Implementation of supplemental protein strategies during late gestation has been shown to positively affect postweaning progeny performance. A 2-yr study was conducted to evaluate the effects of late gestation supplementation strategies on reproduction, cow body weight, and calf performance in March-calving mature range cows grazing dormant upland range. Supplementation was individually fed and provided daily with treatments being: 1) no supplementation, 2) 2 lb per day of a 30% CP distillers-based supplement, 3) 2 lb per day of a 30% CP distillers-based supplement with the inclusion of 160 mg/cow daily of monensin, 4) 2 lb per day of a 30% …

Performance of young March-Calving range cows receiving a protein supplement with the addition of either monensin or propionate salt were compared to evaluate the effect of feed additive on overall production in the postpartum stage. cow body weight and body condition were not impacted by postpartum supplementation throughout the study. Calf body weights were not impacted by type of feed additive at birth, weaning, or 205-d. Twenty-four-hour milk production was not impacted by the type of feed additive. Conception rates for cows receiving postpartum supplementation containing propionate salt were greater than cows receiving monsensin. This implies that the addition of …

A retrospective study was done utilizing 1,434 March- and May- calving Red Angus x Simmental crossbred cows and heifers from 2005 through 2019. Heifer weight as a percentage of mature body weight at breeding was used to conduct a regression analysis from 50 to 70% of mature body weight to determine the impact of body weight at breeding on reproductive performance. Heifer pregnancy rates and second pregnancy rates as 2-year-olds were greater for heifers at 60, 65, and 70% of mature body weight at breeding than heifers at 50 and 55%. In a 2-yr study, data were collected on 118 crossbred cow-calf pairs from March and May-calving herds. On approximately 30, 60, 90, 120, and 210 d postpartum, individual cow 24-h bilk yield was estimated through weigh-suckle weigh techniques. Cow body weight (BW) and body condition score (BCS) were collected weekly through breeding. Calf BW was recorded at each milking. Individual cow milk area under the curve (AUC) values were calculated and data were analyzed using linear regression analysis. Understanding pathogen emergence in new host species is fundamental for developing prevention and response plans for human and animal health. We leveraged a large-scale surveillance dataset coordinated by United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and State Natural Resources Agencies to quantify the outbreak dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 in North American white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus; WTD) throughout its range in the United States. Local epidemics in WTD were well approximated by a single-outbreak peak followed by fade out. Outbreaks peaked early in the northeast and mid- Atlantic. Damage assessments provide evidence for initiating and evaluating management programs that protect natural resources and human livelihoods against invasive species. Wild pigs (Sus scrofa) cause extensive damage in their native and non-native ranges, but the extent of current damage and efficacy of management of the damage (i.e., population control of wild pigs, exclusion fencing, etc.) remains poorly described. We conducted a systematic review of physical damage caused by wild pigs to summarize what is known and identify knowledge gaps for damage assessment. Introduction

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease of mammals caused by bacterial species of the Brucella genus. The reservoir for disease is typically mammals, with species of Brucella found infecting amphibians, bats, and marine mammals. Brucella spp. can pass directly to humans through contact with infected animals or their products. Brucella spp. can cause chronic debilitating infections in mammals, including humans, and is associated with spontaneous abortions in infected animals, causing reduced fecundity. In Hawai‘i, terrestrial species that could harbor Brucella spp. include swine, cattle, horses, and axis deer among others. The numerous feral swine in Hawai‘i are known to carry …

Young mammals make up a significant portion of animals brought into wildlife rehabilitation centers. Unfortunately, some of these presumed orphaned individuals are inappropriately removed from their native habitat. As such, there is a need for educational community outreach centered on the proper identification of orphaned wildlife that benefit from human intervention, while maximizing limited resources of rehabilitation facilities. Wildlife translocation and cross-species transmission can impede control and elimination of emerging zoonotic diseases. Tracking the geographic origin of both host and virus (i.e., translocation versus local infection) may help determine the most effective response when high-risk cases of emerging pathogens are identified in wildlife. In May 2022, a coyote (Canis latrans) infected with the raccoon (Procyon lotor) rabies virus variant (RRV) was collected in Lewis County, West Virginia, USA, an area free from RRV. BACKGROUND: Eight-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), a biomarker of oxidative damage evaluated in human neurodegenerative disease, has potential to correlate with postmortem diagnosis of neuroaxonal dystrophy/degenerative myeloencephalopathy (NAD/DM) in horses.

HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that 8-OHdG will be higher in CSF and serum from NAD/DM horses compared with horses with other neurologic diseases (CVSM, EPM) and a control group of neurologically normal horses. We also hypothesized that 8-OHdG will be higher in CSF compared with serum from NAD/DM horses.

Indonesia experienced new outbreaks of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in 2022 after being officially free from the disease for several decades. The outbreak started in April 2022 in East Java and rapidly spread to many regions in Indonesia. This study aimed to investigate the distribution pattern and risk factors associated with the FMD outbreaks in Java Island, Indonesia, from 2022 to 2023. Descriptive, spatial, spatiotemporal, and risk factor analyses were employed to examine the outbreak dynamics and contributing factors. LSD is considered as an emerging infectious disease in cattle in Asia and poses a significant threat to cattle production across Africa, Europe, and Asia. To achieve sustainable lamb production, it is crucial to determine the optimal slaughter age for maximum economic efficiencyand have a comprehensive understanding of breed characteristics. This study focuses on evaluating different nonlinear models todetermine the optimal slaughter age for Karacabey Merino and Kıvırcık lambs, renowned for their early development and superiormeat quality, respectively. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is a major pathogen responsible for substantial economic losses in the global swine industry, adversely affecting both reproductive and respiratory health. This study aimed to 1) determine the prevalence of ESBL-producing and fluoroquinolone-resistant Salmonella in pork, 2) investigate their genomic characteristics, and 3) estimate the risk of consumer exposure. Pork samples were collected from 58 markets across 19 districts in Bangkok. The study focused on third-generation cephalosporin resistance mediated by ESBLs and fluoroquinolone resistance, representing horizontal and vertical gene transfer, respectively. Out of 793 pork samples, 339 (42.8%) were positive for Salmonella, yielding 531 isolates from 33 serotypes. The most common were Salmonella Rissen (22.6%), Sinstorf (16.8%), and Derby (10.2%). The Asian king vulture (Sarcogyps calvus, AKV), an ecologically important forest scavenger, is an Old World vulture in the family Accipitridae. It is classified as a critically endangered species, with no genomic data currently available. This dissertation aimed to assemble a high-quality reference genome to enhance understanding of its genetic background, scavenging adaptations and genetic diversity within Thailand’s captive population. This dissertation aimed to advance the understanding of reproductive physiology and health in Asian elephants, providing critical insights and innovative methodologies for reproductive management. Chapter II established a foundational framework for normal reproductive cycling, detailing the luteal and follicular phases, and introduced a simplified, practical body condition score (BCS) method as a diagnostic tool for assessing general health and welfare. Arcobacter butzleri is an emerging zoonotic pathogen associated with gastrointestinal illnesses in humans, yet standardized antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) methods and interpretive breakpoints for this microorganism remain unavailable. Broth microdilution, despite being endorsed by the CLSI-VAST subcommittee, is often impractical in several laboratories. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate agar dilution as a more feasible alternative to broth microdilution. A total of 415 A. butzleri isolates from various meat sources in Bangkok, Thailand were confirmed by PCR and tested against ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, gentamicin, and tetracycline. African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV) is a large double-stranded DNA virus responsible for the highly contagious and lethal African Swine Fever (ASF), affecting the global porcine industry. The virus has a genome length of 170-194 kb and is broadly categorized into the left variable region (LVR), the right variable region (RVR), and the central conserved region (CCR). During the procedure, an endotracheal tube (ET) is essential for maintaining anesthetic depth, delivering anesthetic agents, and providing sufficient oxygen to reduce the risks of morbidity and mortality. Recently, FAO and WOAH have set the goal to eradicate the disease in 2030. To maintain disease vigilance, the Department of Livestock Development conducts regular screenings for anti-PPRV antibodies using a commercially available competitive ELISA (cELISA). The domestic dog has a unique reproductive physiology in which oocytes are ovulated at an immature stage and complete nuclear maturation within the oviduct approximately 48–72 hours after ovulation. This thesis aimed to investigate proteomic changes in both serum and oviductal secretions associated with oocyte development, using a combination of natural and hormonally induced ovulation models. To evaluate dynamic changes in serum proteins across the estrous cycle, samples from healthy bitches in four stages—anestrus, proestrus, estrus, and diestrus—were analyzed, revealing 38 significantly altered proteins. This study aimed to investigate the identification of flea species infesting goats and to study the molecular prevalence and genetic characterization of hemotropic mycoplasmas in goats and fleas. A total of 500 blood and 79 flea samples were collected from goat farms across seven provinces in Thailand between January 2017 and October 2023. Among the 500 goats examined, 6.6% were infested with fleas, which were morphologically identified and molecularly characterized using mitochondrial (cox-I, cox-II) and nuclear (ITS1, EF-1α) markers as Ctenocephalides orientis. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), food safety, and sustainable poultry farming are critical global concerns driving the exploration of probiotics as alternatives to antibiotics. This study focused on the isolation, characterization, and evaluation of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains and the performance of two probiotics—ProCU (a blend of locally isolated LAB strains) and TOP GUT (a commercial Clostridium butyricum product)—in mitigating Salmonella infection, improving growth performance, and modulating the gut microbiota and resistome in broiler chickens.
