Effective mitigation of human–wildlife conflict should aim to reduce conflicts while also minimizing wildlife mortality. Translocation is often used to mitigate human–wildlife conflict but translocated individuals may have reduced survival, which could negatively affect population growth and social acceptance of translocation as a management tool. Yet, non-translocated nuisance individuals may also have low survival due to inherent risks associated with nuisance behavior. We used a 38-year dataset of 1233 marked and translocated nuisance American black bears (Ursus americanus) as a model system with which to evaluate the impacts of translocation on nuisance bear survival. Perceived predation risk and the resulting antipredator behaviour varies across space, time and predator identity. Communities with multiple predators that interact and differ in their use of space, time of activity and hunting mode create a complex landscape for prey to avoid predation. Anthropogenic presence and disturbance have the potential to shift interactions among predators and prey and the where and when encounters occur. BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance and presence of zoonotic enteropathogens in shelter dogs pose a public health risk to shelter workers and potential adopters alike. In this study we investigated the prevalence of zoonotic bacterial pathogens and cephalosporin resistant (CefR) enteric bacteria in the feces of apparently healthy shelter dogs in the Cumberland Gap Region (CGR) in the US states of Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia.

Although data describe the presence and increase of inflammatory mediators in the local environment in periodontitis vs. health in humans, details regarding how these responses evolve in the transition from health to disease, changes during disease progression, and features of a resolved lesion remain unknown. This study used a nonhuman primate model of ligature-induced periodontitis in young, adolescent, adult, and aged animals to document features of inflammatory response affected by age. Increased secretion of proinflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFα), is often associated with adipose tissue dysregulation, which often accompanies obesity. High levels of TNFα have been linked to the development of insulin resistance in several tissues and organs, including skeletal muscle and the liver. In this study, we examined the complex regulatory roles of TNFα in murine hepatocytes utilizing a combination of global proteomic and phosphoproteomic analyses. Our results show that TNFα promotes extensive changes not only of protein levels, but also the dynamics of their downstream phosphorylation signaling. Lesser scaup (Aythya affinis) and greater scaup (A. marila), hereafter scaup, consume a variety of aquatic invertebrates, plants, and occasionally small fish. Scaup have foraged on commercial aquaculture farms in the southern United States for decades. However, the types, abundance, and rate of fish exploitation by scaup on baitfish and sportfish farms are not well documented. Thus, information is needed to understand how fish and other foods influence scaup use of aquatic resources, and any potential economic effects of depredation of fish. The ability to produce outer membrane projections in the form of tubular membrane extensions (MEs) and membrane vesicles (MVs) is a widespread phenomenon among diderm bacteria. Despite this, our knowledge of the ultrastructure of these extensions and their associated protein complexes remains limited. Here, we surveyed the ultrastructure and formation of MEs and MVs, and their associated protein complexes, in tens of thousands of electron cryo-tomograms of ~90 bacterial species that we have collected for various projects over the past 15 years (Jensen lab database), in addition to data generated in the Briegel lab. In recent years, small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) have been used widely to monitor animals because of their customizability, ease of operating, ability to access difficult to navigate places, and potential to minimize disturbance to animals. Automatic identification and classification of animals through images acquired using a sUAS may solve critical problems such as monitoring large areas with high vehicle traffic for animals to prevent collisions, such as animal-aircraft collisions on airports. Little is known about disease transmission relevant contact rates at the wildlife-livestock interface and the factors shaping them. Indirect contact via shared resources is thought to be important but remains unquantified in most systems, making it challenging to evaluate the impact of livestock management practices on contact networks. Carp edema virus (CEV), a poxvirus from the family Poxviridae, was first detected in 1974 in Japan and has since spread to most parts of the world. CEV is the etiological agent of koi sleepy disease (KSD), which has adverse health effects on both koi and common carp fish species. This study was conducted to investigate the dynamics and evolution of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) genotype 1 following its introduction into a herd concurrently infected with both PRRSV genotypes. The results demonstrated that 2 novel genotype 1 groups emerged, termed clusters II and III. The emergence of cluster II suggested that this cluster of genotype 1 virus potentially correlated with the outbreak. Then, cluster III was detected with the disappearance of cluster II. This study evaluated the clinical efficacy of three different closure techniques on postoperative pain and surgical complications in cats. It was a randomized, clinical trial conducted at different veterinary clinics in Lahore, Pakistan. Forty-eight (n = 48) cats underwent midline incision for ovariohysterectomy and were assigned to one of three Groups representing different closure methods. In this study we aimed to describe the potential diagnostic efficiency of CRP and suPAR in dogs infected with E. canis and the association between suPAR and CRP with renal failure. Plague is caused by a bacterial pathogen (Yersinia pestis) that can infect a wide range of mammal species, but its presence in wildlife is often underappreciated. Using a large-scale data set (n = 44,857) that details the extent of Y. pestis exposure in wildlife, we document exposure in 18 wildlife species, including coyotes (Canis latrans), bobcats (Lynx rufus), and black bears (Ursus americanus). Rabies lyssavirus (RABV) is enzootic in raccoons across the eastern United States. Intensive management of RABV by oral rabies vaccination (ORV) has prevented its spread westward and shown evidence of local elimination in raccoon populations of the northeastern US. The USDA, Wildlife Services, National Rabies Management Program (NRMP) collaborates with other agencies to implement broad-scale ORV and conducts extensive monitoring to measure the effectiveness of the management. Six clamped suture knot techniques were compared to identify the effects on the biomechanic properties used as a model of extra-capsular stabilization. Six clamped suture knot techniques included square knot formed by clamping the first throw with toothed mosquito forceps (SQ-TM), non-toothed mosquito forceps (SQ-NTM), or needle holder (SQ-NH) and surgeon's knot formed by clamping the first throw with toothed mosquito forceps (SG-TM), non-toothed mosquito forceps (SG-NTM), or needle holder (SG-NH). This study determined the molecular characterization of Paramphistomum epiclitum using the second internal transcribed spacer (ITS-2) grouping and secondary structure analysis from buffaloes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan. Paramphistomes were collected from the rumen of 25 infected buffaloes and their DNA was separated. DNA was intensified, followed by sequencing. Phylogenetic examinations were carried out using the Maximum Composite Likelihood approach. The results revealed extensive intraspecific and interspecific varieties among different paramphistomid species. Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a potential threat and an economically detrimental disease of calf-rearing in Ethiopia. This study was designed to isolate the major bacterial pathogens associated with respiratory disease of calves and the lung lesions involved. A crosssectional study with a purposive sampling method was employed in 170 calves during the study period from April 2018 to October 2018. The Bacteriological and molecular assay revealed overall isolation of 156 (91.76%) bacterial pathogens. Gross inspection of pneumonic lungs revealed one or more lesions of hydatidosis (46.67%), emphysema (44.44%), congestion (35.56%), hemorrhage (20.0%) and atelectasis (15.56%). The yak is an ideal animal model for the study of adaptation to hypoxia at high altitudes. The objective of this study was to investigate external appearances, vital signs, hematological parameters, malondialdehyde and total antioxidant power to find correlations and to predict total antioxidant power in cats. Body condition scores, mucous membrane color scores, heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature, hematological parameters, malondialdehyde and ferric reducing antioxidant capacity of 27 cats were measured. The article presents a modern interpretation of the immunostimulatory effect of the disinfectant “Biocontact Plus” on the bee organism. The minimum threshold concentrations of the disinfectant with bactericidal effect were determined in vitro. The stimulating effect of 0.15 % of the concentration of active substances of the disinfectant has been confirmed in vivo. The immunostimulatory effect of this concentration on the immune status of bee colonies is interpreted (the number of young and mature immunocytes). This study evaluated the patterns of prescription/request of vitamins, minerals and vitamin-mineral formulations (V-MF) for dogs presented for veterinary care at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital Nsukka (VTHN), Nigeria, between January 2013 and December 2017. Hospital records of a total of 4074 dogs were used for the study. Overall, vitamins, minerals and V-MF were prescribed/requested for 3096 out of the 4074 cases (75.33%). The frequency of prescription/requests for vitamins, minerals and V-MF significantly (p =0.000) increased from 54.1% in 2013 to 87.8% (highest) recorded in 2016 and the effect size of the variations across time was very strong (ɸc=0.268). Reversible Pulmonary Hypertension Secondary To Bronchopneumonia In A Kitten, Jidapa Tosuwan, Sirilak Disatian Surachetpong

A five-month-old Siamese kitten was presented with acute respiratory distress. The kitten had respiratory acidosis. The result of the feline N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) test kit was abnormal. Thoracic radiography revealed patchy lung infiltration and cardiomegaly. Severe right heart enlargement and an intermediate probability of pulmonary hypertension were suggested from echocardiography. Pulmonary hypertension secondary to severe pneumonia was suspected. The kitten was treated with oxygen supplementation, antibiotics and pimobendan. The clinical signs, radiography and echocardiography returned to normal after 30 days of treatment.

One of the causes of infertility in boars is nutritional deficiency. Interestingly, zinc has been used for improving semen quality in boars. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the effect of zinc as feed supplementation in order to improve semen quality in infertile boars. Three purebred Pietrain boars with a poor semen quality history were selected for the experiment.
