Exploring The Role Of A Mushy, Crustal Compliant Region In Volcano Deformation, Grant A. Block Jul 2026

Exploring The Role Of A Mushy, Crustal Compliant Region In Volcano Deformation, Grant A. Block

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Volcanoes are both creative and destructive forces that have shaped and continue to shape our world from early geologic time to the present day. Continued study of volcanic processes not only better prepares us for monitoring volcanic hazards but also allows us to better understand processes fundamental to Earth as we know it, such as the generation of the atmosphere and accretion of the continents. This dissertation focuses on an integral part of volcanic processes: the trans-crustal magmatic transport system. Specifically, we investigate regions of these transport systems where magma pools in melt-rich lenses within broader regions of low melt-fraction, …

Superresolution Spectroscopy Of Atomically Thin Semiconductors And Moiré Heterostructures, Chien-Chu (Charity) Wei Jul 2026

Superresolution Spectroscopy Of Atomically Thin Semiconductors And Moiré Heterostructures, Chien-Chu (Charity) Wei

Master's Theses

Atomically thin semiconductors and moir’e heterostructures provide an important platform for studying quantum phenomena shaped by reduced dimensionality, interlayer coupling, strain, and local structure. In MoS2, the transition from bulk to monolayer form changes the material from an indirect to a direct band gap, while stacked and strain-engineered systems can produce spatially varying moir’e potentials on nanometer length scales. Because these effects are highly localized, conventional far-field optical spectroscopy is often limited in its ability to resolve them directly. This thesis explores superresolution vibrational spectroscopy as a route toward probing local behavior in atomically thin semiconductors and moir’e heterostructures. Far-field …

Diagrammatic Methods For Calculating Correlation Functions In Low-Dimensional Quantum Gravity, Nicholas A. Parrilla Jul 2026

Diagrammatic Methods For Calculating Correlation Functions In Low-Dimensional Quantum Gravity, Nicholas A. Parrilla

Master's Theses

This thesis investigates connections between random matrix theory and low-dimensional quantum gravity through the spectral form factor (SFF), a well-studied function that characterizes correlations in the eigenvalue spectrum of an operator. In random matrix ensembles, a feature of the SFF known as the “ramp” is governed by universal spectral correlations, and in Jackiw–Teitelboim (JT) gravity this regime is due to the double-trumpet wormhole geometry. We study the connected correlation functions underlying the SFF using combinatorial, diagrammatic methods from a mathematical formalism known as second-order free probability theory, where they are expressed in terms of annular noncrossing permutations. Simulations Of Skyrmions And Merons, Ryan Friesen, Aidan Kirk, Tom Carroll, Xuemei Cheng Jul 2026

Simulations Of Skyrmions And Merons, Ryan Friesen, Aidan Kirk, Tom Carroll, Xuemei Cheng

Physics and Astronomy Summer Fellows

Skyrmions and merons are particle-like spin structures that are found in specific magnetic materials. Due to their stability and nanoscale size, these quasiparticles have been proposed as promising candidates for qubits in quantum computing applications. Our goal is to design materials that can host and stabilize these quasiparticles. Skyrmions and merons exist only under specific conditions, and the parameter space for these materials is vast. Thus, we use the simulation package MuMax3 to run simulations to test the viability of potential materials to simplify this search. We present on our simulations of these skyrmions and merons. This work was supported …

Glassy Magnetic Freezing Of Interacting Clusters In Materials Related To The Lk-99 Family, Serafim Teknowijoyo, Domenico Napoletani, Vahan Nikoghosyan, Armen Gulian

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We report reproducible magnetization anomalies appearing below room temperature in copper-doped apatite materials belonging to the LK-99 family synthesized via hydrothermal methods. These anomalies are observed consistently across samples prepared under comparable conditions. Although the extracted Mydosh parameter lies within the range often associated with vortex-glass behavior in superconductors, a detailed analysis of DC magnetization, AC susceptibility, field dependence, and magnetic memory effects demonstrates that the observed phenomena are not related to superconductivity. Instead, the data are consistent with glassy magnetic freezing of interacting clusters. Compositional and structural analysis identifies covellite (CuS), one of the constituent phases in these multiphase …

Publications

The inner surface pressure of an axisymmetric inlet/isolator model was measured using anodized-aluminum pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) viewing through cast acrylic. Temperaturesensitive paint was utilized to correct for the PSP’s temperature sensitivity. The model was tested under Mach 5.7 flow at 𝑹𝒆 = 7.1 ×106 /m under conventional noise conditions. Transverse jet injection with jet-to-inlet mass-flow ratios up to 0.8 was used to induce unstart in the inlet/isolator. Background-oriented schlieren visualization of the inlet shocks was collected simultaneously with the PSP to determine when the inlet unstarted. Computational fluid dynamics results were used to determine off-wall flow structures and quantify approach …

Cancer is characterized by dysregulated metabolic signaling pathways, leading to uncontrolled cellular proliferation. Current cancer treatments, which involve surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, still cause adverse systemic toxicities. Accordingly, one possible effort that can be undertaken is to explore safe anticancer substances from protein sources such as peptides. Bioactive peptides can be isolated by hydrolyzing cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp) protein with trypsin. The objectives of this study were to isolate and fractionate bioactive peptides from cowpea, to determine the anticancer activity of peptide fractions, to identify active peptide fractions as anticancer agents using Liquid Chromatography High Resolution Mass Spectrometry …

Exogenous Ribosome Incorporation Induces Lineage Transdifferentiation In Intestinal And Liver Cancer Cells, Haoxuan Gu, Nadia Wahyuningsih, Keisuke Yamashita, Shota Inoue, Fuchao Tan, Mani Sharaki, Muhaimin Rifa’I, Kunimasa Ohta

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

It has previously been shown that exogenous bacterial ribosomes added to somatic cells and various cancer cell lines generate ribosome-induced cell clusters (RICs) capable of transdifferentiating into multiple cellular lineages. However, the scope of ribosome-induced transdifferentiation in cancer cells remains poorly understood. This study aimed to analyze the effects of exogenous ribosome incorporation on human cancer cell lines, specifically the intestinal epithelial cell line Caco-2 and the hepatocellular carcinoma cell line HepG2. Caco-2 and HepG2 cells were cultured with purified bacterial ribosomes in human ES/iPS cell medium after trypsinization, resulting in the formation of ribosome-induced Caco-2 (RICs-Ca) and HepG2 (RICs-He) …

Indonesia is an archipelagic country surrounded by water and faces energy challenges due to the low use of renewable energy. Among the potential renewable options, marine energy is a particularly suitable resource given the country’s geographical nature. Based on this discussion, seawater temperature can be used as an alternative ocean thermal en-ergy known as ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) by using the difference in sea surface and deep-sea water temperatures. Therefore, this study aimed to examine OTEC installations in North Bali waters using closed-cycle OTEC calculations for a 5 MW system. Following this objective, we examined the water conditions by …

Crystal Structural Analysis Of Medieval Human Bones Using Wide-Angle X-Ray Scattering, Selly Altangerel, Leslie Gracia

DePaul Discoveries

Female human second metacarpal (mc2) bones from a medieval cemetery at Wharram Percy, England, were studied using high-energy Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS) at beamline 1-ID of the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory. The age-at-death of 33 samples was determined from molar wear and classified into 3 groups:  18-30, 30-50, and 50+ years old.  Rietveld refinements of the WAXS data were performed to obtain lattice parameters of the hexagonal carbonated apatite phase (cAp). Individual fittings for cAp peaks 00.2, 00.4, and 31.0 were performed to obtain their widths and correlate them to collagen retention. For the three samples described …

Capturing An Electron In The Virtual State, Alok Nath Singh, Bibek Bhandari, Rafael Sánchez, Andrew N. Jordan Jul 2026

Capturing An Electron In The Virtual State, Alok Nath Singh, Bibek Bhandari, Rafael Sánchez, Andrew N. Jordan

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We address a foundational question in quantum mechanics: can a particle be directly found in a classically-forbidden virtual state? We instantiate this conceptual question by investigating the traversal of electrons through a tunnel barrier, which we define in a triple quantum dot system where the occupation of the central dot is energetically avoided. The motivation behind this setup is to answer whether the central dot is occupied or not during a virtual transition when it is being explicitly monitored. We investigate this problem in two different limits of continuous measurements: the stochastic quantum diffusion and the quantum jump. We find …

Rotating nonaxisymmetric neutron stars (NSs) are promising sources for continuous gravitational waves (CWs). CWs may, if detected, inform us about the internal structure and equation of state of NSs. Here, we present a narrowband search for CWs from known pulsars, for which a matched-filter search can be applied. Narrowband searches are robust to mismatches between electromagnetic (EM) and gravitational emissions, in contrast to fully targeted searches where they are assumed to be phase-locked. In this work, we search for the CW counterparts emitted by 34 pulsars using data from the first and second parts of the fourth LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA observing run. …

Gwtc-4.0: Population Properties Of Merging Compact Binaries, A. G. Abac, I. Abouelfettouh, Teviet Creighton, Mario C. Diaz, Raul Alberto Espinosa Perez, J Lawrence, Francisco Llamas Villarreal, Soma Mukherjee, Volker Quetschke, Wenhui Wang Jul 2026

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We detail the population properties of binary neutron star, neutron star–black hole binary, and binary black hole mergers using 158 events from the cumulative Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog 4.0. The black hole primary mass distribution consists of a power-law-like continuum that steepens above 35 M⊙ with overdensities at 10 M⊙ and 35 M⊙. Binary black holes with primary masses near 10 M⊙ are more likely to have less massive secondaries, with a mass ratio distribution peaking at  q=0.74+0.13−0.13, potentially a signature of stable mass transfer during binary evolution. Black hole spins are inferred to be nonextremal, with …

Detecting And Correcting Systematic Image Distortion In Digital Atomic-Resolution Images From Crystals: Projected Symmetry Of Graphite Calibration Samples For Scanning Prove Microscopy And Subperiodic Crystals For Aberration-Corrected Transmission Electron Microscopy, Tyler Michael Bortel Jul 2026

Detecting And Correcting Systematic Image Distortion In Digital Atomic-Resolution Images From Crystals: Projected Symmetry Of Graphite Calibration Samples For Scanning Prove Microscopy And Subperiodic Crystals For Aberration-Corrected Transmission Electron Microscopy, Tyler Michael Bortel

Dissertations and Theses

Though it is an impressive technology, Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) produces images commonly plagued by small systematic errors, often called "drift". These effects have a variety of causes, most notably nonlinear behavior of piezoelectric actuator tubes responsible for the positioning of the scanning probe or sample. One result of these distortions is a potential incorrect classification of the symmetry groups and projected Laue classes of recorded images from crystals—made possible by using recently developed objective methods. An implementation of a known method for detecting and correcting these errors is presented. This method operates strictly in Fourier space so as to …

Coherent Two-Photon Backscattering And Induced Angular Quantum Correlations In Multiple-Scattered Two-Photon States Of The Light, Nooshin M. Estakhri, Theodore B. Norris Jul 2026

Coherent Two-Photon Backscattering And Induced Angular Quantum Correlations In Multiple-Scattered Two-Photon States Of The Light, Nooshin M. Estakhri, Theodore B. Norris

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

We present the emergence of coherent two-photon backscattering, a manifestation of weak localization, in multiple scattering of maximally entangled pure and fully mixed two-photon states and examine the effect of entanglement and classical correlations. Quantum correlations in backscattering are investigated for finite three-dimensional disordered structures in the weak localization regime, as well as systems of a small number of scatterers with specified spatial arrangements. No assumptions are made about the statistical behavior of the scattering matrix elements. Furthermore, we study the interplay between quantum correlations induced by multiple scattering and the correlations that may be present in the illumination fields, …

Among known neutron stars, the Vela pulsar is one of the best targets for gravitational-wave searches. It is also one of the most prolific in terms of glitches, which are sudden frequency changes in a pulsar’s rotation. Such glitches could cause a variety of transient gravitational-wave signals. Here, we search for signals associated with a Vela glitch on 2024 April 29 in data of the two LIGO detectors from the fourth LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA observing run. We search both for seconds-scale burst-like emission, primarily from fundamental (f-)mode oscillations, and for longer quasi-monochromatic transients up to 4 months in duration, primarily …

Interfacial Redox Mediation By Amine/Alkyne-Functionalized Silicon Nanoparticles: Surfactant-Free Gold Nanoparticle Synthesis, Amber L. Garcia, Brittany Griggs, Brian S. Mitchell, Mark J. Fink, Julie P. Vanegas

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We develop a surfactant-free synthesis method for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using 2-propynylamine-functionalized silicon nanoparticles as integrated redox-active supports. Surface-anchored amine groups act as built-in reducing sites for Au3+ precursors at the hexane–water interface under ambient conditions, enabling in situ AuNP nucleation and growth. Time-resolved UV-vis spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering track the emergence of plasmonic AuNPs, while quantitative morphology analysis reveals a final population dominated by spherical and near-spherical nanoparticles (∼74%), with faceted polyhedral structures (∼4%) and dendritic, hollow, irregular, and rod-like morphologies (∼22%) as minority species. The temporal evolution proceeds from early dendritic and irregular aggregates to a …

On The True Interstellar Anisotropy Of Tev Cosmic Rays And Its Implications For The Local Interstellar Medium, Noufel D. Maalal Jul 2026

On The True Interstellar Anisotropy Of Tev Cosmic Rays And Its Implications For The Local Interstellar Medium, Noufel D. Maalal

Theses and Dissertations

Several ground-based cosmic ray (CR) air shower experiments have produced sky maps of intensity anisotropy in the energy range from 1 TeV to a few hundred TeVs with very high statistics and angular resolution. These measurements provide opportunities to study CR sources and propagation in the interstellar medium (ISM). Such studies present two major difficulties. Firstly, CRs are deflected by the heliospheric magnetic field on the last stretch of their journey to Earth. Secondly, measurements at different latitudes are difficult to compare, leading to uncertainties in latitudinal variations on the order of the observed anisotropy. Experiments usually assume latitudinal variations …

Monte Carlo Analysis Of Dose Distribution In Tumour And Adjacent Healthy Tissues During 192Ir Hdr Brachytherapy In The Presence Of Gold Nanoparticles, Damian P. Tippe, Innocent J. Lugendo Jun 2026

Monte Carlo Analysis Of Dose Distribution In Tumour And Adjacent Healthy Tissues During 192Ir Hdr Brachytherapy In The Presence Of Gold Nanoparticles, Damian P. Tippe, Innocent J. Lugendo

Tanzania Journal of Science

High dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy using 192Ir is an effective modality for cancer treatment; however, its therapeutic efficiency is often constrained by unintended radiation exposure to healthy tissues surrounding the tumour. Fortunately, the incorporation of high atomic number (Z) nanoparticles as radiosensitizers has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance tumour dose while sparing adjacent normal tissues. In this study, the dose distribution in tumour and nearby healthy tissues during 192Ir HDR brachytherapy was investigated in the presence of gold (Au) nanoparticles using Monte Carlo simulations based on the Geant4 toolkit. Radial dose distributions and anisotropy characteristics were analysed …

The Role Of Zinc Precursor Concentration In Modulating The Structural, Optical, And Electrical Properties Of Sol-Gel Derived Czts Thin Films, Justine John Tibaijuka

Tanzania Journal of Science

This study reports on CZTS thin films fabricated by sol–gel spin coating using zinc acetate dihydrate, copper acetate dihydrate, tin chloride, and thiourea dissolved in methanol with monoethylamine as a stabilizer. The films were annealed rapidly at 540 °C by using an RTP furnace. Results show the significant influence of zinc concentration on films’ properties with band gap evolution between 1.46 and 1.7 eV, along with high absorption coefficients exceeding 10⁴ cm⁻¹ in the visible range. Structurally, the films evolved from poorly crystalline at low Zn content to well- crystallized, (112)-oriented kesterite near stoichiometry. However, excessive Zn caused slight degradation …

Natural Radioactivity And Radiological Hazards In Sediments From The Lindi Coast, Indian Ocean, Tanzania, Viator Mujuni, Innocent J. Lugendo

Tanzania Journal of Science

The Lindi coast of the Indian Ocean, located in southeastern Tanzania, supports rich biodiversity and has recently experienced rapid growth in socio-economic activities such as fishing, mining, and oil and gas exploration. These activities may enhance levels of natural radioactivity in coastal sediments, potentially increasing radiation exposure to local populations. Therefore, monitoring radioactivity levels and estimating associated radiation doses in this region is important. In this study, thirty-six sediment samples were collected from twelve locations along the Lindi coast and analysed for naturally occurring radionuclides using high-purity germanium (HPGe) gamma-ray spectrometry. The activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and …

Modelling Of Dust Devil Flow Dynamics: Effects Of The Sharpness Parameter On Velocity And Pressure, Deepanshu Kumar, Hossein Jafari Jun 2026

Modelling Of Dust Devil Flow Dynamics: Effects Of The Sharpness Parameter On Velocity And Pressure, Deepanshu Kumar, Hossein Jafari

Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Simulation with Applications

This work discusses the development of a straightforward model of dust devils, demonstrating a method for estimating wind speed and pressure. The current model incorporates momentum equations and the mass conservation equation for steady, axisymmetric, inviscid, and incompressible flow. In this model, the radial velocity is first considered, which is restricted in both the radial and axial directions. The sharpness parameter is also incorporated into the radial velocity formulation, as described by Vatistas model. Using the radial velocity as a foundation, we derive the azimuthal and axial velocities. The study further evaluates the pressure. Notably, for large values of the …

Numerical Method For Strongly Variable-Density Flows At Low Mach Number: Flame-Sheet Regularisation And A Mass-Flux Immersed Boundary Method, Matheus P. Severino, Fernando F. Fachini, Elmer M. Gennaro, Daniel Rodríguez, Leandro F. Souza Jun 2026

Numerical Method For Strongly Variable-Density Flows At Low Mach Number: Flame-Sheet Regularisation And A Mass-Flux Immersed Boundary Method, Matheus P. Severino, Fernando F. Fachini, Elmer M. Gennaro, Daniel Rodríguez, Leandro F. Souza

Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Simulation with Applications

A low-Mach-number flow, in the laminar regime, has intrinsically two characteristic spatial scales for a given time scale, or two characteristic temporal scales for a given spatial scale, and these dual scales are very different due to the disparity between the flow and acoustic speed. Therefore, low-Mach-number flows impose mathematical and computational challenges in their description. Standard numerical methods for compressible flows, which are typically designed for problems with a single dominant spatial and temporal scale, require alternative approaches, such as preconditioning techniques or solvers tailored for low-Mach-number equations. The present work introduces a simplified fluid dynamics model for flows …

Binding Energy Of Muonic Beryllium: Perturbative Versus All-Order Calculations, Shikha Rathi, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Paul Indelicato, Ben Ohayon

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We compute the ground-state binding energy of muonic (Formula presented) (Formula presented) Be in two ways: first, the fully perturbative treatment of the nuclear-size effect often employed in light systems, and second, an approach that accounts for the finite-nuclear-size to all orders (and is inspired by calculations otherwise employed for heavy muonic ions). The results are compared term by term and show that both approaches agree to better than one part-per-million of the total energy. The objective of this work is twofold. The first is practical: to provide a parameterization that allows the extraction of the (Formula presented) (Formula presented) …
