The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
A cross-sectional study was designed and 3,872 blood samples were collected from apparently healthy sheep, goats and cows in Fars province, the south of Iran. The sera were screened for detection of bluetongue virus (BTV) antibodies using a commercially competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. Overall prevalence rate of BTV antibodies among the domestic ruminants was 57.64% (70.93%, 55.70% and 19.77% for sheep, goat and cow, respectively). Associations between each independent variable, including ruminant type, age, sex, region, farming system and breed, and BTV infection were statistically significant (p<0.05). Females were 1.32 times more likely to exhibit seropositivity. Odds ratio for BTV infection was higher in older animals and traditional farming. The results revealed a wide spread of BTV infection in the domestic ruminants, especially in sheep and goat. Further studies of the distribution of Culicoides vectors in the region, virus isolation and genome sequencing of the isolated viruses are suggested.

Indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (I-ELISA) for antibody detection against A. paragallinarum serovars A, B and C was developed in separated plates. One hundred Babcock 308 female layer chickens were randomly divided into five groups of 20 each. Groups 1, 2, 3 and 4 were different positive control groups of immunized chickens with commercial trivalent mineral oil vaccine, and prepared bacterins of Avibacterium paragallinarum serovars A (221), B (0222) and C (Modesto), respectively. The aim of this case report was to present clinical signs and radiographic features of one of the most important peripheral vestibular diseases in horse, and also present the treatment for this disease. Temporohyoid osteoarthropathy (THO) is caused by proliferation of the proximal stylohyoid bone and petrous temporal bone which finally results in ankylosis of the temporohyoid joint. Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus; GBS) causes serious damage to fish aquaculture worldwide. The present study reports S. agalactiae infection in climbing perch (Anabas testudineus) and Günther’s walking catfish (Clarias macrocephalus) polycultured in southern Thailand between 2011 and 2015. During the disease outbreak, a mortality rate of 10-40% was observed, affecting climbing perch and Günther’s walking catfish weighing from 60-150 g and 30-90 g, respectively. The infected fish exhibited a variety of symptoms typical of streptococcosis, including lethargy, exophthalmia, corneal opacity, ascites, haemorrhage and erratic swimming. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is one of the important RNA viruses that affects swine production worldwide. To better improve vaccine efficacy, understanding the molecular mechanisms and viral-host interaction is important to increase the knowledge of vaccine response. The objective of this study was to investigate the expression levels of miR-29a and IFN-γ in pigs that received modified live PRRSV vaccine. In the present study the effect of antimicrobial peptide K9CATH was evaluated in a murine model of mastitis by Staphylococcus aureus. Mastitis was induced with a clinical isolate of S. aureus in 20 female Balb/c mice at 7 to 10 days of lactation. Ten mice (treatment group) received daily intramammary infusions of 32 μg/50 μL K9CATH peptide, for 3 consecutive days, and 10 other mice (control group) received only 50 μL of saline solution. Results showed a significant reduction (P<0.01) in S. aureus CFU counts in the treatment group compared to the control group. These data suggest that the K9CATH peptide could be a potential candidate for the treatment of bovine mastitis.

Mastitis is a devastating disease of dairy animals in Pakistan that occurs in clinical and subclinical forms. Various bacterial pathogens are associated with mastitis and the susceptibility of these pathogens remains inconsistent to various antibacterial drugs. The objective of this study was to evaluate type 2 porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV)-based modified live vaccine in a herd with concurrent circulation of type 1 and type 2 PRRSV. Type 2 PRRSV-based modified live vaccine improved average daily gain by 48.24 grams/pig/day (631.17 grams/pig/day in the vaccinated group vs 582.93 grams/pig/day in the unvaccinated group; P < 0.05). Pathological examination indicated that the vaccination effectively reduced microscopic lung lesions compared with the control animals. The protection of this vaccine against type 1 and type 2 PRRSV provides clinical control of co-infection with both genotypes under field conditions.

This study was done to investigate the viability and effectiveness of cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene in DNA barcoding for identification of Chinese native chickens. Two sequences of the COI gene of 64 chickens of four Chinese native breeds (16 of each breed) were analyzed by amplification and sequencing. Results showed that the bar1 sequence of COI had lower polymorphism compared to bar2. Bar1 had 1 polymorphic site and 2 haplotypes, while bar2 had 4 polymorphic sites and 8 haplotypes. The objective of this study was to assess the relationship of temperature-humidity index (THI) with milk production, feed intake and feed efficiency of Holstein-Frisian cows in different seasons of the year. Five hundred and sixty three cows were monitored in spring, 557 cows in summer, 594 cows in autumn and 567 cows in winter, for a total period of two years. In contrast to the spring, autumn and winter periods, the summer period was characterized by heat stress conditions. Elephant endotheliotropic herpesviruses (EEHVs) can cause fatal hemorrhagic disease in elephants, especially young captive Asian elephants (Elephas maximus). Currently, seven EEHV types have been reported. In this study, EEHVs were examined in whole-blood samples derived from 56 captive Asian elephants from eight provinces in Thailand by nested PCR using primers specific to the viral DNA polymerase gene in an attempt to monitor EEHV elephant cases. After EEHV testing, one sample (1.78%) was positive and found to be closely related to EEHV4 with 99% amino acid identity. Although Asian elephant is listed among the endangered species, the number of populations is over the carrying capacity in some areas, resulting in human-elephant conflict, as well as African elephants. High aggression associated with musth and female reproductive pathology are observed in captive elephants. Thus, population and aggression management through reproductive control is an alternative method for mitigating these problems. To date, the interferon gamma (IFN-γ) assay has become an important diagnostic tool which is applied alternatively to define infection of intracellular pathogens. In this study, the molecular characteristics of IFN-γ in Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis), Hog deer (Axis porcinus), Sambar deer (Rusa unicolor) and Eld’s deer (Rucervus eldii) were determined. Among the cervid family, the analysis of IFN-γ cDNA sequences indicated 5 polymorphism nucleotide positions. Deduced IFN-γ amino acid compositions among the cervid group were negligibly different (98-100% homology). Preliminary quantification of IFN-γ mRNA expression in the cervidae by reverse transcription quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was demonstrated. …

An irregular, subcutaneous mass (2x3x2 cm) located between the first and second digits of the left hindlimb of a nine-year-old, male, captive capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) was biopsied. Microscopically, the mass scattered throughout the dermis. The neoplastic cells were arranged in solid-sheet patterns and comprised of pleomorphic histiocytic cells with pleomorphic nuclei and abundant eosinophillic cytoplasm. Mitotic figures were 2-3 cells/HPF. Numerous, multinucleated, giant cells, up to 10 nuclei/cells, were also prominently observed and found scattered throughout the mass. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were strongly positive for vimentin and ionized calcium-binding adaptor molecule 1 (Iba-1), while immunoreactivity for cytokeratin was negative. …

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is characterized by reproductive failure of sows and respiratory problems of nursery and growing pigs. Current management strategies mainly focus on preventing PRRS virus (PRRSV) infection through vaccination. However, the currently available modified live vaccines are not sufficient to eradicate the virus and do not provide complete immunity from infection. In search of agents that may be proven clinically effective against North American PRRSV (NA-PRRSV or US-PRRSV) infection, 42 natural herb hydrosols were purified and subjected to screening of their antiviral activity against two US-PRRSV strains in MARC-145 cells.
