Crude and excretory/secretory (E/S) antigens of Fasciola hepatica were subjected to SDS-PAGE and Western blot analysis in order to identify protein bands that would enable the specific and sensitive immunodiagnosis of sheep. Sera from 20 sheep with natural infections of F. hepatica, Dicrocoelium dendriticum, Cyst hydatid, Cysticercus tenuicollis, Trichostrongylidae, Paramphistomum spp., and Trichuris spp. and the same number of sera naturally infected with the same helminths without F. hepatica were tested using Western blotting, and the bands obtained from positive and negative groups were compared. This case was determined accidentally in a 1.5-year-old, cross-breed male dog during a necropsy for an experimental study conducted in our laboratory, following a clinical examination as well as haematological, biochemical and urine analyses. The dog was clinically healthy. Haematological and biochemical parameters, except for a decrease in serum triiodothyronine (T_{3}), and urine analysis findings were within the reference range. Since the total of 150,000 doses of attenuated cell culture vaccine doses produced anually in Turkey does not meet the requirements of the country, by reducing the number of vaccine cells in a single dose, an increased number of vaccine doses was obtained for cattle, and doses consisting of different numbers of vaccine cells were tested according to their protective efficiency against tropical theileriosis in cattle. The population structure, mortality and growth of the tench [Tinca tinca (L., 1758)] in Çivril Lake was investigated, using 506 fish caught with various gill nets between February 1998 and January 1999. The percentages of females and males in the population were 38.34% and 61.66%, respectively, and the overall female-male sex ratio was 1:1.61. Specimens ranged from 11.4 to 28.8 cm in fork length, and from 27.7 to 420.4 g in weight. The age distribution was I-V in the population. Some Growth Characteristics Of The Brown Trout Salmo Trutta Macrostigma (Dumeril, 1858) In Tekederesi (Erzurum), Esat Mahmut Kocaman, Aslan Yusuf Yüksel, Muhammed Atamanalp

Some growth properties of the brown trout Salmo trutta macrostigma (Dumeril, 1858) in Tekederesi, which is a branch feeding the Karasu River, were investigated. The age composition of the population varied between I and V. The population was 64.81% female and 35.19% male and the differences between the sexes were statistcally significant (P < 0.05). The mean fork length and mean body weight of the 54 individuals examined were 16.58 cm and 53.15 g, respectively. The differences between the sexes according to age groups for fork length and total weight were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). The specific and relative growth for length and weight were maximum at the second age. The length-weight relationship of the population was calculated by the least squares method and the logarithmic equation was found to be Log W = -1.4684 + 2.590 Log FL (fork length). …

The Effect Of Grower Diet Protein Level On The Performance And Some Slaughtering Characteristics Of Sex-Separated And Mixed- Sex Broilers, Veysel Ayhan, Mehmet Bozkurt, Kami̇l Küçükyilmaz

This trial examined 1350 sex-separated broilers at 24 days of age. Chicks were fed standard broiler starter diet for the first 21 days. Isocaloric grower diets (16.84%, 18.00% and 19.46% crude protein, respectively) were offered to broilers housed in sex-separated and mixed-sex pens from days 24 to 45 of the experimental period. While the body weights of sex-separated and mixed-sex broilers were similar, diet protein level and sex had a significant effect on the body weight of broilers during the experimental period (P < 0.01). Male broilers consumed more feed and had better feed conversion than females (P < 0.01). However, separate sex rearing had no significant effect on feed consumption or feed conversion rate (P > 0.05). The anaesthetic effects of quinaldine sulphate (QS) together with diazepam (D) on tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) (20-25 g) were studied at different temperatures. The application of QS with D significantly increased the anesthesia level of QS in the fish. Depending on temperature, the fish entered light or deep anesthesia levels with the use of QS alone at 10 or 35 mg/l, compared to 5 or 20 mg/l when used together with D (1-2 mg/l). The major aim of this study was to analyze the meat cost per kg live weight and marketing margins of cattle fattening farms in Erzurum province in the 2001 production period. Data were collected from 130 cattle fattening farms and different associations. Cattle fattening farms were classified according to their size into 3 groups using stratified random sampling. An investigation was carried out to determine whether transmission of passive immunity from the mother to the fry occurred in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata. Female guppies were immunized by an intraperitoneal injection of formalin-killed Aeromonas hydrophila bacterin. Agglutinating antibody titers and the precipitating antibody in the body fluid of female guppies and their fry were investigated. The protection against the A. hydrophila pathogen by maternal immunity was also tested. The effects of ethanol and 4-methyl pyrazole were investigated in the treatment of 30 dogs toxicated with antifreeze (AF). The AF toxication produced significant increases in blood urea, creatinin and potassium and a decrease in blood calcium levels. Calcium-oxalate monohydrate, which is pathognomic for AF toxication, was consistently seen in urine sediment. Ethanol was rarely effective on the multisystemic effects that occurred in dogs or ADH inhibition. CNS findings were also observed after ethanol administration. In this study, changes in the food component and meat yield in hot smoked tench (Tinca tinca L., 1758) were investigated. The meat yield of tench was calculated as 49.27 ± 0.76%. Some growth properties of 407 specimens of the mirror carp population introduced into Gelingüllü Dam Lake between 1998 and 2000 were studied in order to determine changes in growth over time. The data obtained were compared with those of other populations of the same species in other regions of Turkey. The age of the mirror carp in Gelingüllü Dam Lake ranged between I and V. The Effect Of Gnrh Administration On Plasma Progesterone And Reproductive Performance In Ewes, Mehmet Aki̇f Çam, Mehmet Kuran, Erdoğan Selçuk

Two experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of GnRH administration at mating and on day 12 post-mating on the reproductive performance of Karayaka and Sakız x Karayaka (F_2) crossbred sheep. In the first experiment, ewes were allocated into a control group (K, n = 27), and groups administered 4 µg GnRH at mating (A, n = 27), on day 12 post-mating (AS, n = 30) and both at mating and on day 12 post-mating (AAS, n = 30). GnRH administration in the A and AS groups increased plasma progesterone concentrations (P < 0.01). The pregnancy rate at first mating in the AS group (86.7%) was higher than those in the ASS (66.7%), A (51.9%) and K (51.9%) groups (P < 0.01). There was no difference between the treatment groups in terms of litter sizes (1.31, 1.21, 1.21 and 1.20 for AS, K, A and ASS, respectively). In the second experiment, ewes were allocated into 2 groups, a control group (K, n = 70) and a group administered 4 µg GnRH on day 12 post-mating (AS, n = 73). The quality of imported mackerel (Scomber scombrus Linnaeus, 1758) was examined and the effect of different thawing methods on the quality was determined. The frozen samples were taken from 3 points: the first depot, the second depot and the retail sellers. The study was carried out in duplicate. The quality of the samples was determined according to sensory, chemical and microbiological analyses. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Leishmania infantum and Dirofilaria immitis infection in dogs housed outdoors in Aydın province and Selçuk in western Turkey. Anti-Leishmania antibodies were evaluated in sera samples by IFA and ELISA techniques. The presence of D. immitis microfilariae was determined in blood samples by use of the modified Knott’s test. Using the IFA and ELISA on 158 dogs surveyed, 5 (3.2%) were positive for anti-Leishmania antibodies while 22 (13.9%) were found infected with D. immitis. In this study, the growth and viability status of Listeria monocytogenes were investigated during the ripening and storage period of sucuk (Turkish dry fermented sausage) produced using different lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus plantarum Lb 8 and L. plantarum Lb 75, Pediococcus acidilactici Lb 626, P. pentosaceus Lb 1010, L. sakei 706 and L. sakei 706-B). The effects of different nitrite doses (50, 100, 150 and 200 ppm NaNO_2) and starter culture (Lactobacillus plantarum + Staphylococcus carnosus, a commercial preparation) on the growth of Listeria monocytogenes in sucuk (Turkish dry fermented sausage) were investigated. The initial inoculation of the L. monocytogenes was 10^4 cfu/g for each sucuk dough mix. The morphology of Heligmosomum costellatum, a nematode of field mice (Microtus epiraticus), was described by scanning electron microscope. The scanning electron microscopic view of this nematode revealed that the anterior end was surrounded by 2 cephalic vesicles. The 2 copulatory spicules of the male were enveloped in membrane and the male bursa was large. The female posterior end was characterized by a caudal spine. The body of this parasite had transverse ridges.

An Investigation Of Quality Changes In Anchovy (Engraulis Encrasicolus, L. 1758) Stored At Different Temperatures, Sevi̇m Köse, Mehmet Emi̇n Erdem

Quality changes in anchovy caught at different times during storage at ambient and refrigerated temperatures were investigated in 3 different batches. Sampling was carried out each day during storage. The results showed no significant differences among the anchovy batches except for bacteriological counts and trimethylamine (TMA) values at refrigerated temperatures. Storage time and temperature had a significant effect (P < 0.001, P < 0.05) on sensory, bacteriological and chemical values. Bacteriological counts and chemical values increased significantly (P < 0.05, P < 0.001) depending on time, while sensory results decreased (P < 0.05). According to sensory results, samples were acceptable for 1 day at ambient temperatures and for 2 days refrigerated. This study showed that refrigeration did not extend the shelf-life of fresh anchovies by more than a day compare to ambient temperature.

Phylogenetic relationships in some Turkish dog breeds were investigated to determine protein polymorphisms by electrophoretic analysis. Blood samples were collected from 276 dogs including the Kangal, Akbash and German Shepherd as well as Doberman Pinscher, Setter, Pointer and Labrador breeds. Enzymes and proteins were separated electrophoretically using isoelectrofocusing gel, starch gel and polyacrylamide gel. Polymorphism on albumin (Alb), postalbumin-1 (Poa-1), postalbumin-3 (Poa-3), transferrin (Tf), and esterase (ArE) loci was detected, while no polymorphism was observed on the hemoglobin (Hb) locus. To study the effect of acute fluoride poisoning on nitric oxide and methemoglobin formation, 250 mg/kg bw sodium fluoride was applied alone and verapamil was applied together with fluoride. Blood nitric oxide (Griess reaction) and calcium levels; hemoglobin, methemoglobin and hematocrit values; and erythrocyte counts were determined and compared with those of the controls. After the fluoride application it was found that there was a relative relationship between the increase in nitric oxide and methemoglobin levels and the decrease in calcium, hemoglobin and hematocrit levels and erythrocyte count. The cardiopulmonary and clinical effects of the infusion of pentobarbital sodium in combination with fentanyl for long-term anaesthesia in 9 pigs were investigated. Pigs were premedicated with i.m. atropine at a dose of 0.05 mg/kg and azaperon at a dose of 2 mg/kg. General anaesthesia was induced with i.v. thiopental sodium at a dose of 3.3 mg/kg. After induction of anaesthesia, the pigs were intubated and supplied with oxygen during anaesthesia.
