Graph Games is a suite of online casual games that make use of human computation to help solve several NP-complete graph problems. These problems are very difficult for computers to solve efficiently because they rapidly become computationally infeasible as their size increases. However, humans possess intelligent decision-making abilities that computers do not, so they can solve these problems more resourcefully than computers.
Graph Games seeks to harness these abilities to increase the body of knowledge about solving NP-complete problem by presenting problems in the form of puzzle-like games. Graph Games currently consists of three families of games, each being comprised …

In response to a problem posed by faculty at the Applied Physics Institute at Western Kentucky University, the speaker has developed an algorithm for providing an automated analysis of spectrum data for the purpose of determining the elemental composition of the item generating the data. A full, non-provisional patent application has been filed on the idea, and a full marketing campaign has started to license software implementing the algorithm. This presentation will give a brief explanation of the mathematics in use in the algorithm, and will give some examples of the software in action.

Surface Geometry And Heat Flux Effect On Thin Wire Nucleate Pool Boiling Of Subcooled Water In Microgravity, Troy Munro, Andrew Fassman

The motivation of this nucleate boiling research is to understand the effects of surface geometry and heat flux as applied to a thin wire heater. This will further the understanding of the fundamental behaviors of boiling onset, steady state heat transfer, and bubble dynamics with respect to nucleate boiling with the goal of creating efficient thermal management systems for future space applications. Using three different thin platinum wire geometries and five different power levels, subcooled water was boiled over a period of approximately 30 seconds for 15 parabolic arcs to simulate microgravity. One of the main characters of the story is a mathematical genius, and has realized the power and limitations of iterations in generating mathematical models and structures, although she is living in the early 1800's. It has been shown that the metabolic rates of deep-living species of particular pelagic groups are significantly lower than those that live closer to the surface in the water column. Various theories as to why have been presented, including the visual interactions hypothesis, which states that because there is a greatly minimized ability to visually interact in the light-limited deep, predators have a reduced need for high metabolic rates because they do not actively go after their prey. For my Senior Honors Project I participated in the Climate Change Collaborative, which is a new interdisciplinary research project studying the ways in which coastal communities in Rhode Island can better adapt to the environmental, cultural and economic consequences of climate change. At the previous Approximation Theory XII meeting, I discussed some preliminary work with the Applied Physics Institute at Western Kentucky University in using multiwavelets to provide an objective analysis of gamma-ray spectrum generated from fast neutron bombardment of objects, for the purpose of identifying the elemental composition of the object. The method discussed at the time worked moderately well with the limited amount of data provided, but subsequent use with data sets of different compounds and with different detectors brought to light serious flaws with its implementation.

Social network analysis focuses on finding patterns in interactions between people or entities. These patterns may be described in the form of a network. Network analysis in general has many applications including models of student integration and persistence, business to business supply chains, terrorist cells, or analysis of social media such as Facebook and Twitter. The aim of this project was to investigate the photochemistry of three new Ruthenium (II) complexes as possible therapeutics and their associated ligands. The objectives were to use the following spectroscopic techniques: Absorption, Emission and Raman spectroscopy. The formation of a C-C bond via double C-H bond activation is very challenging. There are only a few examples of such a coupling having been accomplished. Only one of these examples consists of a coupling of two sp3 hybridized carbons. I set out to reproduce this coupling, using substrates that would have a functional application to the synthesis of appealing molecules such as bioactive molecules. Cyclohexane and trimethylamine N-oxide were successfully coupled via a double C-H bond activation, catalyzed by copper(II). Current research now involves the coupling of toluene with trimethylamine N-oxide. As this work progresses, more interesting and …

The aim of this study is to synthesise and characterise new ligands based on a 1,10-Phenanthroline-5,6-dione backbone and their respective Ru(II) complexes; Ru(bpy)2mfmp, Ru(bpy)2fmp and Ru(bpy)2NO2-mp as shown in figure 1.The synthesis of the ligands will be discussed and a variety of Ru(II) complexes. A brief insight of the electronic and NMR spectroscopy will be presented along with preliminary photochemical results such as extinction coefficients, quantum yields and luminescence lifetimes. The Great Salt Lake of Utah is surrounded on its eastern and southern shores by 1.4 million people, with projections of 5 million by 2050. Agricultural, industrial and particularly secondary-treated domestic wastes from this population flow primarily into Farmington Bay, a 280 km2 shallow "estuary" with a mean depth near 0.5 m. Fish are rare but bird use is extensive and massive mortalities of waterfowl and shorebirds have occurred in the bay. Phosphorus loading rates of >2 g m-2yr-1 cause hypereutrophic conditions: Secchi depths are usually 0.6 mg/L, mean Chl. a is 179 ug/L and the combined trophic state index …

“Mathematics knows no races or geographic boundaries; for mathematics, the cultural world is one country.” – David Hilbert Differential equations are equations of one or more variables that involve both functions and their derivatives. These equations have many applications to the everyday “non-math” world, including modeling in engineering, physics, biology, chemistry, and economics. Differential equations are used when a situation arises where one needs to study a continuously changing quantity (expressed as a function) and its rate of change (expressed through its derivatives). The solutions to differential equations are functions that make the original equation hold true, and they can …
