Lung Carbon Dioxide Elimination Corralates With Physiologic Dead Space Volume During Mechanical Ventilatory Support, Murat Sungur, Muhammed Güven Jan 2001

Lung Carbon Dioxide Elimination Corralates With Physiologic Dead Space Volume During Mechanical Ventilatory Support, Murat Sungur, Muhammed Güven

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Increased mean airway pressure (Paw) predisposes to increased alveolar dead space volume and, hence, physiologic dead space volume (V{Dphys}. This is the result of overdistending alveoli, converting Zone 2 and Zone 3 units to Zone 1 units. Lung carbon dioxide elimination (LCO_2) is a reflection of pulmonary capillary blood flow. It is hypothesized that as Zone 1 units form or V{Dphys} increases, LCO_2 decreases proportionately and eventually PaCO_2 increases. The purpose of this study is to determine if LCO_2 correlates with V{Dphys} during mechanical ventilation. Six sheep (66.3 ± 6.5 kg), anesthetized with sodium thiopental and paralyzed using pancronium, had …

Refluxing units were known to be present by voiding cysto‐urethrography (within 1 year, mean …

Genetic Variation And Disease In The Roma (Gypsies), David J. Gresham Jan 2001

Genetic Variation And Disease In The Roma (Gypsies), David J. Gresham

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The Roma (Gypsies) are a European people composed of a mosaic of culturally heterogeneous populations. Linguistic analyses point to their origins in the Indian subcontinent. Cultural diversity in extant Romani populations suggests that they are descended from a mixture of Indian populations. Previous population genetic studies of the Roma have supported this claim by demonstrating the genetic heterogeneity of Romani populations. More recently, medical genetic research has detected identical founder mutations in separated Romani populations, which provides evidence of their relatedness. In this thesis, the genetic heritage of the Roma and its significance for genetic disease and research is investigated. …

Titrating And Evaluating Multiple Drug Regimens Within Subjects, Margaret Shih Jan 2001

Titrating And Evaluating Multiple Drug Regimens Within Subjects, Margaret Shih

Theses and Dissertations

The dosing of combination therapies is commonly undertaken empirically by practicing physicians, and there is a lack of a coherent algorithm to approach the problem of combination dosing. Current methods of evaluating multiple drug combinations in clinical trials generally do not provide information regarding the location of more effective dosages when the combination is not found to differ from the standard, even though the absence of a difference does not necessarily mean the new combination is ineffective. Additionally, if a new combination is found to be more effective, often a large proportion of the subjects has not benefited from the …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The antioxidant activities of water, ethanol, and ether extracts of the leaves of Cydonia vulgaris Pers. were determined by the thiocyanate method. The antioxidant activity of water extract was increased with the increasing amount of extract (200 µg-1000µg) added to the linoleic acid emulsion. Ether extract was the most effective antioxidant among the extracts. Like antioxidant activity, the reducing power of water extract was concentration dependent. However, ethanol extract was the highest in reducing power, and ether extract was the lowest. The results obtained in the present study indicate that the leaves of Cydonia vulgaris are a potential source of …

Difficulties Associated With The Study Of Action Potential After-Potentials In Rat Cultured Sensory Neurones, Ahmet Ayar, Roderick H. Scott Jan 2001

Difficulties Associated With The Study Of Action Potential After-Potentials In Rat Cultured Sensory Neurones, Ahmet Ayar, Roderick H. Scott

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

We investigated the properties of action potential after-potentials in cultured dorsal root ganglion neurones from neonatal rats using the whole cell patch clamp technique. The aims of this study were to characterize after-potentials and investigate the possible influences of Ca^{2+}-induced Ca^{2+}release (CICR) on neuronal excitability. The reversal potentials of action potential after-depolarizations and after-hyperpolarizations were estimated. Although evidence for both Ca^{2+}-activated chloride and potassium conductances was obtained, the data indicated that the after-potentials were contaminatied by a variety of distinct ionic events. Apamin was used to attenuate potassium conductances and appeared to enhance the after-depolarizations due to Ca^{2+}-activated chloride conductances. …
