This study was the first fatty acid analysis and biological activity report on an endemic Achillea species, Achillea cappadocica Hausskn. et Bornm. The major compounds in the fatty acid were identified as oleic (34.7 %), palmitic (23.1 %), and linoleic acids (20.6 %). The methanol and water extracts indicated higher ABTS cation radical scavenging activity than that of \alpha-tocopherol and BHT at 100 \mu g/mL. The acetone extract showed 70.62 % inhibitory activity against butyrylcholinesterase at 200 \mu g/mL. The acetone and methanol extracts exhibited moderate antimicrobial activity.

New 2-(imidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-2-ylcarbonyl)-N-substituted hydrazinecarbothioamides (4a--j), N'-(3-substituted-4-oxo-1,3-thiazolidin-2-ylidene)imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-2-carbohydrazides (5a--f), and N-(nonsubstituted/4-substituted phenyl)-5-(imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-2-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-amines (6a--d) were synthesized from imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-2-carbohydrazide (3) and evaluated for antifungal activity against Microsporum gypseum NCPF 580, M. canis, Trichophyton tonsurans NCPF 245, T. rubrum, Candida albicans ATCC 10231, and C. parapsilosis ATCC 22019 using amphotericin B as the standard. The chemical structures of the compounds were confirmed by elemental analysis, IR, ^1H NMR, ^{13}C NMR, HMBC (^{13}C, ^1H), and mass spectra. \beta-Tetrabromo-meso-tetrakis(4-methoxyphenyl)porphyrin, H_2T(4-OCH_3P)PBr_4, was synthesized and characterized by UV-Vis and ^1H NMR spectroscopy. Oxidation of alkanes and olefins with tetra-n-butylammonium peroxymonosulfate (n-Bu_4NHSO_5) was studied in the presence of MnT(4-OCH_3P)PBr_4(OAc) and MnTPPPBr_4(OAc) (TPP = meso-tetraphenylporphyrin). While significance differences were observed between the catalytic activities of the title complexes in the oxidation of alkanes, the 2 manganese porphyrins showed comparable activities in oxidation of most of the olefins used. However, the latter showed greater catalytic performance in the oxidation of the hydrocarbons. Solutions of salicyclic, ascorbic, and citric acids were reacted with boric acid, followed by NaH_2PO_4. The products, triphosphateborate ester of salicylic acid (1), orthosphateborate ester of ascorbic acid (2), triphosphateborate ester of ascorbic acid (3), and orthosphateborate ester of citric acid (4), were flash precipitated with cold acetone and characterised by microanalysis, thermal analysis, FT-IR, Raman, ^{11}B NMR, ^{31}P MAS NMR, and mass spectroscopic techniques. Three new polysubstituted isoindole-1,3-diones were prepared from 2-ethyl-5-hydroxy-3a,4,5,7a-tetrahydro-isoindole-1,3-dione. The reaction of 2-ethyl-5-hydroxy-3a,4,5,7a-tetrahydro-isoindole-1,3-dione with m-CPBA gave the corresponding epoxide. The triacetate derivative was obtained via cis-hydroxylation using OsO_4, followed by acetylation. An aromatic derivative, a secondary reaction product, was also formed during the acetylation. Finally, a tricyclic derivative from 2-ethyl-5-hydroxy-3a,4,5,7a-tetrahydro-isoindole-1,3-dione was synthesized via dichloroketene addition under microwave irradiation. The exact structures of epoxide and tricyclic derivatives were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis.

A novel [Pb_2(\mu-atrz)_2(\mu-CH_3COO)(CH_3COO)]_n (atrz = 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole) complex was synthesized and characterized by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The molecular structure shows that the complex is a coordination polymer in which there are 2 different lead(II) ions with coordination number of 5, Pb(2), and, with a coordination number of 4, Pb(1). Each atrz acts as a bridging ligand between 2 Pb(II) ions through the 2 adjacent nitrogen atoms of the triazole ring. In the presence of water and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane, several aldehydes and cyclic ketones underwent efficient Knoevenagel condensation with malononitrile and ethyl cyanoacetate to produce the respective \alpha.\beta-unsaturated systems within fairly short time periods. As a result, high yields of conjugated products were easily obtained. Products could be engaged in a Gewald reaction, either stepwise or in situ, to produce efficiently their respective 2-aminothiophenes within 4--7 h.

NHC--Pd(II) complexes bearing a chiral oxazoline ligand (IIIa--f) were synthesized by cleavage of dimeric palladium complexes with the oxazoline ligand. They were fully characterized by ^1H and ^{13}C NMR and elemental analyses. The catalytic activity of the complexes (IIIa--f) in allylic alkylation reactions was evaluated. The complex IIIa was found to be the most active catalyst. Very low ee values indicate that the oxazoline is dissociated from the active catalytic species.

The charge and size of molecules chemically attached to nanoparticles (NPs) play an important role in their interaction behavior in suspensions. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were modified systematically with peptides and the modification was verified with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The behavior of the modified AuNPs in suspension and at the liquid--solid interface was monitored using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), UV/Vis spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering (DLS) in suspension, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) at the solid--liquid interface. The effects of propargyl alcohol (PA), propynol ethoxylate (PME), propargyl sulfonate (PS), and diethylaminopropyne (DEP) compounds as additives in a Watts bath on coating brightness, thickness, and efficiency were investigated and compared using electrochemical methods such as linear and square wave voltammetry (SWV), chronoamperometry, chronopotentiometry, electrochemical impedance (EIS), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy. A new capillary electrophoresis method was developed for the simultaneous determination of dexpanthenol (DEX), lidocaine (LID), and mepyramine (MEP) in pharmaceutical preparations. The best results were obtained using 20 mM (pH 3.0) phosphate buffer as the background electrolyte. Separation was obtained using a fused-silica capillary (75 \mu m internal diameter, 50 cm total length, 41 cm effective length) and a potential of +30 kV at 20 °C. A novel green approach for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles using erythromycin as a reducing/capping agent is presented. Erythromycin-derived silver nanoparticles were characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Monodispersed silver nanoparticles showed excellent and promising catalytic activity for reduction of 3 differently charged dyes (eosin B, methylene blue, and rose bengal) in the presence of NaBH_4. The effects of ionic strength and temperature on the dissociation constants of adefovir (PMEA) and cidofovir (HPMPC) used as antiviral drugs were studied at 298 K, 308 K, and 318 K in aqueous media and at different ionic strength backgrounds of NaCl potentiometrically. The dissociation constants of the ligands were determined via the calculation of the titration data with the SUPERQUAD computer program. The thermodynamic parameters (\Delta G, \Delta H, and \Delta S) for all species were calculated. A saccharide-assisted hydrothermal route starting from a single iron precursor was employed to study the influence of reducing saccharides on the formation of iron oxide (Fe_3O_4) nanoparticles (NPs). Fe_3O_4 NPs, which were confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis, were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method in which mannose, maltose, lactose, and galactose served as reducing agents. Two novel clusters of cephalosporin based on calixarene were synthesized directly or by ring expansion of the penicillin arms of calixpenams to the corresponding cephem arms via sulfoxide intermediates. Antibiotic tests showed that calixcephems have a noteworthy increase in antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) with respect to parent calixpenams and their corresponding single cephems.

Rosmarinic acid is a water-soluble ester of caffeic acid and 3,4-dihydroxyphenyllactic acids, and is mainly found in plant species including Boraginaceae and Lamiaceae. In this research, we determined the inhibition property of rosmarinic acid on carbonic anhydrase isoenzymes I and II (hCA I and II) purified from human erythrocytes by using Sepharose-4B affinity column chromatography. hCA I and II isoenzymes were obtained with a yield of 57.9% and 67.2% and 76.5- and 509.3-fold purification of each isoenzyme, respectively. This article is a state of the art review of the reported complexes and of their synthetic methods. Beyond classical chemistry characterization tools, specific methods appropriate to their structure are used and are presented in detail. Porphyrins are an important family of organic chromophores that have attracted attention as photosensitizers in TiO_2-based dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). This brief review is dedicated to comparative studies of phosphonic and carboxylic acid anchoring groups for attachment of porphyrin sensitizers on semiconductors or conductors surface. Here we have selected some representative examples of recently described phosphonate/carboxylate porphyrins with the aim to demonstrate that porphyrin phosphonate should be a promising anchoring group for such systems.

In this communication, encapsulation studies between metallosupramolecular capsule 1, formed by 2 subphthalocyanines (SubPcs) coordinated to 3 metallic centers, and phthalocyanine (Pc)-C_{60} fullerene conjugates 2--5 have been carried out. It was shown that the encapsulation of the C_{60} moiety by the SubPc cage occurred exclusively for dyads 2--4, whereas it was not observed in the case of triad 5. The rigidity of the linker between the Pc and the fullerene unit proved to have an important impact in the complex formation. Nature Of Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Response In Phthalocyanine Derivatives: A Density Functional Theory Study, Chiming Wang, Chao Chen, Qingqi Zhang, Dongdong Qi, Jianzhuang Jiang

Density functional theory was employed to investigate a series of phthalocyanine derivatives, discovering the limitation when the expansion of the conjugated system was employed to improve the hyper-Rayleigh scattering response coefficient. Furthermore, an unusually C_{\infty v}-type octupolar population was found by electrostatic potential analysis. In addition, the dynamic and static hyper-Rayleigh scattering responses (\beta_{HRS}) were simulated using the coupled perturbed density functional theory, showing an increasing dynamic \beta_{HRS} value along with an increase in incident light energy.

The synthesis of novel, symmetrical, tetrasubstituted manganese phthalocyanine complexes bearing 4 hexylthio, 2',3',4',5',6'-pentafluorobenzyloxy, 2',3',5',6'-tetrafluoro-4'-hexylthio-benzyloxy, and 2',3',5',6'-tetrafluoro-4'-pentoxy-benzyloxy units is reported. The new compounds have been characterized by using elemental analyses and UV-Vis, FT-IR, and mass spectroscopic data. The electrochemical properties of the manganese phthalocyanine complexes were investigated by cyclic and square wave voltammetry and the nature of the observed redox processes was studied by spectroelectrochemistry.

New polymeric phthalocyanine moieties (M = 2H, Zn, Ni, Cu, and Co) were synthesized via polytetracyclomerization reaction of o-bis[3-(3,4-dicyanophenoxy)propyloxy]benzene (3), which can be obtained by the reaction of 4-nitrophthalonitrile with o-bis[(3-hydroxypropyl)oxy]benzene. Aggregation and disaggregation behavior of the polymeric phthalocyanine (5) was studied with some alkali and earth alkali metal cations. Measured intrinsic viscosities of the polymeric phthalocyanines exhibited a substantial decreasing tendency with dilution of the solution. Thermogravimetric analysis was performed under air by using DSC and DTG/TGA techniques and indicated that these polymers have good thermal stability. In this study, new cobalt phthalocyanine containing a 2-(2-benzothiazolylthio)ethoxy group at peripheral positions has been synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic methods (IR, UV-Vis elemental analysis, and mass spectroscopies). Catalytic activity of Co(II) phthalocyanine has been investigated in the presence of oxidants such as tert-buthylhydroperoxide, m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid, and H_2O_2. Co(II) phthalocyanine shows catalytically activity and product conversion under mild conditions. To find the optimal conditions in the oxidation process, substrate ratio, oxidant ratio, temperature, and oxidant type were examined over 3 h. The results exhibit the best optimum reaction conditions in this catalytic system.

The synthesis of tetraaminopropylamid substituted phthalocyanines was targeted to prepare enhanced soluble phthalocyanines in common solvents from hydrophobic to hydrophilic that bore nonionic groups on their periphery. Metal-free (H_2Pc) and metallophthalocyanines (Zn(II) (ZnPc), Cu(II) (CuPc) and Co(II) (CoPc)) were prepared and characterized by UV-Vis, FT-IR, and mass spectroscopies. The ^1H NMR spectra were recorded for the diamagnetic phthalocyanine species H_2Pc and ZnPc. The phthalocyanines showed sufficient solubility in common organic solvents such as dimethyl sulfoxide, tetrahydrofuran, and ethanol. However, methanol was not a good solvent for CuPc and H_2Pc. The synthesis, characterization, and spectroscopic properties of novel nonperipherally tetrasubstituted metallophthalocyanines (zinc, cobalt, copper, manganese, and indium) bearing 4 (7-(trifluoromethyl)quinolin-4-yl)oxy units has been reported. The new compounds have been characterized using UV-Vis, IR, ^1H NMR, ^{13}C NMR, ^{19}F NMR, and mass spectroscopic data. The absorption properties of these new complexes were compared to those of peripherally substituted phthalocyanine derivatives. Based on the structural, spectroscopic, and absorption studies, it was found that the substitution effect altered the electronic structures significantly. Novel water-soluble metallophthalocyanines (M: Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) containing azo dye were characterized. The structures were confirmed by IR, UV/vis, ^1H NMR, ^{13}C NMR, mass spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Photochemical properties and aggregation behavior of zinc phthalocyanines were investigated. Singlet oxygen quantum yields of the zinc phthalocyanines (2d, 3d, 5d, and 6d) were 0.8, 0.57, 0.71, and 0.46, respectively.
