Epidemics of swine infected with Mycoplasma suis, a hemotrophic pathogen, cause substantial economic losses to the swine industry worldwide. The complementary DNA sequences encoding two predicted extracellular domains of the OxaA protein of M. Suis were obtained using polymerase chain reaction and standard molecular cloning methods. The OxaA domains were expressed separately in Escherichia coli as glutathione-S-transferase (GST) fusion proteins, designated as GST-A and GST-B. The antigenicity of the GST-A and -B recombinant proteins was confirmed by western blotting. The GST-A and -B proteins were approximately 33.9 kDa and 34.6 kDa in size, respectively. Leishmaniasis is a public health problem in Brazil, and despite the control programs in place, Bahia remains one of the states with the highest incidence rates of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and visceral leishmaniasis (VL). This study proposed to develop and evaluate the applicability of ecological niche models (ENM) for leishmaniasis, to determine the influence of environmental and socioeconomic factors on the incidence of these diseases at three geographic scales: national, statewide and community. Five intestinal layers are commonly described ultrasonographically in dogs. However, current high-frequency endosonography allows the identification of 9 layers in people. The aim of this study was to describe ex vivo small intestinal layering in dogs and correlate ultrasonographic layering with histological layers. Our hypothesis was that, similar to findings in humans, discrepancies exist in thickness and visibility of intestinal layers between histology and ultrasound in dogs. Twelve adult dogs were included in the study. They were euthanized for reasons unrelated to gastrointestinal disease, but extensive medical history was unavailable. Duodenum, jejunum and ileum samples were resected immediately after euthanasia. …
