Graph Games is a collection of games with the purpose of gathering data from player solutions for solving graph-related problems that are difficult for computers to solve efficiently. The data will be used to solve instances of and improve algorithms for various problems on graphs. We made several important improvements to the Graph Games software. Now every move made by the player, including the timing between moves, is stored. The replay system was also improved so that player solutions can be replayed move by move, in real time, or sped up or slowed down. So that players can more easily …

Given a simple, connected graph, a pebbling configuration is a function from its vertex set to the nonnegative integers. A pebbling move between adjacent vertices removes two pebbles from one vertex and adds one pebble to the other. A vertex r is said to be reachable under a configuration if there exists a sequence of pebbling moves that places one pebble on r. A configuration is solvable if every vertex is reachable. We prove tight bounds on the number of vertices with two and three pebbles that can exist in an unsolvable configuration on a diameter two graph in terms …

This presentation will cover how a typical introductory physics course has been transformed into one that is self-paced and proficiency graded. The changes were made so that each student would be challenged at his/her level and therefore be more engaged in the course. This structure allows the teacher to individualize instruction of the students. The presentation will also cover adjustments that were made to this model based on student feedback and experiences. The model used to make this course self-paced and proficiency graded should be transferable to other courses.

Modern physics is an excellent way to get students interested in physics – the “weirdness” of relativity and quantum mechanics captures the imagination. This presentation discusses how to teach the subject in a way that encourages this interest. This year’s session will focus on teaching quantum mechanics in a way that is interesting to students and avoids common misconceptions.

Incorporation of mobile technology into the post-secondary classroom is becoming increasingly common as universities seek to facilitate active, student-centered learning through rapid access to information, connect students with course content through social media, and evaluate digital alternatives to conventional instructor-student interaction. The m-Learning Scholars Program at Boise State University was initiated during the 2010 – 2011 academic year, and provides a venue for exploring the potential of mobile technology to enhance student learning in the geosciences. Through this program, 38 students in an introductory Earth History course for non-geoscience majors each purchased a subsidized handheld device (iPod touch) that they …

This presentation was part of a staff workshop focused on empirical methods and applied research. This includes a basic overview of regression with matrix algebra, maximum likelihood, inference, and model assumptions. Distinctions are made between paradigms related to classical statistical methods and algorithmic approaches. The presentation concludes with a brief discussion of generalization error, data partitioning, decision trees, and neural networks.

The Pt2 (1,0) Band Of System Vi In The Near Infrared By Intracavity Laser Absorption Spectroscopy, Leah O'Brien, James O'Brien
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works
Intracavity laser absorption spectroscopy has been used to record rotationally resolved electronic spectra of Pt2 in the near infrared. The metal dimers were created using a 50 mm-long, platinum-lined hollow cathode plasma discharge. The observed transition at 12 937 cm−1 is identified as the (1,0) band of System VI, with state symmetries Ω = 0 – X Ω = 0.

During Spring 2009, Dr. Kessler created and published a comic book series that embedded math content into the story for 4th-6th grade students. The comics were well received in the classrooms at Cumberland Trace Elementary. Dr. Kessler contends that this approach to teaching and learning can be used in any content area, and is useful for engaging students who might not be as interested otherwise. This session will explore ways of utilizing the skills of your students to construct learning comics in your classes, regardless of the funds, technology, and artistic experience at your disposal. The goal of the present work is to observe x-rays from oxygen for the purpose of investigating resonant-transfer and excitation (RTE) [1], and projectile and target x-ray emission resulting from inner-shell capture. Projectile energies in the range 5-25 MeV will be examined to investigate RTE for heavy targets [2,3].
