Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the importance of the apoptotic activity of squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix and Bcl-2 expression. Materials and Methods: Twenty-seven women with cervical squamous cell carcinoma, admitted to our unit between 1996 and 1998, were reviewed. Patients were classified according to staging and grading systems. Bcl-2 protein material was investigated by immunohistochemistry (streptoavidin, biotine, alkaline phosphatase technique). Results: After immunohistochemical staining, 12 of the 27 cases stained positively (44%). There was a correlation between the grade and staining percentage. Many risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD) have been reported to date. Recently, it has been shown that elevations in homocysteine (Hcy) levels may contribute to the development of coronary heart diseases. In this study, our aim was to determine the relation of Hcy levels and other risk factors in CHD. Serum Hcy, lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen, cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL and LDL levels were measured in 51 male patients, diagnosed with CHD with negative T elevations in electrocardiograms, and in 20 healthy males. QSAR analysis of some 5- or 6-methyl-2-substituted benzoxazoles/ benzimidazoles was studied for the antifungal activity against C. albicans using Hansch analysis. Prediction for the lead optimization in this QSAR analysis was described by the description of various hydrophobic, electronic, steric and structural parameters related to positions R_1, R_2, R_5, R_6, X, Y. The cross-validation method was also applied to the data set in order to prove the predictive power by using the BILIN statistical software. We investigated whether rCBF values obtained with the SPECT technique are different in schizophrenics with predominantly positive or negative symptoms and assessed the biological underpinnings of psychotic phenomena, which has been done repeatedly in the past, with somewhat varied results. Twenty-nine schizophrenic patients were examined to investigate the relationship between regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and psychopathology according to SANS, SAPS and BPRS scores. Using the Tc-99m HMPAO SPECT method at rest, rCBF was assessed in 15 patients with predominantly positive (group I) and 14 with predominantly negative (group II) symptoms. To determine the effects of cigarette smoking on blood antioxidant status and lipid peroxidation, 16 healthy male current smokers (CS) and 16 healthy male non-smokers (NS) serving as controls were studied. CS were divided into two groups: short-term smokers (STS) 35.4 ± 5.8 years of age (mean±SD), and long-term smokers (LTS) 60.9 ± 4.9 years of age. The Roma (Gypsies) are a European people composed of a mosaic of culturally heterogeneous populations. Linguistic analyses point to their origins in the Indian subcontinent. Cultural diversity in extant Romani populations suggests that they are descended from a mixture of Indian populations. Previous population genetic studies of the Roma have supported this claim by demonstrating the genetic heterogeneity of Romani populations. More recently, medical genetic research has detected identical founder mutations in separated Romani populations, which provides evidence of their relatedness. In this thesis, the genetic heritage of the Roma and its significance for genetic disease and research is investigated. …

Objective To report the development and testing of a device for the noninvasive diagnosis of vesico‐ureteric reflux (VUR) which avoids the need for urethral catheterization (currently required to reliably determine the presence of VUR), and which thus avoids the anxiety of parents and patients that causes many families to refuse such evaluation.

Patients and methods Fifty‐four children (49 girls and five boys, mean age 7.2 years, range 4–14) previously evaluated as having VUR volunteered to participate; no child was symptomatic at the time of the study.
