A Spectrophotometric Study Of The Analytical Chemistry Of Vanadium, Kenton E. Bentley Nov 1958

A Spectrophotometric Study Of The Analytical Chemistry Of Vanadium, Kenton E. Bentley

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Vanadium is most frequently encountered in analytical chemistry in the volumetric determination of vanadium by oxidation-reduction titration. Vanadium is rarely determined gravimetrically and finds little use as a reagent in gravimetric analysis. The simple ionic forms of the valence states of vanadium and the colors of acidic, aqueous solutions of these ions, as reported in the literature, are listed in Table 1. There is some confusion in the nomenclature of the ionic forms; that given in Table 1 is by analogy to chromium.

The Synthesis Of Some Triazole Derivatives, John M. Collier Nov 1958

The Synthesis Of Some Triazole Derivatives, John M. Collier

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The triazoles have been known since the late 1800's when von Pechmann discovered the ring system during the course of his work with osazones. He first assigned the name "osotriazone" to the parent ring; this was later changed to "osotriazole", a name which is still retained for certain derivatives obtained from the sugar osazones.

The Synthesis Of Some Fluorine Derivatives As Potential Scintillation Solutes, Martin Dennis Barnett Oct 1958

The Synthesis Of Some Fluorine Derivatives As Potential Scintillation Solutes, Martin Dennis Barnett

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

In connection with work being carried out, in part, by the Biomedical Research Group, Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, on the evaluation of organic compounds as solutes in liquid scintillation detector systems, it seemed of interest to investigate the liquid scintillation properties of fluorine analogues of p-terphenyl and p-quaterphenyl. These compounds have been shown to possess remarkable scintillation properties; however, the use of p-quaterphenyl has been severely curtailed by its low solubility in toluene. Accordingly, the synthesis of a number of 2- and 2,7-substituted fluorines was carried out in an effort to obtain a more soluble, completely conjugated aromatic system and …

Thermodynamic Properties Of The System Pucl3-Kcl, Robert Benz Aug 1958

Thermodynamic Properties Of The System Pucl3-Kcl, Robert Benz

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

This paper is a dissertation on a study of the determination of the Gibbs free energy of formation of plutonium chloride using potentiometric measurements obtained from a galvanic cell of the type,

Ta, Pu(1)/ PuCl3-KCl(1,N1)/ Cl2(g), C.

The terminals of the two electrodes, tantalum and graphite, have been included in the representation inasmuch as their effects must be taken into consideration in the design of the cell; however, in order that the desired virtual cell reaction be realized, it is necessary that these terminals be chemically inert.

Some Aspects Of The Non-Aqueous Chemistry Of The Uranium Chlorides, Richard E. Panzer Jul 1958

Some Aspects Of The Non-Aqueous Chemistry Of The Uranium Chlorides, Richard E. Panzer

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The original object of this investigation was not only to investigate the chemistry and preparation of the complex compound, UCl5•PCl5, but to separate it into its constituents, uranium pentachloride and phosphorus pentachloride, thus establishing a new method of preparing the uranium pentachloride. Optimum conditions for the preparative reaction of UCl5•PCl5, partially investigated by Suttle (25), were to be established. Reactions were to be investigated which might be used for preparation of similar compounds of uranium pentachloride. The possible existence of other uranium pentachloride-phosphorus pentachloride compounds was to be determined. Electrolyses in phosphorus …

Synthesis Of 4, 7-Disubstituted Derivatives Of Imidazo-[4,5-D]-Pyridazine And Related Compounds, William Seese

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

When this study was contemplated, no imidazo [4,5-d] pyridazines had been reported in the literature. Compounds of special interest due to their possible antitumor activity were the 4,7-dimercapoto-, the 4,7-diamino-, the 4-mercapto-, and the 4-aminoimidazo [4,5-d] pyridazines together with unsubstituted imidazo [4,5-d] pyridazine. Key intermediates in the preparation of substituted amines in the ring system were the 4-chloro-, and the 4,7-dichloro- derivatives.

The Magnesium-Hydrogen System, J. Frederick Stampfer Jr. Jun 1958

The Magnesium-Hydrogen System, J. Frederick Stampfer Jr.

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The motivating factor for this investigation of the magnesium-hydrogen system was the recent interest in the hydride of beryllium. Although beryllium hydride has been prepared by the pyrolysis of di-t-butylberyllium, no evidence for the direct union of beryllium and hydrogen has been reported. It was thought that an examination of the reaction between magnesium and hydrogen and determination of the thermodynamic relations involved might have a bearing on this phenomenon. Also, the properties of magnesium hydride are interesting from an over-all periodic table viewpoint. The hydrides of beryllium and magnesium are usually considered to be intermediary between the saline, or …

On The Relation Between The Cosmic Ray Air Shower Spectrum And The Pulse Height Spectrum Of A Large Scintillator, Robert T. Barton Jun 1958

On The Relation Between The Cosmic Ray Air Shower Spectrum And The Pulse Height Spectrum Of A Large Scintillator, Robert T. Barton

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The purpose of this paper is to study other lateral distribution functions proposed by various authors, to select an alternative to the one used previously, to repeat the calculations of the required quantities using the alternative function, and to comment on the relative merits of the different choices. Since an empirical formula was used in the original work it seemed desirable to use a theoretical relation for comparison if a suitable one were available.

A Problem In Atmospheric Diffusion, Albert C. Giere Jun 1958

A Problem In Atmospheric Diffusion, Albert C. Giere

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This study concerns the diffusion of atmospheric ozone through a one dimensional region, given certain initial and boundary conditions. As shown in Figure 1 the region is bounded by the planes x= -a and x=b. The plane x=0 divides the region into two parts, Region I and Region II. The solution to this type of problem consists in giving the concentration as a function of the time for any point x in both regions. A general analytic solution is obtained by means of the Laplace transformation using coefficients of diffusion which differ in Regions I and II, but which are …

The Extraction Of Scandium, Yttrium, And Lanthanum Using Various Monoalkyl Orthophosphoric Acids, Clarence Gerald Warren May 1958

The Extraction Of Scandium, Yttrium, And Lanthanum Using Various Monoalkyl Orthophosphoric Acids, Clarence Gerald Warren

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The separation of lanthanum, yttrium, and the rare earth elements from their ores has been a challenge to the chemist for many years. The similarity in chemical properties has made their separation a problem of extraordinary difficulty. Fractional crystallization has been the classical method utilized in the past, although individual elements have been isolated by oxidation or reduction to other than the tripositive oxidation state (1). Recently ion exchange and solvent extraction methods have become more important as a means of separation of these elements. Both of these techniques depend upon fractional differences in the distribution of compounds or ions …

A Rotating Ring Magnetometer Remote Position Indicator, Robert B. Foster Jr. May 1958

A Rotating Ring Magnetometer Remote Position Indicator, Robert B. Foster Jr.

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Many phases of present-day experimental physics require remote indicating devices where data must be transmitted either by wire or radio to a distant point. For example, when atmospheric parameters are measured by means of sounding balloons, it would be desirable to use a lightweight device which would accurately convert measured information into electrical data in a form which would allow easy transmission to a receiving station.

Absorption Of Antimony(Iii) And Indium From Anhydrous Acetic Acid By Ion Exchange Resins, Robert Tor Lofberg May 1958

Absorption Of Antimony(Iii) And Indium From Anhydrous Acetic Acid By Ion Exchange Resins, Robert Tor Lofberg

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Organic ion exchange resins are a comparatively recent development. In 1935 Adams and Holmes prepared the first ion exchange resin by polymerizing polyhydric phenols with formaldehyde. The condensation product exhibited definite reversible cation exchange properties. The success of this experiment led them to the development of the first anion exchange resin which was prepared by the polymerization of phenylenediamine with formaldehyde. The publication of these experiments inspired many similar investigations leading directly to the manufacture of the numerous ion exchange resins now commercially available.

Geology Of The Southern Part Of The Ortiz Mountains Santa Fe County, New Mexico, John W. Peterson May 1958

Geology Of The Southern Part Of The Ortiz Mountains Santa Fe County, New Mexico, John W. Peterson

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Ortiz Mountains lie in a belt of early Tertiary intrusive centers adjacent to the Rio Grande depression of north-central New Mexico. Tertiary organic activity and subsequent erosion have etched this mountain group into considerable relief.

Intrusive activity occurred during early Tertiary Espinaso time and resulted in emplacement of sills and dikes of a central stock. Correlation of volcanism with intrusive phases is difficult. Most volcansim probably occurred during the later part of Ortiz igneous activity. An elongate vent is exposed in the eastern part of the mountains and structurally occupies the highest position in the group.

The principle igneous …

Geology Of The Northern Part Of The Ortiz Mountains, Santa Fe County, New Mexico, Otis M. Mcrae Apr 1958

Geology Of The Northern Part Of The Ortiz Mountains, Santa Fe County, New Mexico, Otis M. Mcrae

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The northern part of the Ortiz Mountains of north-central New Mexico consists of a tilted fault block of Cretaceous Mancos shale and Mesaverde formation intruded by latite-andesite porphyry sills and laccoliths and a nepheline-bearing augite manzonite stock. Igneous activity started with the development of a volcanic vent in what is now the central part of the mountains. Volcanic debris from the vent want removed from the area by erosion and provided sedimentary material for the late [ ] Espinaso volcanics of the adjoining areas. Intrusion of the latite-andesite porphyry sills and laccolite followed extrusive igneous activity, as demonstrated by the …

Microstratigraphic And Sedimentational Studies Of An Early Man Site Near Lucy, New Mexico, Jerry Harbour Apr 1958

Microstratigraphic And Sedimentational Studies Of An Early Man Site Near Lucy, New Mexico, Jerry Harbour

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The purpose of the study has been to interpret the sedimentary record of the Lucy site deposits in order to establish a climatic sequence into which various cultural zones, especially the Sandia, may be placed, and to date this climatic sequence as accurately as possible. A second purpose has been to establish the reliability of the Pleistocene Lake Estancia shore levels as a regional floating chronology of climatic events, and to correlate the Lucy site sediments with this regional chronology. By means of the Lucy site artifacts, this chronology is partly fixed in time, so as a result of the …

Paleontology And Stratigraphy Of The Jemez Springs Area, Sandoval County, New Mexico, Bill P. Lovejoy

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Jemez Springs area of north-central New Mexico contains rocks ranging in age from Precambrian to Recent. Resting on Precambrian granite are 15 to 20 feet of Mississippian limestone and shale belonging to the Arroyo Peñasco formation of probable Meramecian age. The marine fauna is restricted to Pennsylvanian rocks. In this study. 64 species representing 40 genera were recognized, and the majority are illustrated and systematically described. Fossil evidence indicates a Lampasan (Atokan) age for the Sandia formation and a Desmoinesian, Missourian, and Virgilian age for the Madera limestone. Correlation was based primarily on the predominant and well-preserved brachiopod fauna. …
