Background. Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a rare disorder caused by variations in collagen. Clinical manifestations include multiple fractures, short stature, scoliosis, blue sclera, hearing loss, and opalescent teeth. Patients often need many different medical providers frequently, which may place financial burdens on families. This study sought to identify and understand barriers to care for children with OI.
Methods. We utilized an Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved survey for primary caregivers of children with OI. Questions included demographic data, type of health insurance, history of and reasons for insurance denials, access to multidisciplinary OI care, and travel to receive OI care. The …

Background. Research output among orthopaedic surgery applicants remains an important factor in the orthopaedic surgery residency selection process. However, there is limited literature comparing objective measures such as research productivity across different types of orthopaedic surgery applicants. We aim to determine if students who match at their home programs have significantly different research productivity and, secondarily, Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) membership rates, compared to those who match at external programs.
Methods. This study was conducted in April 2024. A list of orthopaedic surgery residents was acquired from publicly available websites using a Python script. Programs were stratified into four geographic …
Reliability Of T2-Weighted Mri Volumetric Measurements For Knee Effusion Assessment Following Acl Injury: An Intra-Rater And Inter-Rater Study, Reginald Chinweze, Neal Weldon, Matthew A. Tao, Melissa Manzer, Elizabeth Wellsandt
Reliability Of T2-Weighted Mri Volumetric Measurements For Knee Effusion Assessment Following Acl Injury: An Intra-Rater And Inter-Rater Study, Reginald Chinweze, Neal Weldon, Matthew A. Tao, Melissa Manzer, Elizabeth Wellsandt
Posters and Presentations: Physical Therapy
Purpose: Knee effusion after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and reconstruction is associated with quadriceps dysfunction and may contribute to early osteoarthritis development. This study was subsequently designed to determine the intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of our method for volumetric quantitative measurements of knee effusion using T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after ACL injury and reconstruction.
Methods: MRIs of 10 ACL-injured knees and 10 uninjured knees from participants aged 15-35 years old were included. Exclusion criteria included previous knee injury/surgery, inflammatory disease, BMI >30 kg/m2, and concomitant grade III ligament tears. Two independent raters analyzed effusion volumes using custom MATLAB …

Seasonal Variation Of Hip Fractures In Patients With Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, Steven D. Curry, Pooja M. Varman, Alessandro Carotenuto, Justin C. Siebler, Jonathan L. Hatch
Graduate Medical Education Research Journal
Introduction: Seasonal variation of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) presentation has been reported, with higher rates of presentation in months associated with times of lower serum vitamin D levels. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between the timing of hip fracture in patients with BPPV.
Methods: A retrospective review (2013 to 2019) of adult patients was performed at a tertiary care academic center to identify patients with hip fracture due to ground level fall (ICD-10 code S72) and a previously established diagnosis of vestibular disorder (ICD-10 codes H81-83, A88.1, and R42). Included patients were …
The Rotator Cuff Tendon-To-Bone Interface: Maturation, Aging, And 3d Bioprinting For Regeneration, Xiping Jiang
The Rotator Cuff Tendon-To-Bone Interface: Maturation, Aging, And 3d Bioprinting For Regeneration, Xiping Jiang
Theses & Dissertations
Rotator cuff tendon injuries often occur at the tendon-to-bone interface (i.e., enthesis) area with a high prevalence for the elderly population. In addition, regeneration of the gradient structure of the enthesis is still a significant clinical challenge. Our studies aim to identify the histological, molecular, and biomechanical alterations of the rotator cuff enthesis with maturation and aging, and develop a novel therapeutic method using three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting technique to regenerate a functional enthesis. Striking variations of the entheses were observed both histologically and biomechanically during the maturation process. The histological features did not show many differences at the insertion site …
Postoperative Outcomes Of Hip Fracture Surgery In Geriatric Patients On Clopidogrel Or Warfarin At The Time Of Surgery, Josh Locker, Elizabeth Lyden, Justin Siebler
Postoperative Outcomes Of Hip Fracture Surgery In Geriatric Patients On Clopidogrel Or Warfarin At The Time Of Surgery, Josh Locker, Elizabeth Lyden, Justin Siebler
Graduate Medical Education Research Journal
BACKGROUND: The purpose of our study is to evaluate if surgical intervention in the setting of an elevated INR or continued use of clopidogrel lead to elevated post-operative mortality and/or morbidity compared to INR reversal or surgical delay.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 1,007 patients age > 55 undergoing hip fracture fixation at our institution over a 10 year span. We placed patients into four groups based upon their anticoagulation status at the time of surgery. Descriptive statistics were utilized to evaluate for differences in mortality rates, blood loss, time to surgery, and wound complications.
RESULTS: Comorbid conditions occurred at a higher …
Towards An In Vitro Model Of Testing Osteoblast Cellular Function In Contact With Various Surfaces, Raheleh Miralami
Towards An In Vitro Model Of Testing Osteoblast Cellular Function In Contact With Various Surfaces, Raheleh Miralami
Theses & Dissertations
Past studies have shown that the success of total joint replacements depends on the biocompatibility of orthopaedic materials, which can be improved by modifying the implant surface. However, the exact roles of these modifications and their effective mechanisms are poorly understood. The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a model system to investigate the impact of nano-structured surfaces, produced by the ion beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) technique, on biomarkers of osteointegration using an in vitro model. The IBAD technique was employed to deposit zirconium oxide (ZrO2), Titanium oxide (TiO2), and Titanium (Ti) nano-films on …
Comparing Biocompatibility Of Ibad-Produced Nano-Films Of Titanium Oxide With Orthopaedic Grade Titanium, Raheleh Miralami
Comparing Biocompatibility Of Ibad-Produced Nano-Films Of Titanium Oxide With Orthopaedic Grade Titanium, Raheleh Miralami
Posters and Presentations: Orthopaedic Surgery & Rehab
Titanium (Ti) is the material of choice for orthopaedic applications because it is biocompatible and encourages osteoblast growth. The present study was devised to compare the osteoblast functions on nano-crystalline titanium oxide films produced by an ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) technique with the osteoblast functions on micro-crystalline orthopaedic-grade titanium. To characterize the biocompatibility of these surfaces, we have studied cell adhesion, growth, and differentiation on different samples. Cell responses to surfaces were examined using the human osteosarcoma cell line (SAOS-2) with osteoblastic properties. To compare cell adhesion and growth, DAPI-stained nuclei were counted using ImageJ and Metamorph software. Immunofluorescence …
