Infectious myonecrosis virus (IMNV) causes significant economic losses in farmed shrimp, where associated mortality in ponds can reach 70%. To explore host/pathogen interactions, a next-generation sequencing approach using lymphoid organ tissue from IMNV-infected Litopenaeus vannamei shrimp was conducted. Preliminary sequence assembly of just the virus showed that there were at least an additional 639 bp at the 5′ terminus and 23 nt at the 3′ terminus as compared with the original description of the IMNV genome (7561 nt). Northern blot and reverse transcription-PCR analysis confirmed the presence of novel sequence at both ends of the genome. Using 5′ RACE, an …

The advent of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) tetramer technology has been a major contribution to T cell immunology, because tetramer reagents permit detection of antigen-specific T cells at the single-cell level in heterogeneous populations by flow cytometry. However, unlike MHC class I tetramers, the utility of MHC class II tetramers has been less frequently reported. MHC class II tetramers can be used successfully to enumerate the frequencies of antigen-specific CD4 T cells in cells activated in vitro, but their use for ex vivo analyses continues to be a problem, due in part to their activation dependency for binding with T …

As feral swine continue to expand their geographical range and distribution across the United States, their involvement in crop damage, livestock predation, and pathogen transmission is likely to increase. Despite the relatively recent discovery of feral swine involvement in the aetiology of a variety of pathogens, their propensity to transmit and carry a wide variety of pathogens is disconcerting. We examined sera from 2055 feral swine for antibody presence to six serovars of Leptospira that can also infect humans, livestock or domestic animals. About 13% of all samples tested positive for at least one serovar, suggesting that Leptospira infection is …

Development And Characterization Of A Live-Attenuated Vaccine To Combat Equine Herpesvirus Type-1 Infections, Shiliang Anthony Liu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Equine Herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) is an important ubiquitous enzootic equine pathogen and one of the most common pathogens of the horse, causing, respiratory disease, epidemic abortion, occasionally neurological disease in horses, which leads to significant economic losses to the horse industry. EHV-1 induces several clinical signs of disease ranging in severity, from mild respiratory disease to abortion in pregnant mares, neonatal foal death and neuropathogenic disorders. Natural EHV-1 infection stimulated short lived protective immunity and had both humoral and cellular immune responses. Currently vaccination remains the best option to prevent EHV-1 infection and different applications of vaccination have been investigated …

Implementing Innovative Farm Management Practices On Dairy Farms: A Review Of Feeding Systems, Şeyda Özkan, Julian Hill
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The Australian dairy industry relies primarily on pasture for its feed supply. However, the variability in rainfall negatively affects plant growth, leading to uncertainty in dryland feed supply, especially during periods of high milk price. New feeding (complementary) systems combining perennial ryegrass with another crop and/or pasture species may have the potential to mitigate this seasonal risk and improve productivity and profitability by providing off-season feed. To date, the majority of research studying the integration of alternative crops into pasture-based systems has focused on substitution and utilization of alternative feed sources. There has been little emphasis on the impacts of …

Incidence And Occurrence Time Of Clinical Mastitis In Holstein Cows, Ismail Boujenane, Jalila El Aimani, Khalid By
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of clinical mastitis (CM) and its risk factors in 1725 Holstein cows. Data were collected from a private farm from 2008 to 2012. The analysis of risk factors, performed with logistic regression, showed that cows at parity 2, 3, and 4 had 65%, 88%, and 115% risk of mastitis, respectively. This risk was higher (P < 0.001) than in cows at first parity. Cows that calved from October to January had the highest (P < 0.05) risk of mastitis. The number of mastitis cases in cows at lactation 2, 3, and 4 was 18.5%, 25.9%, and 40.7%, respectively, and was higher compared to cows at first lactation. Furthermore, cows that calved from July to September showed the highest number of mastitis cases. Gamma regression parameter estimates showed that the onset time of mastitis 1 and 2 in cows that calved from October to January occurred at 16.3 and 8.5 days, respectively. This was later than cows calving from July to September. The study concluded that it is necessary to examine cows for CM during the first 2 months of lactation in order to prevent mastitis and decrease its rate of incidence.

Effect Of Organic Zinc Supplementation On Growth, Nutrient Utilization, And Plasma Zinc Status In Lambs, Mokhtar Mallaki, Mohammad Ali Norouzian, Ali Akbar Khadem
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of supplemental zinc (Zn) on performance, nutrient digestibility, and plasma Zn status in Zandi lambs. In experiment 1, 18 male lambs (BW = 21.30 ± 0.55 kg) were fed a basal diet containing 22.8 mg Zn/kg dry matter (DM) with no supplemental Zn (control) or 20 mg of supplemental Zn/kg of DM from Zn sulfate (ZnS) or Zn peptide (ZnP). Average daily gain and dry matter intake were higher for the lambs fed the diet supplemented with ZnP. Feed conversion ratio was significantly (P < 0.05) lower in the ZnP group compared to the control and ZnS groups. In experiment 2, an in vitro gas production technique was used to evaluate the effects of zinc source on the gas production parameters. Rate of gas production after 6 h and total production of gas after 24 and 48 h did not differ between groups. In vitro DM digestibility, short-chain fatty acids, and ME content were increased (P < 0.05) by ZnP supplementation when compared to the ZnS and control groups. The results of this study showed that feeding ZnP improves performance and digestibility of DM and could result in higher metabolizable energy and short-chain fatty acid yield.

The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic diversity of indigenous chicken populations raised in the Central Black Sea Region in order to assess genetic structures of these populations and to determine genetic relationships between the study populations and certain commercial chicken genotypes. Genotypic diversity of 45 Turkish village chicken populations located in 5 provinces in the Central Black Sea Region of Turkey and 2 commercial hybrid populations were compared using 28 autosomal …

The Effect Of Oleic And Linoleic Acids On In Vitro Bovineembryonic Development And Embryo Quality, Tahi̇r Karaşahi̇n, Şevket Arikan
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The present study was aimed at the investigation of the effects of oleic and linoleic acid on the in vitro development of Anatolian native black crossbred bovine embryos. Following the in vitro maturation and fertilization of oocytes, embryonic development stages were monitored using embryo culture medium supplemented with three different doses of oleic and linoleic acid (10, 100, and 1000 µM). Examination of the culture media 48 h after fertilization demonstrated that linoleic acid had no effect on embryo cleavage rates, while oleic acid produced a significant increase in cleavage rates (P < 0.01). It was determined that the highest dose of linoleic acid (1000 µM) and all three doses of oleic acid significantly increased the proportion of cultured oocytes developing to the morula-blastocyst stage (P < 0.001). As a result, while oleic acid significantly increased (P < 0.001) the proportion of embryos developing to the morula-blastocyst stage, linoleic acid had limited effects on embryonic development and quality. Thus, it was concluded that the supplementation of Anatolian native black crossbred bovine embryo cultures with oleic acid may induce positive effects on embryonic development and quality.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of capsaicin administration immunohistochemically on platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-C and platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR)-\alpha release in the small intestine tissues of rats. Rats were divided into three groups: group 1 (subcutaneous drug administration), group 2 (oral drug administration), and group 3 (subcutaneous sham administration). Histometric measurements and counts were performed in order to determine whether there was a difference between groups in terms of height of villi, depth of crypts, and goblet cell count in small intestine. The small intestine was examined by Crossman?s triple staining method and streptavidin-biotin …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influences of flunixin (FM) and tenoxicam (TN) on the pharmacokinetics of florfenicol (FF) after coadministration in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced endotoxemic rabbits. Fifteen male rabbits were used in this study. FF (20 mg/kg), FM (2 mg/kg), and TN (1 mg/kg) were coadministered via intravenous injection to the animals. The concentrations of FF were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection from 0.08 to 12 h in plasma. The plasma concentration-time profile of FF was described using a noncompartmental open model. In this study, terminal half-life, area under the curve, mean residence time, …

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of hypoxic stresses on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in cultured lung fibroblasts of meat-type chickens. Isolated and subcultured primary lung fibroblasts were exposed to hypoxia. The presence of VEGF and the effects of hypoxia on cultured lung fibroblasts and in the culture media were evaluated. Immunocytochemistry using streptavidin-biotin-peroxidase method and ELISA using commercially available primary monoclonal antibodies were used for evaluation in both 6-h and 12-h hypoxic fibroblasts. The level of VEGF was slightly higher in the 6-h hypoxic group (1.22 ng/mL) than in the 6-h control group (1.27 …
