Practice Problem: Patient falls can lead to an increased length of stay and potentially reduce the quality of life. In addition to serious injury, the patient and the hospital have a significant financial burden. PICOT: On a medical-surgical unit, does incorporating purposeful hourly rounding in the patient care routine compared to no purposeful rounding decrease patient fall rates over eight weeks?

Evidence: Of the 35 articles related to fall prevention and PHR, a final selection of eight articles met the criteria and were of high quality and evidence levels.

The practicum was completed at Central Ohio Primary Care Physicians (COPC), a large group of physician owned primary care practices. COPC would like to start a program for pediatric weight management utilizing their three pediatric Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs). The first step was collecting data to see any improvements that are needed from the current nutrition program. The second step was reviewing the literature on pediatric weight management to ensure the new program is evidenced-based. All steps were evaluated by COPC leadership and collaborated with internal company resources.

Background: Type 1 diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in childhood. Optimal school nurse and staff education is critical to creating a safe learning environment and influencing long term outcomes of students with type 1 diabetes. The purpose of this project was to develop a virtual continuing education diabetes management course for school health workers to improve their knowledge of diabetes management and evaluate the effectiveness of the learning platform.

Background: All patients are standardly kept NPO prior to surgery to minimize aspiration risks. Increased NPO times for infants has been found to lead to patient distress, hemodynamic instability, ketoacidosis and acid-base imbalances. Optimizing NPO times for young pediatric patients helps to decrease fasting times, which minimizes the safety concerns listed above.

In the field of rare diseases, progress in molecular diagnostics led to the recognition that variants linked to autosomal-dominant neurodegenerative diseases of later onset can, in the context of biallelic inheritance, cause devastating neurodevelopmental disorders and infantile or childhood-onset neurodegeneration. TOR1A-associated arthrogryposis multiplex congenita 5 (AMC5) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder arising from biallelic variants in TOR1A, a gene that in the heterozygous state is associated to torsion dystonia-1 (DYT1 or DYT-TOR1A), an early-onset dystonia with reduced penetrance. This project aimed to examine the current practice related to mental health and depression screenings in pediatric patients. The benefits of implementing screening in schools in identifying depression and suicide risks sooner were also considered. This project focused on the correlation between earlier mental health screening and identification of these mental health disorders earlier in the life of pediatric patients and suicide rates. Current, published literature notes mental health screening in the pediatric population in schools is an effective method to facilitate monitoring and early intervention in detecting a mental illness. Burns can be devasting trauma in the pediatric population, leading to lifelong physical and psychological pain and anxiety. Burn pain management is complicated and undertreated traditionally. The purpose of this scholarly project is to examine the use of virtual reality (VR) for distraction in pediatric patients who have experienced a burn to determine if VR improves pain management during painful procedures. A literature review revealed a gap in pain management in pediatric burn survivors with just traditional pharmacologic analgesia during painful procedures.
