Background: It is estimated that metastases from primary malignant neoplasms affect the spine around 30%-70% of the time. Many times, these osteolytic tumors will cause the degradation of the vertebrae, leaving patients in a tremendous amount of pain, disability, and dependence on opioids as analgesics. Microwave ablation (MWA) followed by vertebroplasties (VP) has been a developing treatment for such a condition; however, there are no systematic reviews or meta-analyses examining the method’s effectiveness thus far.
Purpose: This systematic review and meta-analysis analyzes the 4-week and 12-week outcomes of patients with metastatic spinal cancer treated with the combinatorial treatment …

Background: Lateral epicondylitis (LE), commonly referred to as tennis elbow, is characterized by micro-tears to the tendon origin that attaches to the outer portion of the elbow, with the extensor carpi radialis brevis being the most commonly affected tendon. It presents most often amongst manual workers and athletes that participate in repetitive movements. Patients may experience burning and aching sensations that can potentially radiate down to the wrist. Hyaluronic acid is a primary component of synovial fluid and has anti-inflammatory properties and also provides lubrication to joints. Prolotherapy involves injection of an irritant, most commonly dextrose, into the common extensor …

Introduction:
Hemivertebrae are rare congenital anomalies that can cause severe scoliosis requiring surgical correction. We aimed to determine whether severity of deformities is associated with more long-term surgical complications following surgical correction.
Methods:
We performed a retrospective, single-institution review on patients who underwent hemivertebrectomy and spinal fusion for congenital scoliosis between 2008-2020. We extracted pertinent data on demographics, radiographic parameters, operative details, and complication rates. Subgroup analyses were also done by complication severity, deformity complexity, and construct length.
Results:
In our series, 30 patients underwent hemivertebrectomy and fusion. Mean age was 9±4.2 years and there was 2:1 male preponderance, with …

Primary anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures are highly common and lead to a significant number of primary ACL reconstruction surgeries in the U.S.1. When choosing a graft, surgeons can pick between auto- and allografts2. An autograft can include a bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) graft, a hamstrings tendon (HT) graft, or a quadriceps tendon (QT) graft2. Currently, there is a wide range of research on graft types, but no paper compares all threes graft types directly. This review will compare literature to determine the morbidity associated with each graft type and determine which autograft is best for primary reconstruction.

Understanding The Importance Of Peak Bone Mass, Timothy Hereford, Alec Kellish, Julie Balch Samora, Louise Reid Nichols
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
Bone mass attained early in life is one of the most important determinants of lifelong skeletal health. Bone mineral content increases exponentially during childhood. In fact, 40%-60% of the total adult bone mass is accrued during puberty. By the end of the first 2 decades of life, peak bone mass has been reached. Between ages 20-50, bone mass has plateaued, but it continues to remodel. This is regulated by parathyroid hormone (PTH), vitamin D3, and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). After the age of 50, bone mass begins to decrease. The purpose of this paper is to review the importance …

Background/Introduction: Spinal fusion patients suffer significant acute post-operative pain, potentially leading to chronic pain. Opioids are commonly used for peri-operative pain management despite significant side effects. The thoracolumbar interfascial plane (TLIP) and erector spinae plane (ESP) block, alternative analgesic options with rare side effects, have proven to reduce pain and opioid consumption compared to standard non-block care. This study aimed to determine if a significant difference exists between block groups with multi- and single level laminectomy fusions in post-operative and discharge opioid consumption and length of stay. Materials/Methods: A retrospective review was performed via data query for lumbar laminectomy fusion …

Introduction As the demand for joint replacements continues to rise, optimizing patient outcomes and enhancing recovery have become paramount goals for orthopedic surgeons. Patients used to have minimal mobility following a Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) or Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) due to pain or the effects of sedation from anesthesia. This would lead to longer hospital stays, more complications, and higher opioid use.1 These surgeries also resulted in levels of blood loss that required transfusion therapy postoperatively.2 In recent years, there has been a paradigm shift in postoperative care for total joint arthroplasty (TJA), marked by significant advancements …

Bone Bulletin
Introduction
As the name might imply, “wide awake local anesthesia no tourniquet” (WALANT) is a surgical method to perform hand surgery using only a local anesthetic without the use of a tourniquet or any sedation and general anesthetics. The WALANT technique takes advantage of the vasoconstrictive effects of epinephrine combined with the local anesthetic effects of lidocaine to create a surgical field that does not require a tourniquet or general anesthesia.1 The main contributor is epinephrine, which decreases bleeding in the surgical field while also lengthening lidocaine’s absorption and effect.2 When first introduced to the surgical world, the …

The Role Of Psychological Readiness In Recovery From Acl Injury In Female Athletes, Samantha Meacock
Bone Bulletin
The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury is common in sports, with female athletes facing a disproportionately higher risk in comparison to male athletes.1 This susceptibility is the result of a complex relationship between various factors including anatomical, biomechanical, hormonal, neuromuscular, and environmental influences.2 In addition, the unique challenges that females face with respect to sports, violence, body image, and family planning create additional stressors that may further contribute to an increased risk for injury.3,4 Following ACL Reconstruction (ACLR) surgery, these gender discrepancies carry over into recovery as female athletes exhibit decreased rates of return to sport (RTS) …
Shoulder Arthroplasty In Patients With Inflammatory Arthritis: Preoperative And Perioperative Management Of Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drug Therapy, Daniel Kwak
Bone Bulletin
Introduction
Inflammatory arthritis is a debilitating systemic autoimmune and inflammatory disease that leads to joint damage, resulting in significant pain and disability. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common inflammatory arthritis typically associated with advanced arthritic changes of the glenohumeral joint as well as with rotator cuff tears.20 Since the introduction of disease modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) therapy, patients diagnosed with inflammatory rheumatic diseases have observed improvements in pain management and functional outcomes, alongside a reduction in the occurrence of upper limb arthroplasties.16 Nonetheless, total joint arthroplasty still remains common in the treatment of RA.8,14

Bone Bulletin
The development of stem cells holds the key to a revolutionary era in medicine, unlocking multisystem processes that will help restore normal function in the human body. Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that have the capability to give rise to cells of the same type, and from which new cells can arise through the process of differentiation. Several sources of stem cells can be broadly categorized into three main types: embryonic stem cells (ESC), adult stem cells, and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).1
