Melting and differentiation are fundamental to early solar system evolution on planetary bodies that accreted enough material to heat up radioactively or through impacts and breach their solidi. Partially and fully melted material is present in the meteorite record in the form of primitive achondrites and achondrites, which are fragments of planetesimals that underwent heating events in the first few million years of solar system history. Although the vast majority of this material is mafic or ultramafic, new evolved samples, recovered in the last few decades, are pushing the petrologic and geochemical boundaries of planetesimal melting, differentiation, and crust formation. …

This paper will outline a Debiased Sinkhorn Divergence driven Bayesian inversion framework. Conventionally, a Gaussian Driven Bayesian framework is used when performing Bayesian inversion. A major issue with this Gaussian framework is that the Gaussian likelihood, driven by the L2 norm, is not affected by phase shift in a given signal. This issue has been addressed in [1] using a Wasserstein framework. However, the Wasserstein framework still has an issue because it assumes statistical independence when multidimensional signals are analyzed. Recent breakthroughs in nanophotonics have brought new opportunities to control and manipulate light at the nanoscale. The optical properties of metallic nanostructures have attracted particular interest because of their plasmon resonances, which couple strongly with visible light, and generate large near-field enhancements in their vicinity. In the first part of this thesis, we investigate the fundamental limits of the local density of photonic states near nanostructures by analyzing a sum rule relating its spectral integral to the field induced by a static dipole. The home range (HR) is a fundamental manifestation of an animal’s spatial behavior, but its study has been limited by unclear, unreliable, and unstandardized methodological approaches for measurement. The lack of a comprehensive evaluation of the influence of components of the HR estimation process has hampered consensus over best practices for collecting and analysing movement data. This thesis examined the geospatial and temporal grazing patterns of domesticated livestock to model individual-level exposure potential to abandoned uranium mine (AUM) waste in a tribal community in the Southwest United States. Lotek Litetrack Global Positioning System (GPS) collars collected data at 20-minute-intervals for 2 flocks of sheep and goats during the Spring and Summer of 2019. Depending on the flock and individual animals, tracking time ranges from 10 days to four months. The redshifted 21 cm signal from neutral hydrogen offers one of the best observational probes of Cosmic Dawn and the Epoch of Reionization. This dissertation presents an effort to detect the redshifted 21 cm signal using the Long Wavelength Array station located on the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico, USA (LWA-SV). The major goal is to validate the potential detection reported by the EDGES collaboration. This measurement requires a dynamic range on the order of 105 in order to disentangle the cosmological signal from the Galactic foregrounds. When developing a system, considering system performance from a user perspective can be done through operational testing|assessing the ability of representative users to accomplish tasks with the system in operationally representative environments. This critical process can be expensive and time-consuming. We show how to leverage an existing design of experiments (DOE) process to construct a Bayesian adaptive design. This method allows for interim analyses using predictive probabilities to stop testing early for success or futility. Furthermore, operational environments are directly used in product evaluation. It has long been assumed that fishes were unimportant in the diet of past Pueblo people in the U.S. Southwest. Yet, small numbers of fish remains are consistently recovered from Late pre-Hispanic/Early Historic archaeological sites in the Middle Rio Grande of New Mexico. The end of drought conditions may have impacted food choice and fishing decisions during this time. I use behavioral ecology to understand how fishing could have been an optimal food-getting strategy for Ancestral Pueblo farmers. The ChemCam instrument collected a wealth of data during the first 15 drill campaigns and on the distribution of trace elements at Yellowknife Bay, Mars. The drill sites investigation showed that most sites were geochemically homogenous down the depth of the drill hole. Two sites in the Stimson formation contained a vertical gradient of decreasing silica down > 3 cm. This gradient may be the result of groundwater flow and is likely recent, within 2.3 Ma. The trace element research was grounded with an analog study at the Valle Grande paleolake in New Mexico. We observed progressive alteration in the minerology …

Question answering systems are models that can perform natural language processing (NLP) on a question, retrieve an answer from a datasource, and communicate it to a user. In question answering systems, it is important for the system to learn an underlying representation for a piece of text. There are many systems that have achieved incredible accuracy on question answering datasets such as the Stanford Question and Answer Dataset (SQuAD), but these systems often encode their knowledge in a manner that is impossible to verify. The secular chemical marine sediment trend showing an increase in δ18O over geologic time has traditionally been investigated using δ18O modelling of ancient ocean compositions, ocean surface temperatures, and sample diagenetic alteration. This study presents a triple oxygen isotope mass balance for the oceans using high precision δ18O and Δ'17O measurements of altered oceanic crust. The mass balance model predicts an ice-free seawater with δ18O = -0.29‰ and Δ’17O = -0.002‰ with steady state reached at approximately (0.5 to 1)×109 years. This thesis discusses algorithms for the uniform interpolation problem and presents their implementation for the following theories: (quantifier-free) equality with uninterpreted functions (EUF), unit two-variable per inequality (UTVPI), and theoretic aspects for the combination of the two previous theories. The uniform interpolation algorithms implemented in this thesis were originally proposed in \cite{KAPUR2017}. Refutational proof-based solutions are the usual approach of many interpolation algorithms \cite{10.1007/978-3-642-00768-2_34, mcmillan2011interpolants, 10.1007/978-3-540-24730-2_2}. The approach taken in \cite{KAPUR2017} relies on quantifier-elimination heuristics to construct a uniform interpolant using one of the two formulas involved in the interpolation problem. Conventional measurement technology is unable to extract the most amount of information possible from coherent states of light. Non-Gaussian measurements which can count individual photons can surpass the sensitivity limits of ideal conventional strategies, and approach the ultimate limits achievable given by quantum mechanics. This thesis presents investigations and demonstrations of these unconventional measurements, which utilize coherent operations and single photon counting. This thesis shows that non-Gaussian measurements can outperform conventional strategies in estimation tasks as well as a variety of communication problems. Diversity – Independent Factors Predict Elevated Extinction Rates, Dustin Perriguey, Corinne Myers, Jason Moore, Louis Scuderi

Multiple linear regression was used to determine the relationships between diversity-independent factors (i.e., abiotic, climatic) 2, 5, and 10 Myrs-prior to the most elevated Phanerozoic extinctions. We constructed five abiotic variables from Phanerozoic proxy records1–5 to compare to extinction rates: mean temperature, temperature instability, carbon cycle instability, continental weathering rates, and habitat instability. All three models were statistically significant (P < 0.05) and explained > 70% of the variation in Alroy’s6 three-timer generic extinction rates. However, the 2 Myr-prior model explained the most variance in extinction rates and had the most predictive power, based on adjusted and predictive R2 (~ 72% and 41%, respectively). Carbon …

Automated approaches for parameter and algorithm selection greatly democratize fields such as machine learning, saving time and money as hiring experts can be prohibitively expensive. Unfortunately, anomaly detection is difficult to automate due to subjectivity and class imbalance. An anomaly detection system is presented that incorporates human-in-the-loop techniques and is dynamic, scalable, and able to work with non-annotated data. By focusing on meta-features of the input data, the system can intelligently choose the most promising anomaly detection methods. The system is agnostic to the medium of data; it only expects the data to be sequential in nature.

Stars on the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) are of low to intermediate mass and have reached the end stages of stellar evolution. The mass-loss that stars undergo at this phase enshrouds the central star in a circumstellar envelope (CSE) that redistributes most of the stellar light into the infrared (IR) regime of the spectrum. In the CSEs of oxygen-rich AGB stars molecules including SiO form, and under certain conditions maser emission from SiO can make AGB stars bright beacons at radio frequencies (e.g., 43 and 86 GHz). Silicon photonics is an attractive approach to cost-effective integrated optics due to the infrastructure established for silicon CMOS electronics. The material properties of silicon however are not ideal for optical devices. Specifically, silicon lacks the ability to easily produce light-emitting devices due to its indirect bandgap, and has a centro-symmetric crystal structure which does not facilitate the Pockels effect required for linear modulation. This dissertation presents analysis of experiments and simulations executed to develop the auto-magnetizing liner concept (AutoMag) for use as an alternative premagnetization mechanism for MagLIF. Tests of each stage of AutoMag (magnetization, dielectric breakdown, and implosion) were executed on the Mykonos accelerator and the Z accelerator. Experiments demonstrate strong peak axial magnetic field production (20 – 150 T), dielectric breakdown initiation that depends on global induced electric field across the target, and a level of cylindrical implosion uniformity high enough to be useful for prospective fusion-fuel-filled (auto-magnetized MagLIF) experiments.

The Bluff River Trail (BRT) is a future 10+ mile trail along the San Juan River corridor in the 4-Corners region of the Southwestern United States. By asking, what is the land ethic of the Bluff Community? this qualitative study identifies behaviors and beliefs, or land ethics, between seven Bluff residents and the San Juan River corridor. A land ethic contributes to the social re/production of space; therefore, third space theory contextualizes intersecting and contradicting spatialities evidenced in data. Understanding the performance of parallel and distributed programs remains a focal point in determining how compute systems can be optimized to achieve exascale performance. Lightweight, statistical models allow developers to both characterize and predict performance trade-offs, especially as HPC systems become more heterogeneous with many-core CPUs and GPUs. This thesis presents a lightweight, statistical modeling approach of performance variation which leverages extreme value theory by focusing on the maximum length of distributed workload intervals. In 1993, Dwork and Naor proposed using computational puzzles, a resource burning mechanism, to combat spam email. In the ensuing three decades, resource burning has broadened to include communication capacity, computer memory, and human effort. It has become a well-established tool in distributed security. Due to the cost attached to utilizing resource burning mechanism, these have not been popularized in domains apart from cryptocurrency.

The petrology and mineralogy of calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs) from CV3 carbonaceous chondrites have been investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The goal of this dissertation is twofold: (1) to gain new insights into the nebular processes, such as vapor-solid reactions, accretion, transport, that are responsible for the formation of non-igneous CAIs, and (2) to better understand the role of fluid in the secondary alteration of CAIs on the CV3 chondrite parent body. This work represents the first systematic microstructural study of CAIs from CV3 chondrites.

Transient searches in radio astronomy have discovered some of the most extreme astrophysical phenomena in our universe. This has enabled us to study the physics of these explosive and dynamic sources. Most of the transient searches over the past 70 years have been at frequencies higher than 100 MHz leaving the transient sky below 100 MHz unexplored. The Long Wavelength Array (LWA) telescope offers an excellent opportunity to study the transient sky below 100 MHz with its wide field of view, high sensitivity and fast imaging at shorter timescales.
