Escherichia coli is the most common bacterium that has been isolated from the bacterial culture of uterine and fecal samples of dogs with pyometra. The aim of the present study was to determine whether this organism could be relevant to the pathogenesis of pyometra in dogs. Fecal and uterine samples were collected from 17 bitches with pyometra. E. coli strains were isolated in all samples. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of ascorbic acid on the freezability and spermatological characteristics of ram semen diluted with Tris-glucose-egg yolk based extenders containing different proportions of glycerol. Six Akkaraman rams were used. Semen was collected by electroejaculator once every 3 days. The spermatological characteristics of the collected semen samples were determined. This study was conducted during the Engraulis encrasicolus fishing seasons of 1998-1999 and 1999-2000, and some basic characteristics of this population off the Turkish coast of the Black Sea were examined. Weight-length relationships and von Bertalanffy growth equations were estimated as W = 0.0083 L^{2.872} and Lt = 15.66[1 – e^{-0.3368 (t+2.526)}] and W = 0.0076 L^ {2.919} and L t = 17.07 [1 – e^{–0.2836 (t+2.1047)}] for the 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 fishing seasons, respectively. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between antibiotic resistance patterns among Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica Serovar Enteritidis isolates (Salmonella Enteritidis) of human and poultry origin. Antibiotic resistance of 97 Salmonella Enteritidis isolates from 25 chicken meat, 25 chicken intestine and 47 human fecal samples was examined using the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS, 1997) disk diffusion method. Resistance patterns of the isolates were as follows: Of the 25 chicken meat isolates 4 were resistant to some antibiotics. The death kinetics of Escherichia coli O157:H7, E. coli type 1 and total coliforms after irradiation treatment in minced beef were evaluated to analyze the effect of increasing irradiation doses. Irradiation doses ranging from 0.0 kGy to 1.5 kGy were evaluated for reducing numbers of E. coli during frozen storage conditions at –18 oC for 30 days. D_{10} values of E. coli O157:H7, E. coli type 1, and total coliforms were 0.245 kGy, 0.552 kGy and 0.293 kGy, respectively. The anaesthetic and cardiopulmonary effects of medetomidine-ketamine (MK) and xylazine-ketamine (XK) combinations were compared in rabbits. A total of 18 rabbits were randomly assigned to 2 different groups. The rabbits in the MK group (n = 9) were given 0.25 mg/kg of medetomidine and 50 mg/kg of ketamine intramuscularly. The XK group was given 4 mg/kg of xylazine and 50 mg/kg of ketamine via the same route. This study was performed to evaluate the feasibility of bone injection gun assisted intraosseous administration of contrast media as an alternative to the intravenous route for urography. Intravenous urographies were obtained in 6 rabbits. Urographic examinations by the intraosseous route were performed in the same animals 48 h later. After adequate anesthesia, the retroauricular vein was punctured for intravenous injection and a bone injection gun was used for intraosseous injections to the distal one-third of the rabbit femur. Crude and excretory/secretory (E/S) antigens of Fasciola hepatica were subjected to SDS-PAGE and Western blot analysis in order to identify protein bands that would enable the specific and sensitive immunodiagnosis of sheep. Sera from 20 sheep with natural infections of F. hepatica, Dicrocoelium dendriticum, Cyst hydatid, Cysticercus tenuicollis, Trichostrongylidae, Paramphistomum spp., and Trichuris spp. and the same number of sera naturally infected with the same helminths without F. hepatica were tested using Western blotting, and the bands obtained from positive and negative groups were compared. Since the total of 150,000 doses of attenuated cell culture vaccine doses produced anually in Turkey does not meet the requirements of the country, by reducing the number of vaccine cells in a single dose, an increased number of vaccine doses was obtained for cattle, and doses consisting of different numbers of vaccine cells were tested according to their protective efficiency against tropical theileriosis in cattle. Some growth properties of the brown trout Salmo trutta macrostigma (Dumeril, 1858) in Tekederesi, which is a branch feeding the Karasu River, were investigated. The age composition of the population varied between I and V. The population was 64.81% female and 35.19% male and the differences between the sexes were statistcally significant (P < 0.05). The mean fork length and mean body weight of the 54 individuals examined were 16.58 cm and 53.15 g, respectively. The differences between the sexes according to age groups for fork length and total weight were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). The specific and relative growth for length and weight were maximum at the second age. The length-weight relationship of the population was calculated by the least squares method and the logarithmic equation was found to be Log W = -1.4684 + 2.590 Log FL (fork length). …

The Effect Of Grower Diet Protein Level On The Performance And Some Slaughtering Characteristics Of Sex-Separated And Mixed- Sex Broilers, Veysel Ayhan, Mehmet Bozkurt, Kami̇l Küçükyilmaz

This trial examined 1350 sex-separated broilers at 24 days of age. Chicks were fed standard broiler starter diet for the first 21 days. Isocaloric grower diets (16.84%, 18.00% and 19.46% crude protein, respectively) were offered to broilers housed in sex-separated and mixed-sex pens from days 24 to 45 of the experimental period. While the body weights of sex-separated and mixed-sex broilers were similar, diet protein level and sex had a significant effect on the body weight of broilers during the experimental period (P < 0.01). Male broilers consumed more feed and had better feed conversion than females (P < 0.01). However, separate sex rearing had no significant effect on feed consumption or feed conversion rate (P > 0.05). The major aim of this study was to analyze the meat cost per kg live weight and marketing margins of cattle fattening farms in Erzurum province in the 2001 production period. Data were collected from 130 cattle fattening farms and different associations. Cattle fattening farms were classified according to their size into 3 groups using stratified random sampling. In this study, 3484 milk yield records (1520 first, 1206 second and 758 third lactations) obtained from 1816 cows born between 1990 and 1997 in the Holstein-Friesian herd of Ceylanpınar State Farm were used to estimate the heritabilities, and genetic and phenotypic correlations between lactation milk yields using an individual animal model and the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) method. The effects of different nitrite doses (50, 100, 150 and 200 ppm NaNO_2) and starter culture (Lactobacillus plantarum + Staphylococcus carnosus, a commercial preparation) on the growth of Listeria monocytogenes in sucuk (Turkish dry fermented sausage) were investigated. The initial inoculation of the L. monocytogenes was 10^4 cfu/g for each sucuk dough mix. The sex composition, age, length and body mass relationship, Von Bertalanffy growth equation and condition factor of 342 individuals were investigated to determine some population parameters of goldfish (Carassius auratus L., 1758) between June 1998 and May 1999 in Lake Eğirdir. Sex composition was 32.75 % females and 67.25 % males and the fish were 0-IV years old. An emerging epizootic of mycobacteriosis currently threatens striped bass Morone saxatilis populations in Chesapeake Bay, USA. Several species of mycobacteria, including Mycobacterium marinum, species resembling M. avium, M. gordonae, M. peregrinum, M. scrofulaceum and M. terrae, and the new species M. shottsii have been isolated from diseased and healthy bass. In this study, we describe the ultrastructure of developing M. marinum granulomas in experimentally infected bass over a period of 45 wk. Bacteriological examinations were performed on 206 mammary tissue samples taken from 160 cows with mastitis in Elazığ. The isolates were identified as Staphylococcus aureus (39.04%), Staphylococcus epidermidis (17.81%), Actinomyces pyogenes (14.38%), Escherichia coli (8.9%), Streptococcus agalactiae (6.16%), Streptococcus uberis (4.11%), Streptococcus dysgalactiae (3.42%), Corynebacterium bovis (1.37%), Pasteurella haemolytica (1.37%) and Bacillus cereus (1.37%).

The aim of this study was to determine the quality changes of anchovy (Engraulis engrasicholus, L. 1758) and bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix, L. 1766) due to a multiple freezing-thawing process. A data set containing 2-year test day milk yield records was used. Random regression model solutions established with a covariance function (CF) approach was used. Persistence and lactation curve explanation performances of polynomial, Wilmink and Ali-Schaeffer curve definitions were compared for CF. When comparisons were made for R2 values, polynomial (0.9835) definition headed the list, followed by the Ali-Schaeffer curve (0.9534), and Wilmink curve (0.6023) definitions. Among the persistence predictions in respect of lactation orders, the Ali-Schaeffer curve provided predictions with the minimum variance, followed by the Wilmink and polynomial curve approaches. Effects Of Different Diets On The Growth Performance, Gonad Development And Body Composition At First Sexual Maturity Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Devri̇m Memi̇ş, Hüseyi̇n Gün

Rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss with an initial mean weight of 174 g (1+ year old) were fed on 3 different commercial diets (1 extruded pellet and 2 steam pellet) in the same environmental conditions until their first spawning. Changes in growth performance (weight gain, condition factor, specific growth rate and feed conversion rate), gonadosomatic index (GSI), hepatosomatic index (HSI) and body composition (protein, lipid, ash and dry matter) were investigated. The mean weight gain and condition factor for fish fed the extruded diet was significantly greater than for those fed the steam pellet diets (P < 0.05 ). There were no significant differences in specific growth rate, mean length increments and feed conversion rate among the groups, although the feed conversion rate for the extruded diet was slightly lower than the others. The HSI of the group fed an extruded diet was significantly greater than those of the others ( P < 0.05 ). The GSI values of female and male fish at the end of the study (October) did not differ significantly among the groups. Similarly, diet had no significant effects on the muscle composition of the trial fish, except that the muscle lipid of the group fed the extruded diet was significantly higher than those of the other groups (P < 0.05).

The objectives of this experiment were to induce prostate atrophy by ligating prostate vessels and nerves and evaluate the histological changes in the prostates. Animal material consisted of 10 normal (healthy) crossbred dogs. The branches of the prostate artery, prostate veins, prostate innervating nerves, and hypogastric and pelvic nerves were ligated and then cut for each of the dogs under general anesthesia.
