The objective of this study was to determine the effect of albumin and cholesterol substituted for egg yolk in goat semen extender after frozen-thawed on semen quality and pregnancy rate. Allergen Sensitization Patterns Of Allergic Dogs: Ige-Microarray Analysis, Yun-Hsia Hsiao, Charles Chen, Ton Willemse
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
It was the aim of this study to determine sensitization rates to environmental allergens in 50 dogs with allergic dermatitis. Protein microarray of the dogs’ sera was used to identify allergen-specific IgE against 25 most common allergens. Increased IgE levels were most frequently observed for house dust mites (D. pteronyssinus 42.0%, D. farinae 38.0%) and storage mites (22-50%). In particular, the dogs with non-food-induced allergic dermatitis showed higher sensitization rates to mites compared to the dogs with food-induced allergic dermatitis, or a combination thereof. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of omega-3 concentrate on pain management in dogs with osteoarthritis (OA) at the coxofemoral joint. Totally, 31 dogs with confirmed coxofemoral OA were orthopedically evaluated for pain scores at walk and trot (1-6), joint manipulation (1-3), and examining range of motion (1-4). Toxoplasmosis is an important zoonotic disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii, an obligated zoonotic apicomplexan parasite. The infection varies according to geographical areas. This work aimed to study the seroprevalence and genotype of T. gondii infection in domestic, captive and free-range wild felids, and in their small mammal prey, rats (Rattus spp). The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate changes in electrocardiograms (ECG) and cardiac arrhythmias in 29 dogs with degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) treated with pimobendan chronically. All dogs had normal ECG before pimobendan administration. The dogs were classified according to ECG after pimobendan administration into 2 groups: normal ECG (n=19) and abnormal ECG (n=10). Age, sex, breed, serum alkaline phosphatase, concurrent digoxin administration, total daily dosage of pimobendan and digoxin, duration of pimobendan administration, and ECG parameters including heart rate, P wave, PR interval, QRS complex, and QT interval were analyzed. Retained foetal membrane (RFM) is a common reproductive pathology that harms the health of dairy cows. The aim of this study was to clarify the pathogenesis of RFM and screen for an early clinical diagnostic marker of this disease by using comparative proteomics and bioinformatics. Three RFM placental tissues from three cows and an equal number of normal placental tissues were collected for this study. A 7-year-old, 10 kg male poodle dog was presented at the Small Animal Teaching Hospital, with the clinical signs of chronic coughing, bad deglutition and severe respiratory distress. On oral examination, a large mass arisen from the throat was found. Because the skull-cervical radiographs revealed only a large soft tissue pharyngeal mass which were difficult to indicate the mass types and the tissue invasiveness, the computed tomography (CT) was subsequently applied. The CT result showed that the mass was an encapsulated hypoattenuation mass (2.5 x 4.3 x 2.4 cm) at the right pharyngeal area without any adjacent soft tissue invasions. …

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the protective efficacy of live LaSota strain Newcastle disease virus (NDV) vaccine administered with different routes against a NDV challenge in layer-type chickens. Fifty male layer-type chickens were divided into 3 groups. There were 20 chickens/group for the vaccinated groups (Groups 1 and 2) and 10 chickens for the non-vaccinated control group (Group 3). The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for semen quality and production traits of pure-bred Finnish-Norwegian boars raised in Thailand. Data used in this study were 9,760 records of semen collection and 108 records of performance tests (from 25 Duroc, 59 Landrace, and 24 Yorkshire boars). Semen quality traits considered per collection were semen volume (SV), semen concentration (SC), total sperm (TS), and total abnormality (TA). This study aimed to identify competitive exclusion (CE) isolated from native chickens and organic layers raised under non-antimicrobial usage farms. The protection of CE was tested against Campylobacter jejuni challenges in broilers. Lactobacillus spp., Bacillus spp. and Enterococcus faecium were identified from 50 adult chicken feces of those farms. According to antimicrobial-resistance concerns of European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the use of CE that is susceptible to antimicrobials is preferred. We aimed to evaluate the in vitro bactericidal efficacy of two routine antiseptics used in veterinary hospital, povidone-iodine and chlorhexidine gluconate in isopropanol (CGI),against canine coagulase-positive staphylococci (CoPS). Twenty CoPS were divided into 5 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) and 5 isolates each of S. pseudintermedius, S. aureus and S. schleiferi subsp. coagulans defined as methicillin-susceptible CoPS (MSCoPS). This is the first report on the quantitative method for detecting Vibrio parahaemolyticus using the Bio-Theta DOXTM system. Seven V. parahaemolyticus strains and 23 non-V. parahaemolyticus strains were assessed. The rate of positive detection of Vibrio in samples of the 7 V. parahaemolyticus strains at high concentration (105 cfu/ml), medium concentration (103 cfu/ml), and low concentration (10 cfu/ml) was 100%. All 7 V. parahaemolyticus strains displayed good linear calibration curves for detection time relative to bacterial count (r > 0.993). The current study was conducted to evaluate the effects of sub-therapeutic antibiotics (avilamycin and flavophospholipol) in animal feed on anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties in broilers to understand the mechanisms of AGPs. Four hundred and fifty six 1-day-old broilers (ROSS 308) were divided into 3 groups with 4 replications. Three experimental diets composed of a corn-soybean meal based diet supplemented with 0, 10 mg/kg avilamycin and 5 mg/kg flavophospholipol were randomly provided to the broilers for 42 days, respectively. The objectives of this study were to investigate the prevalence of subclinical laminitis and to evaluate its effects on reproductive performances in dairy cows in Thailand. Ninety-eight lactating cows from 22 smallholder dairy farms and 138 lactating cows from one large scale dairy farm were assessed for subclinical laminitis by evaluating lesions after hoof trimming. Hemorrhagic lesions of the sole and white line area were evaluated. Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (Aptt) In Dogs Tested By In-House Crude Cephalin From Canine Brain, Sarawut Yama, Am Chaimongkhol, Somsak Channoi, Sakhorn Pornprasert, Wanna Suriyasathaporn
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
This research aimed to identify the reference value of activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) in normal dogs using crude cephalin prepared in-house from canine brain, and to examine its efficacy in detecting disorders of coagulation factors. A total of 105 blood samples were collected from normal dogs between January-May 2010. The APTT value was found to be 10.43-19.08 seconds and significantly correlated with the APTT value of a test using a commercial reagent (Pearson’s correlation, r = 0.9923, p < 0.001). On testing the reagent’s efficacy in detecting disorders of coagulation factors by using cryopoor plasma, it was discovered that the APTT value ranged from 24.50 to 33.44 seconds, and the mean value of the APTT by means of cryopoor plasma was significantly greater than that of normal dogs (p < 0.001). The aforementioned APTT value significantly correlated with that obtained by means of a commercial reagent (Pearson’s correlation, r = 0.9984, p < 0.001). From this research, it can be confirmed that in-house crude cephalin can be substituted for commercial crude cephalin. Besides, the obtained reference range can further be applied in veterinary hematology laboratory.

Recently, alternative medical treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) using intra-prostatic injection of botulinum toxin type A (BT-A) has been reported in men and mice. However, in terms of animal welfare, it remains questionable when applied to clinical use. This study aimed at evaluating the effects of intra-prostatic injection of BT-A (Botox, Allergan, USA) in dogs. Canine influenza viruses (CIVs) have been reported in dogs worldwide. Due to the relatively high risk of influenza A virus (IAV) infections in dogs and humans through dog-human interface, the seroprevalence of IAVs in dogs in Thailand was surveyed. The potential transmission of methicillin-resistant coagulase-positive staphylococci (MRCoPS) between dogs and human has been noted as of potential public health concern. The current study aimed to determine the emergence of methicillin-resistant coagulase-positive staphylococci (MRCoPS) in dogs after oral administration of cephalexin. Skin swabs from 38 dogs without a history of antibiotic exposure were collected before drug administration (pre-treatment dogs) and during drug administration within one month (treatment dogs). A total of 196 CoPS were isolated from the nose, perineum and skin lesions. Fewer MRCoPS were isolated from the pre-treatment dogs (7.89%) than from the treatment dogs (p<0.001). Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus (S.) schleiferi subsp. coagulans (MRSSc) were only recovered from the treatment dogs, whereas methicillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius (MRSP) were found in both groups. Overall, a high incidence of MRSP was found since the first week after administration. The nose and perineum were confirmed as the most common site of carriage of MRCoPS rather than the skin lesions. In conclusion, the oral cephalexin administration was associated with the emergence of MRCoPS on dog skin, a potential source of contamination to humans.

Chlamydophilosis is an important, worldwide zoonosis caused by Chlamydophila psittaci. The aim of this study was to detect C. psittaci on choanal and cloacal swabs which were collected from 178 captive psittacine birds (23 different species) from eight provinces in Thailand. ompA gene detection using nested PCR showed that 7.87% (n=14) were positive for C. psittaci. The C. psittaci detection from two site collections (choanal and cloacal swabs) using nested PCR was more sensitive than from one site collection.
