematicians and the miscellaneous disorganized usage of some practical mechanics, engineers, business men and statisticians. The situation is not that fifty years ago the rudiments of graphing were not identical with the bases of graphing data today, at least by such simple methods as are commonly employed in periodicals and newspapers for the enlightenment of …

A Study Of The Temperature Behavior Of Various Liquids When Subjected To Pressures Ranging Between One And One Hundred Pounds Absolute, Jerome John Van De Kamp Jun 1928

A Study Of The Temperature Behavior Of Various Liquids When Subjected To Pressures Ranging Between One And One Hundred Pounds Absolute, Jerome John Van De Kamp

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis is submitted as a partial requirement for the degree of bachelor of science. The problem is one which dates back as far as the science which claims its authorship. It is a problem of which very little is known and one is justified in calling this old problem a youthful one, youthful, of course, in the sense that it is immature and as yet undeveloped. The problem by the very fact that it is in its infancy makes it one of Infinite length. It is a problem which has no greater practical application. Its ultimate value extends into …

Solubility Of Different Waxes In Various Solvents, Sol Leslie Spracker Jun 1928

Solubility Of Different Waxes In Various Solvents, Sol Leslie Spracker

Bachelors’ Theses

The waxes are esters formed by the union of fatty acids and alcohols not belonging to the glycerol series. Hence waxes are sharply distinguished from fats in that they contain no glycerol; they have howe er, many properties in common with true glycerides (fats); thus they can be saponified with alkalies, the salts of fatty acids and alcohols being obtained.

The Aurora Borealis, Magdalen Kramschuster Jun 1928

The Aurora Borealis, Magdalen Kramschuster

Bachelors’ Theses

The Indians wondered if their beloved aurora would return. They watched and philosophized about the dawn, the twilight, the stars and all the phenomena of the heavens. They pondered the mysteries of lightening and thunder. Peoples down through the ages have written poetry about the mighty thunderhead and the lacy cirrus clouds. One by one these mysteries have been solved, but one still remains--the Aurora Polaris. Advances have been made in scientific fields so that we no longer worry whether or not the next day will come. Thunder, to us, is not the voice of an angry god. Rapid strides …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The geological column in northern Utah has had very little detailed study. Those who have made reports on this section have done so only in a very general way, making no detailed sections of any part of the column, excepting that of the Cambrian made by Walcott.1 Other work has been done by Mansfield2 in southeastern Idaho and a general section of the Devonian made in Green Canyon, Bear River Range, Utah by Kindle.3

Due to the lack of any detailed work of this nature being done in the Bear River Range, suggested the matter of making …

Applications Of Infinite Products, Lillian Schnell Apr 1928

Applications Of Infinite Products, Lillian Schnell

Bachelors’ Theses

Jacob Nicolaus Bernoulli (1654-1705) wrote a work on "Ars Conjectandi." It was published eight years after his death. The work consists of four parts. The second part is on permutations and combinations, which Bernoulli used in a proof of the binomial theorem for the case of positive integral exponents. The book contains a formula for the sum of the rth powers of the first n integers. This involves the famous Bernouillian numbers. Bernouilli boasted that by means of his formula he could calculate "Intra semi-quadrantem Horae" the sum of the 10th power: the first thousand integers.

The Preparation Of Certain Inorganic And Organic Compounds Which May Be Of Use In Mineralogical Separations, Clarence Jay Black Jan 1928

The Preparation Of Certain Inorganic And Organic Compounds Which May Be Of Use In Mineralogical Separations, Clarence Jay Black

Masters Theses

"In the work with minerals, there has been many mechanical means devised whereby the ores could be separated from the gangue and other material. Among those means which are used to-day, especially in the laboratory tests upon minerals, to quickly determine the value of an ore, heavy liquids have become quite popular. This means of mechanical separation is merely to place finely ground ore containing particles of varying density into a liquid of heavier density than the greater portion of the mineral, which will allow the heavier portions to sink and the lighter to float, which is usually gangue. This …

Heavy Minerals In The Roubidoux And Other Sandstones Of The Ozark Region (Mo.), Cletus Daniel Cordry Jan 1928

Heavy Minerals In The Roubidoux And Other Sandstones Of The Ozark Region (Mo.), Cletus Daniel Cordry

Masters Theses

"In this study an attempt has been made to determine the usefulness of heavy minerals for correlation of formations over a limited area, in the heart of the Ozark uplift in southeast Missouri. The Roubidoux formation, already definitely correlated by other means, has been rather systematically sampled throughout the area, and the heavy minerals determined to ascertain their dependability for correlation purposes. Several samples from other horizons have been studied for comparison with the Roubidoux. Also, within the area studied there are numerous isolated patches of sandstone, the horizons of which have not been definitely determined. Samples from a few …

A Means Of Making A Segregate Preparatory To Chemical Analysis Of The Sulphide Minerals In A Low-Grade Dolomitic Ore-Pulp Containing Lead, Zinc, And Copper, Julius Bruce Clemmer Jan 1928

A Means Of Making A Segregate Preparatory To Chemical Analysis Of The Sulphide Minerals In A Low-Grade Dolomitic Ore-Pulp Containing Lead, Zinc, And Copper, Julius Bruce Clemmer

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation was to find a means of obtaining from a low-grade dolomitic ore pulp a segregate of the sulphide minerals of lead, zinc, and copper preliminary to chemical analysis so that the chemist's error of 0.03 per cent would be divided by the ratio of the segregate to the entire pulp, and hence be reduced. Two methods of obtaining the segregate were investigated: (1) By float-and-sink tests, and (2) by selective dissolution of the dolomite, which is the main gangue constituent of the ore"--Object of Investigation, page 3.
