Seismic Anisotropy As A Function Of Mineralogy And Rock Type In Chester Gneiss Dome, Southeast Vermont, Brittany Watling Jan 2017

Seismic Anisotropy As A Function Of Mineralogy And Rock Type In Chester Gneiss Dome, Southeast Vermont, Brittany Watling

Wayne State University Theses

Our knowledge of composition and structure in middle and lower crustal rocks is limited due to restricted accessibility, and thus comes mainly from studies of seismic velocities. But isotropic seismic velocities are not sufficient to distinguish between the many possible rock types in the middle and lower crust. Seismic anisotropy is the directional dependence of seismic velocity, and may provide further constraints on mineralogy and rock type. This study is focused on characterizing the seismic anisotropy of rocks from the Chester dome in southeast Vermont. We have simplified the Chester dome rock types into four groups based on rock type …

Using 210po/210pb Disequilibria To Characterize The Biogeochemistry And Quantify The Dynamics Of Sea Ice In The Arctic, Katherine Denise Krupp Jan 2017

Using 210po/210pb Disequilibria To Characterize The Biogeochemistry And Quantify The Dynamics Of Sea Ice In The Arctic, Katherine Denise Krupp

Wayne State University Theses

Understanding the biogeochemical cycles of the Arctic Ocean is highly significant due to its many unique characteristics which impact the cycling of important trace elements, isotopes, and nutrients. Furthermore, with its seasonally-changing sea ice extent and substantial role in the global radiation balance, the Arctic is considered a sensitive indicator of global change. The study of 210Po and 210Pb disequilibria is used to determine 1) the residence time of ice-rafted sediments in sea ice, 2) ice floe dynamics such as ice accumulation rates, and 3) biogeochemical characterization of the Arctic due to the natural occurrence and particle reactivity of 210Po …

Multi-Way Factorization Machine For Sentiment Analysis, Jingwei Zhang

Wayne State University Theses

Sentiment analysis is a process of learning the relationship between sentiment label

and text. The research value of sentiment analysis is two-fold: first, it has a wide range

of applications in many sectors and industries, e.g., the industry has flourished due to the

proliferation of commercial applications such as using sentiment analysis as an integrated

part of customer experience strategy. Second, it offers an array of new challenging problems

for research community such as word feature embedding and machine learning. Albeit earlier

methods such as Naïve Bayes (NB), Random Forest (RF), k-Nearest-Neighbours (kNN),

Support Vector Machine (SVM) and more recent …

Adaptive Block And Batch Sizing Forbatched Stream Processing System, Quan Zhang Jan 2017

Adaptive Block And Batch Sizing Forbatched Stream Processing System, Quan Zhang

Wayne State University Theses

The need for real-time and large-scale data processing has led to the development of frameworks for distributed stream processing in clouds. To provide fast, scalable, and fault tolerant stream processing, recent Distributed Stream Processing Systems (DSPS) have proposed to treat streaming workloads as a series of batch jobs, instead of a series of records. Batch-based stream processing systems could process data at high rate, however, it also leads to large end-to-end latency. In this thesis we concentrate on minimizing the end-to-end latency of batched streaming system by leveraging adaptive batch size and execution parallelism tuning. We propose, DyBBS, a heuristic …

An Empirical Demonstration Of The Need For Exact Tests, Vance W. Berger Jan 2017

An Empirical Demonstration Of The Need For Exact Tests, Vance W. Berger

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The robustness of parametric analyses is rarely questioned or qualified. Robustness, generally understood, means the exact and approximate p-values will lie on the same side of alpha for any reasonable data set; and 1) any data set would qualify as reasonable and 2) robustness holds universally, for all alpha levels and approximations. For this to be true, the approximation would need to be perfect all of the time. Any discrepancy between the approximation and the exact p-value, for any combination of alpha level and data set, would constitute a violation. Clearly, this is not true, and when confronted with this …

Study Of Periodical Flow Heat Transfer In An Internal Combustion Engine, Xi Luo Jan 2017

Study Of Periodical Flow Heat Transfer In An Internal Combustion Engine, Xi Luo

Wayne State University Dissertations

In-cylinder heat transfer is one of the most critical physical behaviors which has a direct influence on engine out emission and thermal efficiency for IC engine. In-cylinder wall temperature has to be precisely controlled to achieve high efficiency and low emission. However, this cannot be done without knowing gas-to-wall heat flux. This study reports on the development of a technique suitable for engine in-cylinder surface temperature measurement, as the traditional method is “hard to reach.” A laser induced phosphorescence technique was used to study in-cylinder wall temperature effects on engine out unburned hydrocarbons during the engine transitional period (warm up). …

Probabilistic Personalized Recommendation Models For Heterogeneous Social Data, Vineeth Rakesh Mohan

Wayne State University Dissertations

Content recommendation has risen to a new dimension with the advent of platforms like Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed, Dailybooth, and Instagram. Although this uproar of data has provided us with a goldmine of real-world information, the problem of information overload has become a major barrier in developing predictive models. Therefore, the objective of this The- sis is to propose various recommendation, prediction and information retrieval models that are capable of leveraging such vast heterogeneous content. More specifically, this Thesis focuses on proposing models based on probabilistic generative frameworks for the following tasks: (a) recommending backers and projects in Kickstarter crowdfunding domain …

Structural Basis Of Membrane Protein Scaffolding And Signaling In Human Disease, Joshua Holcomb Jan 2017

Structural Basis Of Membrane Protein Scaffolding And Signaling In Human Disease, Joshua Holcomb

Wayne State University Dissertations

Protein structural elucidation by means of X-ray crystallography is a powerful approach for both insight into a proteins biophysical properties and function. To date X-ray crystallography remains the gold standard in high resolution structural determination and serves as the basis for rational drug design for the purpose of combating a number of human diseases. Such an approach also allows for the exploitation of how various proteins interact with their substrates providing a molecular basis for their physiological function. In this dissertation, using X-ray crystallographic analysis along with other biophysical characterization methods, we seek to understand the mechanistic foundation for which …

Automated Refinement Of Hierarchical Object Graphs, Mohammad Ebrahim Khalaj Jan 2017

Automated Refinement Of Hierarchical Object Graphs, Mohammad Ebrahim Khalaj

Wayne State University Dissertations

Object graphs help explain the runtime structure of a system. To make object graphs convey design intent, one insight is to use

abstraction by hierarchy, i.e., to show objects that are implementation details as children of architecturally-relevant objects from the application domain. But additional information is needed to express this object hierarchy, using ownership type qualifiers in the code. Adding qualifiers after the fact involves manual overhead, and requires developers to switch between adding qualifiers in the code and looking at abstract object graphs to understand the object structures that the qualifiers describe. We propose an approach where developers express …

Horizontal And Vertical Integration Of Bio-Molecular Data, Tin Chi Nguyen Jan 2017

Horizontal And Vertical Integration Of Bio-Molecular Data, Tin Chi Nguyen

Wayne State University Dissertations

Modern biomedical research lies at the crossroads of data gathering, interpretation, and hypothesis testing. Due to noise, study bias, or too small changes in biological signals between disease and healthy, individual studies often fail to identify the true phenomenon. Data integration is the key to obtaining the power needed to pinpoint the biological mechanisms of disease states. Given this, we tried to make important contributions in both horizontal and vertical integration of high-throughput data; the former is meta-analysis of independent studies, while the latter is the integration of multi-omics data.

For horizontal meta-analysis, we developed two frameworks: DANUBE and the …

Robustness And Power Of The Student T, Welch-Aspin, Yuen, Tukey Quick, And Haga Tests, Dong Li Jan 2017

Robustness And Power Of The Student T, Welch-Aspin, Yuen, Tukey Quick, And Haga Tests, Dong Li

Wayne State University Dissertations

Classical parametric statistic procedures are widely used in the research community. However, for classical tests to produce accurate results, the assumptions underlying them must be sufficiently satisfied. When the assumptions are not met, the results of the analysis may be due to the violation of the assumptions, instead of the true pattern of the data. The assumptions are rarely met when analyzing real data. The use of classic parametric methods with violated assumptions may lead to substantive errors in the interpretation of data. As an alternative to normal theory statistics, nonparametric statistical procedures do not make assumptions about the underlying …

Synthesis Of Low-Coordinate Transition Metal Bis(Alkoxide) Complexes And Their Reactivity Toward Small Molecules, Maryam Yousif Jan 2017

Synthesis Of Low-Coordinate Transition Metal Bis(Alkoxide) Complexes And Their Reactivity Toward Small Molecules, Maryam Yousif

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation focused on the synthesis of new transition metal complexes in bis(alkoxide) ligand environments and the investigation of their reactivity in nitrene-group transfer catalysis and small molecule activation. Treatment of Cr(N(SiMe3)2)2(THF)2 with two equivalents of HOR (OR = OCtBu2Ph) led to the formation of the chromium(II) alkoxide dimer, Cr2(OR)4. Upon the reaction with bulky aryl and alkyl azides, Cr2(OR)4 led to the stable Cr(IV) mono(imido) complexes, Cr(OR)2(NR), featuring trigonal planar metal centers. In contrast, less bulky aryl azides led to the formation of chromium (VI) bis(imido) complexes Cr(OR)2(NR)2, independent of the amount of azide used. Chromium(IV) mono(imido) species Cr(OR)2(NR) …

Accumulating Risk: Environmental Justice And The History Of Capitalism In Detroit, 1880-2015, Josiah John Rector Jan 2017

Accumulating Risk: Environmental Justice And The History Of Capitalism In Detroit, 1880-2015, Josiah John Rector

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation is an environmental history of Detroit, Michigan from the 19th century to the present. Recent scholarship on the history of capitalism has largely ignored the problem of environmental inequality, and the negative externalities of economic growth. In contrast, studies of the environmental justice movement have richly documented race, class, and gender inequalities in environmental risk exposure. However, they have neglected the relationship between the development of the environmental justice movement and the restructuring of American capitalism since the 1970s, including deindustrialization and the shift to neoliberalism. Bringing these fields together, this dissertation connects Detroit’s long-term economic transformation to …

Development Of A Risk Assessment Framework To Predict Invasive Species Establishment For Multiple Taxonomic Groups And Vectors Of Introduction, Alisha D. Davidson, Abigail J. Fusaro, Rochelle A. Sturtevant, Edward S. Rutherford, Donna R. Kashian Nov 2016

Development Of A Risk Assessment Framework To Predict Invasive Species Establishment For Multiple Taxonomic Groups And Vectors Of Introduction, Alisha D. Davidson, Abigail J. Fusaro, Rochelle A. Sturtevant, Edward S. Rutherford, Donna R. Kashian

Biological Sciences Faculty Research Publications

A thorough assessment of aquatic nonindigenous species’ risk facilitates successful monitoring and prevention activities. However, species- and vector-specific information is often limited and difficult to synthesize across a single risk framework. To address this need, we developed an assessment framework capable of estimating the potential for introduction, establishment, and impact by aquatic nonindigenous species from diverse spatial origins and taxonomic classification, in novel environments. Our model builds on previous approaches, while taking on a new perspective for evaluation across species, vectors and stages to overcome the limitations imposed by single species and single vector assessments. We applied this globally-relevant framework …

Longitudinal Stability Of Effect Sizes In Education Research, Joshua Stephens Nov 2016

Longitudinal Stability Of Effect Sizes In Education Research, Joshua Stephens

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Educators use meta-analyses to decide best practices. It has been suggested that effect sizes have declined over time due to various biases. This study applies an established methodological framework to educational meta-analyses and finds that effect sizes have increased from 1970–present. Potential causes for this phenomenon are discussed.

Doubly Censored Data From Two-Component Mixture Of Inverse Weibull Distributions: Theory And Applications, Tabassum Sindhu, Navid Feroze, Muhammad Aslam Nov 2016

Doubly Censored Data From Two-Component Mixture Of Inverse Weibull Distributions: Theory And Applications, Tabassum Sindhu, Navid Feroze, Muhammad Aslam

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Finite mixture distributions consist of a weighted sum of standard distributions and are a useful tool for reliability analysis of a heterogeneous population. They provide the necessary flexibility to model failure distributions of components with multiple failure models. The analysis of the mixture models under Bayesian framework has received sizable attention in the recent years. However, the Bayesian estimation of the mixture models under doubly censored samples has not yet been introduced in the literature. The main objective of this paper is to discuss the Bayes estimation of the inverse Weibull mixture distributions under doubly censoring. Different priors and loss …

Bayesian Analysis Of Discrete Skewed Laplace Distribution, A. Hossianzadeh, K Zare Nov 2016

Bayesian Analysis Of Discrete Skewed Laplace Distribution, A. Hossianzadeh, K Zare

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The discrete skewed Laplace distribution is a flexible distribution with integer domain and simple closed form that can be applied to model count data. Parameters are estimated under empirical Bayes (EB) analysis and comparison are made between the Bayesian parameter estimation and classical parameter estimation, i.e. the maximum likelihood (ML) approach. The results show that the Bayesian parameter estimations are preferable.

A Comparison Of Usual T-Test Statistic And Modified T-Test Statistics On Skewed Distribution Functions, Wooi K. Lim, Alice W. Lim Nov 2016

A Comparison Of Usual T-Test Statistic And Modified T-Test Statistics On Skewed Distribution Functions, Wooi K. Lim, Alice W. Lim

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

When the sample size n is small, the random variable T= √n(\overline{X} – μ)/S is said to follow a central t distribution with degrees of freedom (n – 1), where \overline{X} is the sample mean and S is the sample standard deviation, provided that the data X ~ N (μ, σ2). The random variable T can be used as a test statistic to hypothesize the population mean μ. Some argue that the t-test statistic is robust against the normality of the distribution and claim that the normality assumption is not necessary. In this …

This paper develops credible interval for the median of the lognormal distribution. The estimated coverage probability and average length of the credible interval is compared with the confidence interval using Monte Carlo simulation.

The Br2 – Weighting Method For Estimating The Effects Of Air Pollution On Population Health, Goran Krstic, Nikolas S. Krstic, Mauricio Zambrano-Bigiarini Nov 2016

The Br2 – Weighting Method For Estimating The Effects Of Air Pollution On Population Health, Goran Krstic, Nikolas S. Krstic, Mauricio Zambrano-Bigiarini

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Uncertainties, limitations and biases may impede the correct application of concentration-response linear functions to estimate the effects of air pollution exposure on population health. The reliability of a prediction depends largely on the strength of the linear correlation between the studied variables. This work proposes the joint use of the coefficient of determination, r2, with the regression slope, b, as an improved measure of the strength of the linear relation between air pollution and its effects on population health. The proposed br2‑weighting method offers more reliable inferences about the potential effects of air pollution on …

Estimating The Parameter Of Exponential Distribution Under Type Ii Censoring From Fuzzy Data, Iman Makhdoom, Parviz Nasiri, Abbas Pak Nov 2016

Estimating The Parameter Of Exponential Distribution Under Type Ii Censoring From Fuzzy Data, Iman Makhdoom, Parviz Nasiri, Abbas Pak

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The problem of estimating the parameter of Exponential distribution on the basis of type II censoring scheme is considered when the available data are in the form of fuzzy numbers. The Bayes estimate of the unknown parameter is obtained by using the approximation forms of Lindley (1980) and Tierney and Kadane (1986) under the assumption of gamma prior. The highest posterior density (HPD) estimate of the parameter of interest is found. A Monte Carlo simulation is used to compare the performances of the different methods. A real data set is investigated to illustrate the applicability of …

Preliminary Tests Of Normality When Comparing Three Independent Samples, Björn Lantz, Roy Andersson, Peter Manfredsson

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

This paper uses simulation to explore the performance of a two-stage procedure where a preliminary Shapiro-Wilk test is used to choose between the ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests as a three-sample location test. The results suggest that the two-stage procedure actually seems to be preferable when conducting such location tests.

Limited Failure Censored Life Test Sampling Plan In Burr Type X Distribution, R. R. L. Kantam, M. S. Ravikumar Nov 2016

Limited Failure Censored Life Test Sampling Plan In Burr Type X Distribution, R. R. L. Kantam, M. S. Ravikumar

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The Burr type X distribution is considered as a life time random variable of a product whose lots are to be decided for acceptance or otherwise on the basis of sample lifetimes drawn from the lot. The sample is divided into various groups in order to develop a group sampling plan in such a way that the life testing experiment is terminated as soon as the first failure in each group is observed. The acceptance criterion based on the theory of order statistics is proposed and is shown to be more economical than a criterion proposed in the earlier similar …

Comparison Of Some Multivariate Nonparametric Tests In Profile Analysis To Repeated Measurements, Mehrdad Vossoughi, Shila Shahvali, Erfan Sadeghi

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Through Monte Carlo simulations, the performance of six multivariate nonparametric tests for testing the hypothesis of parallelism in profile analysis was studied. In conclusion, the tests based on ranks were as efficient as Hotelling's T2 under multivariate normal distribution. For the heavy tailed distribution, the tests based on signs performed best.

On Generalizing Cumulative Ordered Regression Models, Robert W. Walker Nov 2016

On Generalizing Cumulative Ordered Regression Models, Robert W. Walker

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

We examine models that relax proportionality in cumulative ordered regression models. Something fundamental arising from ordered variables and stochastic ordering implies a partitioning. Efforts to relax proportionality also relax the ability to collapse an inherently multidimensional problem to a partitioning of the (unidimensional) real line. It is surprising and unfortunate to find that deviations from proportionality are sufficient to generate internal contradictions; undecidable propositions must exist by relaxing proportional odds without other relevant and significant changes in the underlying model. We prove a single theorem linking continuous support and partitions of a latent space to show that for these two …
