Geometry has the distinction of being one of the oldest subjects given in the high-school.

Its subject-matter was formulated and organized by the Greeks into a fine system of thought before the time of Christ. Since leaving the hands of the Greeks, geometry has received only a few minor changes, and these largely in recent years.

Heretofore, the study of geometry has been made almost entirely dependent upon memory and reasoning. Geometricians have been slow in adopting the laboratory and observational methods.

For many years the velocity of gravitation, or more properly, the velocity of propagation of gravitational potential, has been the subject of much theoretical discussion. The magnitude of this velocity according to proposed theories varies from the velocity of light to infinity. According to the theory of relativity, the velocity of gravitation should be equal to that of light, and the success which experimental tests of the theory have met justify this assumption. Solids dissolved in a liquid produce a general decrease in the evaporation rate of the solvent. Experiments were performed, using light naphtha as the solvent and Paraffin, Japan, Carnauba, Candelilla, Ozokerite, Montan, and Bees waxes as solutes. These waxes were selected since they are the waxes most commonly used in the manufacture of floor waxes and work of the kind presented in this thesis finds its greatest application in connection with that industry.

The Sextant in its earliest known form consisted of divided circles and compasses with simply sights. An early Creek astronomer of the second century after Christ, Claudius Ptolemaeus, or more commonly called Ptolemy, wrote a book entitled Megale Syntaxis tes Astron- omias, also known by the Arabic title Almagest. The instrument described in this book was called the Astrolable and was used to measure the angular distance between stars. Waxes, chemically speaking, are a class of esters which consist of mono- or di-hidric alcohols united with the higher fatty acids. These waxes contain free fatty acids, free alcohols and hydrocarbons. A considerable quantity of free cerotic acid (C26H52O2) myricyl palmitate (C16H31O2. C31H63), and high melting point hydrocarbons are found in beeswax. The acids that occur in waxes appear to have an even number of carbon atoms. Paraffine, ceresine, and ozokerite are really not waxes at all according to the chemical conception. The latter two are esters of glycerine united with higher fatty acids.

The phenomena of the separation of substances by 'Various membranes was first -discovered by Thomas Graham, who found that certain materials passed through membranes much more readily than others. This consequently afforded him a norm by which he distinguished a variety of substances. Those which passed through the membrane most readily he called crystalloids, because of their crystalline nature. Those which were retained colloids, because of their gelatinous or glue like consistency. The distinguishing factor is however not a legitimate one, because it has been proven by Dr. Kahlenberg that opposite reactions occur.

Despite the fact that considerable work has been done on cholesterol, relatively little is known about its isomer, phytosterol. Both cholesterol and phytosterol belong to the general group of sterols. Cholesterol is described as an aromatic sterol, a mono~atomic secondary alcohol, containing an iso-propyl and a vinyl group, with a terpene-like structure. Cholesterol was first discovered by Conradi in 1775, then by Gren (1788) in biliary calculi. In 1785 Fourcroy isolated cholesterol from gall-stones, one variety of which is composed almost wholly of it, but it was confused with adipocere, until Chevreul (1814) discovered its true nature, when he declared …

"Zinc ores containing large amounts of ferric oxide, calamine and willemite have been known for a long time among practical zinc metallurgists to be more difficult to reduce than ores of the same type but free from the above named compounds. This has been thought to be due to the high temperatures necessary for the reduction of the zinc ferrite and the zinc silicates by carbon. The ferrite is formed both during the roasting of sulphide ores and during distillation in the retorts, while calamine and willemite are introduced as such in the ores.
