The origin of the problem to be considered in this paper is traced to the observations of John R. Koob, Ph.D., Head of the Chemistry Department of Marquette University. It was his experience to note that the kerosene, in a bottle, containing cut sodium for the organic laboratory, had solidified to a gel, resembling Vaseline in appearance.

This work has been undertaken as a ·result of tests recently carried out at the Greene Brothers' Brook Hill Farm at Genesee Depot, Wisconsin. It was found that cows, when fed artificially dried hay, produce milk in quantities greatly in excess of that accountable from known differences in the hay. Moreover, the milk seemed to have a different flavor - similar to pasture produced milk.

At present nut shells are waste products. This makes their study interesting from a commercial standpoint. In view of the fact that very little work of this kind has been done, nut shell analysis offers interesting research problems as well as excellent practice in the technique or organic analysis.

Such great interest is now being taken in plant pigments that, a thorough investigation of the red pigment yielded by pecan nut shell would be an appreciated contribution to science.

Casing head gasoline obtained from natural gas yields five commercial products. One of these is a mixture of amyl alcohols. As treated by the Sharples Company, West Virginia, pentane is separated and treated with chlorine. Three chlorine derivatives are produced. These are treated with caustic soda and may f'orm eight possible amyl· aloohols~1 The products of the normal pentane, only, are the subject matter of this thesis.

This report sets forth the results of a five year study of the Shoshone region, Idaho. The region is situated in south-central Idaho on both sides of the Snake river. The southern and larger part of the region lies in the Columbia River Plateau province while the northern and smaller part of the area lies in the Northern Rocky Mountains province.

An areal geology map and several cross-sections accompany the report which is further illustrated by numerous photographs.

"The geology of the Rolla quadrangle was mapped by Lee in 1912. At that time all the dolomitic strata above the Roubidoux and beneath the Carboniferous formations in this area were placed in the Jefferson City. A more detailed study of the stratigraphy of the whole Ozark region by Ulrich has shown that some of the strata which had been included in the Jefferson City formation on lithologic grounds are not equivalent to the dolomites in the type section at Jefferson City, Missouri"--Introduction, page [1].

The interest of the writer was directed toward the phenomena of color vision in 1927 as a result of attending concurrently two courses in the University of California touching upon the subject, but treating it quite differently with results far from mutually consistent. Prof. R. S. Minor, in his course on physical optics, discussed color vision from the physicist’s standpoint, making use of the Young-Helmholtz theory; while Prof. G. M. Stratton gave the psychological treatment, based upon the Ladd-Franklin theory, as a part of his general psychology. The present investigation was carried out to show the catalytic effect of some iron and cobalt salts on the oxidation of sodium sulfite solutions by free oxygen. The rate of reaction was determined by measuring the volume of water required to replace the absorbed oxygen. A photograph and diagrammatical arrangement of the apparatus is given, (Page 14). From the preliminary experiments it was found that the rate of oxidation of sodium sulfite solutions is dependent upon concentration, and speed of the shaker.

In studying the history of the cycloid and the related curves, it is interesting to note that the earliest notations and explanations were given not by a mathematician but by an artist. The description and instrumental construction of the epicycloid curve was presented in about 1525 by Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) a celebrated sculptor and painter of Nurnberg in his book "Underweysund der Messung mit dem Zyrkenund Rychtsceyd."
