The Effect Of Platelet Rich Plasma Injection Vs. Steroid Injection On Plantar Fasciitis, Brian Nangle, Lasya Ampaty
The Effect Of Platelet Rich Plasma Injection Vs. Steroid Injection On Plantar Fasciitis, Brian Nangle, Lasya Ampaty
Physician Assistant Capstones, 2020-current
Objective: Assess the ability of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections to perform better than steroid injections in a population refractory to conservative treatment. Design: Systematic literature review. Methods: Searches were done in PubMed and Scopus, utilizing the terms platelet-rich plasma, steroid injection, and plantar fasciitis. The following limits and terms were used: published in the last 5 years, randomized control trial, used both VAS scale and AOFAS scale. Results: All 3 studies demonstrated that PRP injections allowed more pain reduction and improved stability when compared to steroid injections. Conclusion: PRP injections offer a well-tolerated, minimally invasive procedure for patients refractory to …
A New Treatment For Knee Osteoarthritis: Microfragmented Adipose Tissue Injections, Anne Bernot, Elizabeth Colantonio
A New Treatment For Knee Osteoarthritis: Microfragmented Adipose Tissue Injections, Anne Bernot, Elizabeth Colantonio
Physician Assistant Capstones, 2020-current
Objective: Assess the effectiveness of microfragmented adipose tissue injections at lowering knee injury and osteoarthritis outcome scores (KOOS) 6 months post treatment in patients aged 18-75 with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis compared to platelet rich plasma injections. Design: systematic literature review. Methods: A search of PubMed and Google Scholar was performed using the terms “Lipogems”, “adipose tissue injection”, “Micro Fragmented adipose tissue injections”, “Micro Fragmented adipose tissue and PRP”, and “MFAT vs. PRP knee”. The search was limited to randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in the past ten years. Results: Three randomized control trials (RCTs) met inclusion …
Reducing Adverse Event With Single And Double Bundle Acl Reconstruction Techniques, Alicia Hudalla, Caroline Casey
Reducing Adverse Event With Single And Double Bundle Acl Reconstruction Techniques, Alicia Hudalla, Caroline Casey
Physician Assistant Capstones, 2020-current
Objective: Assess whether athletes or individuals who live an active lifestyle or occupation between the ages of 18-40, who have had an ACL reconstruction done by either single bundle or double bundle repair to compare whether or not double-bundle ACL reconstructive surgery reduce rates of adverse events (re-tear rates, graft failure and laxity) post ACL reconstruction as compared to single-bundle ACL reconstruction. Design: Systemic literature review. Methods: Searches were done in PubMed, utilizing the terms “single bundle vs. double bundle ACL reconstruction.” The following limits and terms were used wrong ligament discussed, systematic reviews or review, not enough participants, 10+ …
Effect Of Mesenchymal Stem Cells On Osteoarthritis Of The Knee, Brendan Avery, Jessica Gray
Effect Of Mesenchymal Stem Cells On Osteoarthritis Of The Knee, Brendan Avery, Jessica Gray
Physician Assistant Capstones, 2020-current
Osteoarthritis of the knee is one the most common sources of chronic pain due to altered joint function.1 Current treatment modalities offer short term relief of symptoms but lack long term aid and regenerative properties.1 Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) offer regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties and can be collected from umbilical cord blood, adipose tissue, or bone marrow.4 The three studies included were all randomized controlled trials within the past 10 years that each utilized more than 30 participants who had a diagnosis of osteoarthritis and a mean age above 50 years old. MSCs were compared to corticosteroid …
Early Versus Delayed Rehabilitation After Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair, Abigail Chang, Jessica Dennis
Early Versus Delayed Rehabilitation After Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair, Abigail Chang, Jessica Dennis
Physician Assistant Capstones, 2016 to 2019
Objective: To determine how the timing of rehabilitation, early versus delayed, affects clinical results and tendon healing rates after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Design: Systematic literature review. Methods: Searches were done in PubMed, utilizing the terms arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, rehabilitation, early, and delayed. In PubMed the following filters and terms were used: published in the last 10 years, humans, randomized controlled trial, free full-text articles, and English. Results: The Keener et al study was included because it evaluated clinical results and tendon healing rates after arthroscopic repair using two distinct rehabilitation protocols, early versus delayed …
Effects Of Glucosamine Versus Chondroitin Sulfate In Reducing Joint Space Narrowing In Knee Osteoarthritis, Caroline Horton, Ashani Andrews
Effects Of Glucosamine Versus Chondroitin Sulfate In Reducing Joint Space Narrowing In Knee Osteoarthritis, Caroline Horton, Ashani Andrews
Physician Assistant Capstones, 2016 to 2019
Objective: To determine if over the counter supplements, chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine, in combination or alone, are effective in the treatment of joint space narrowing (JSN) in knee osteoarthritis.
Design: Systematic Literature Review
Methods: Database search of PubMed and MEDLINE using the search terms “glucosamine”, “chondroitin sulfate”, “osteoarthritis”, and joint space narrowing. Filters were implemented to include articles that only dealt with human subjects, that were published in 2000 or later, and were full-text. Articles were excluded if they were cohort studies, reviews, non-English papers, or had pain as the only outcome.
Results: Sawitzke et al.primary outcomes revealed no …
Bupivacaine Vs. Ropivacaine: Looking At The Chondrotoxic Effects Of Intraarticular Anesthetics In Osteoarthritic Joints, Sarah Burke, Lauren Price
Bupivacaine Vs. Ropivacaine: Looking At The Chondrotoxic Effects Of Intraarticular Anesthetics In Osteoarthritic Joints, Sarah Burke, Lauren Price
Physician Assistant Capstones, 2016 to 2019
Objectives: Intraarticular injections of corticosteroids used in combination with local anesthetics are commonly used in orthopedic practice for osteoarthritic pain relief. Many orthopedists question whether these anesthetics have chondrotoxic effects on human articular cartilage. The purpose of this meta- analysis is to examine the chondrotoxic effects of local anesthetics on osteoarthritic human articular cartilage and to determine whether ropivacaine has fewer chondrotoxic effects than bupivacaine.
Methods: Studies were found using PubMed with the search terms, “Ropivacaine,” “Bupivacaine,” and “Chondrocytes.” Initially 20 studies were found. Several studies were eliminated using the following excluding factors: human studies, published in last 10 years, …
Vitamin D Supplementation: Preventing Fractures, Courtney L. Carn, Michael S. Doherty
Vitamin D Supplementation: Preventing Fractures, Courtney L. Carn, Michael S. Doherty
Physician Assistant Capstones, 2016 to 2019
Objective: To assess the ability of vitamin D supplementation in preventing musculoskeletal fractures. Methods: Systematic literature review using Google Scholar search terms “vitamin D supplementation” and “preventing hip fractures” from 2006-2015. Only RCTs, meta-analysis, and clinical guidelines were included. Results: Our search resulted in one meta-analysis and two randomized controlled trials. Conclusion: The summation of our investigation into vitamin D deficiency and the presence of musculoskeletal fractures has proven to be relatively inconclusive. The resulting data from our three studies did not provide any definitive proof that improved vitamin D levels correlates with better bone health.
