First Measurements Of Earth Albedo Neutrons In Space, James R. Place Dec 1972

First Measurements Of Earth Albedo Neutrons In Space, James R. Place

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

NASA satellite OSO-6 carried as part of its payload a proton recoil telescope capable of detecting neutrons between 40 and 200 MeV with directional discrimination. Sixteen months of data from this instrument were analyzed with a view to determining properties of the earth albedo neutron flux above the atmosphere.

The variation of albedo neutron flux with geomagnetic latitude was found to be 1:4 between 0° and 40°. The angular distribution shows that about 40% fewer neutrons come upward from directly beneath the satellite compared to the number coming from a direction tangential to the top of the atmosphere. These results …

Acidities In Ethanol/Water Solvents; The Pka Of Hf., Raymond M. Merrill Dec 1972

Acidities In Ethanol/Water Solvents; The Pka Of Hf., Raymond M. Merrill

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The acidity of hydrofluoric acid in mixed ethanol/ water solvent systems was studied by determining the pKa of HF in a number of different ethanol concentrations. The effect of changing temperature on the acidity of HF in these media was also examined.

The pKa's were determined using a lanthanum fluoride membrane Fluoride Specific Ion Electrode and a glass pH electrode versus the same reference electrode. The method eliminates the need to determine liquid junction potentials. By determining the pKa for HF in each ethanol/water mixture, at a number of different temperatures, thermodynamic parameters, such as free energy, enthalpy, entropy, and …

The Dacites Of The Washakie Needles, Bunsen Peak, And The Birch Hills, Wyoming, And Their Relationship To The Absaroka-Gallatin Volcanic Province, Linda Lou Anderson Love

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

ABSTRACT

TI1e Washakie Needles, Bunsen Peak, and Birch Hills dacites are three of many plugs which intrude the Eocene flows and volcaniclastic rocks of the Absaroka-Gallatin volcanic province. The dacites contain phenocrysts of plagioclase (oligoclase to andesine), biotite, and resorbed quartz. The dacites of the Washakie Needles and Bunsen Peak also contain phenocrysts of hornblende. The rocks of Bunsen Peak and the Birch Hills have two feldspar phases (oligoclase to andesine and sanidine) and quartz in the groundmass. The Washakie Needles dacite groundmass is composed of one feldspar (andesine to anorthoclase) and quartz. The fission track ages of the dacites …

Gravity Survey Of The Mogolion Plateau Volcanic Province, Southwestern New Mexico., Douglas Hugh Krohn

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

A regional gravity survey has been conducted over the Mogollon Plateau, a mid-Tertiary volcano-tectonic complex 125 km in diameter located in southwestern New Mexico. The complete Bouguer gravity map (3 milligal contour interval) shows gravity values ranging form -167 milligals over an outcrop of Precambrian rocks near Silver City, on the southern rim of the Plateau to -251 milligals over an alluvium filled graben east of Reserve, in the northwestern part of the Plateau giving a maximum relief of 84 milligals. Gravity data show that in general the Mogollon Plateau is an area of low density rocks: gravity values within …

Development Of The Oso-6 High-Energy Neutron Detector And Correlation Of Measured Solar Neutron Fluxes To Solar Flares, Frederick Young Jul 1972

Development Of The Oso-6 High-Energy Neutron Detector And Correlation Of Measured Solar Neutron Fluxes To Solar Flares, Frederick Young

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

In an attempt to understand certain of the high energy processes that occur in the solar and terrestrial atmospheres and the interplanetary medium a detector of 20 to 160 MeV neutrons had been designed and constructed for inclusion in the NASA Orbiting Solar Observatory, Satellite OSO-G, which was launched into a near circular orbit at approximately 500 km altitude in August 1969. Both the angle of incidence and the energy of the neutron are determined by a telescopic arrangement of four scintillation plastic counters (Pilot B; hydrogen to carbon ratio 1:1) which generates proton recoils and provides pulse heights for …

Synthesis Of Derivatives Of Pyrido [3,4-D]Pyridazines, Diane (D'Ottavio) Martin Jun 1972

Synthesis Of Derivatives Of Pyrido [3,4-D]Pyridazines, Diane (D'Ottavio) Martin

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The current interest in the biological activity of certain 1 ,4-disubstituted pyrido[2 ,3-d]pyridazines prompted the investigation of various derivatives of the isomeric pyrido[3,4-d]pyridazine ring system. Thus, 1,4 dichloro[3,4-d]pyridazine was treated with thiourea and the intermediate thiouronium salt hydrolyzed to give pyrido[3, 4-d]pyridazine-1,4(2H,3H)-dithione which was subsequently alkylated to give 1,4-bis(alkylthio)pyrido[3,4-d]pyridazines. On the other hand, 1,4-bis(arylthio)pyrido[3,4-d]pyridazines were prepared by the reaction of 1,4-dichloropyrido[3,4-d]pyridazine with various substituted thiophenols. Furthermore, treatment of 1,4-dichloropyrido[3,4-d]pyridazine with a variety of substituted anilines gave the corresponding 1,4-disubstituted aniline derivatives, whereas reaction with alkylamines afforded only the 1(4)-chloro-4(1)-alkylaminopyrido[3,4-d]pyridazines. When 1-chloropyrido[3,4-d]pyridazine-4(3H)-one or 4-chloropyrido[3,4-d]pyridazine-1(2H)-one was treated with hydrazine, the corresponding …

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The mapped area is in Sandoval County, New Mexico, 4 miles east of La Ventana. Precambrian rocks in the core of the Nacimiento uplift in this area consist mainly of quartz monzonite gneiss which has been intruded by granite. Hornblende schist xenoliths, zones of sheared quartz-plagioclase schistose gneiss, and mafic and leucocratic dike rocks are less abundant. Strata totaling 6200 feet, ranging from the Pennsylvanian Madera Formation through the Cretaceous Mancos Formation, are exposed in the area. Overlying the marine Madera Formation is 3400 feet of continental, marginal marine, and evaporite deposits consisting in ascending order of the Permian Abo, …

Isopathic Graphs And Airport Graphs, Kim T. Rawlinson May 1972

Isopathic Graphs And Airport Graphs, Kim T. Rawlinson

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

This paper explores two kinds of graphs, isopathic graphs and air port graphs. A distance property of graphs in general is also examined.

Isopathic graphs are graphs in which every maximal path has the same length. The major theorem of this section characterizes isopathic graphs as extended stars, bipartite or hamiltonian. There is then a discussion of the latter two classes of isopathic graphs.

At the end of Section I, there is an introduction to isopathic digraphs, a natural concern after an exposure to isopathic graphs.

Airport graphs, more appropriately snob graphs, can be thought of in the following way. …

A Geochemical Study Of Distribution Of Elements In Ores And Limestones From New Jersey Zinc Mines, Hanover, New Mexico, Dasharatham Sayala

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Limestone samples (424) from both surface and subsurface horizons in the New Jersey Zinc mines at Hanover have been analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry for Ag, Cd, Mn, Pb, Zn, Cu and Sn. The leadzinc ore bodies, occurring in Paleozoic limestones are a typical example of hydrothermal deposits; and are related to the Hanover intrusive. The distribution of trace elements in surface limestones was mainly due to primary dispersion, partly due to secondary dispersion. The depth of ore mineralization, concentration of element in ore solutions, porosity of limestones, diffusion coefficients of element, and the chemical nature of elements in the …

Acid-Base Titrations In Sulfolane., Francine O. Lawrence Apr 1972

Acid-Base Titrations In Sulfolane., Francine O. Lawrence

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

A study of the solvent effects of sulfolane (tetrahydrothiophene 1,1-dioxide, tetramethylene sulfone) upon a series of acids and several bases has been conducted. A procedure is presented for purifying sulfolane which results in a solvent of very low water content (5 x 10^-4 M ) and very few impurities, as shown by its cooling curve. Potentiometric and conductometric measurements of additions of acids and bases to purified sulfolane and of various acid-base titrations were made. The series of carboxylic acids included benzoic, orthomethoxybenzoic, and three different monochlorobenzoic acids. The bases investigated included sodium methoxide, pyridine, and diphenylguanidine. Interpretation of the …

Continuous Wave Co2 Laser Degradation And Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Organic Polymers., Stanley G. Coloff Mar 1972

Continuous Wave Co2 Laser Degradation And Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Organic Polymers., Stanley G. Coloff

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Previous laser-mass spectrometer and laser-gas-chromatographic instruments for study of organic polymer degradation have used high power pulsed lasers (ruby, Nd-glass) which limit sample characterization due to extensive fragmentation.

A new experimental technique has been developed for high temperature pyrolysis and rapid analysis of organic polymers. The experimental technique combines a low power continuous wave CO2 laser for sample pyrolysis and a time-of-flight mass spectrometer to analyze degradation products. The laser built for use in this study was a continuous flow CO2 gas-molecular laser excited by high voltage direct current with maximum power of 10 watts at a wavelength of 10600 …
