Chronic inflammatory gingival enlargement (CIGE) occasionally exhibits some similarities with hemangioma (Hm) by means of the clinical and histopathological features of gingiva. When compared with hemangioma, CIGE is more frequently encountered by the dental profession. However, Hm is rarely seen on gingiva and it has a non-inflammatory nature and mostly congenital origin. The present paper reports the clinic and histopathologic features of CIGE and Hm of gingiva in patients referred to our clinic suffering primarily from gingival overgrowth. The cortical thickness of the mandible (CTM) and its bone mineral density may be affected by tooth extraction. There is little knowledge of how the number of teeth in the mandible affect the cortical thickness and bone mineral density of the mandible in 2 different parts. From prokaryotes to eukaryotes or from invertebrates to vertebrates, all organisms have developed various adaptive mechanisms to survive within a wide range of growth temperatures. An important part of the cold adaptation mechanism occurs at the level of the cytoplasmic membrane. Cold shock affects the membrane composition and organisation to maintain the optimum membrane function. Cold shock also affects cell division. The temperature downshift results in a growth lag. During the lag phase the organism changes the composition of the cytoplasmic membrane and synthesis sets of specific proteins called cold shock proteins or cold induced proteins.

Fine Structural Demonstration Of Anionic Sites On Streptococcal And Staphylococcal Envelopes By Cationic Dyes, Yosun Mater, Sabi̇re Karaçali

Anionic sites on bacterial envelopes of Streptococcus \beta-haemolyticus and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 P were investigated on materials fixed with Karnovsky fixative containing the cationic dyes ruthenium red (RR) or alcian blue (AB). Electron dense granules and short fibrils were found to be irregularly distributed around the cells on the glycocalyces of both genera. An electron dense stained reaction with RR or AB on the cell membrane and glycocalyx indicates the presence of rich anionic sites on these structures. Electron microscopic observations demonstrate that anionic sites in the glycocalyx are responsible for the adherence phenomenon during the formation of microcolonies. …

Aim: To investigate the effects of oral L-glutamine, insulin and laxative on the bacterial population of intestinal lumen and on bacterial translocation in acute pancreatitis. The aim of this study was to investigate the systemic humoral and cell-mediated immune system parameters, and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) immunoreactivity in non-convulsive absence epilepsy and pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)- induced generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Carnitine is a major molecule which plays a great role in the transfer of long chain fatty acids into the mitochondrion. Measurement of its total and free forms is essential in the clinical evaluation of carnitine deficiency that can arise from disorders either primarily or secondarily. The effect of cigarette smoking on the fractal organisation of the heartbeat regulating system was investigated by power spectral analysis. The heart rate variability (HRV) signal was obtained from the consecutive RR intervals of ECG. Power law behaviour of 1/f\beta type was studied to assess the fractal organisation of the heartbeat. Corticosteroids, widely used in the treatment of collagen tissue diseases, increase the number of neutrophils and decrease the total numbers of lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils. In addition, corticosteroids alter important functional activities of both lymphocytes and monocytes. They suppress the bactericidial activities of phagocytes. In this manner, the resistance to infections is reduced. Cytotoxic drugs can have profound effects on the production and function of both phagocyte cells and lymphocytes. Caudate hemorrhage is a rare stroke syndrome that accounts for only 3-7% of all primary intracerebral hematomas. In this study, we evaluated eight patients with isolated caudate nucleus hemorrhage for their clinical presentation and neurological findings. Material and methods: Eight patients, who were admitted to our department with isolated caudate nucleus hemorrhage, were evaluated for their clinical presentation and present risk factor findings on neurological examination and prognosis. Materials and Methods: 24 male Wistar albino rats were included in this study. The rats were divided into two groups. A 4 cm midline laparatomy was performed after ketamine HCl anesthesia. Aims: Rates of certain histopathologic features were evaluated in hepatitis C and in hepatitis B materials and analyzed statistically in a Turkish population. Method: The presence of lymphoid aggregate, steatosis, ductal lesions, sinusoidal inflammation and portal iron deposition were investigated in 80 hepatitis C and 104 hepatitis B specimens and evaluated using the chi-square test and Fisher's exact test. Pan Band T cell markers were used for lymphoid aggregate analysis. P53 and PCNA were applied for the possible impact of steatosis on cell biology. In this study, the STR system HumF13B polymorphism and forensic efficiency values were investigated in a population sample from the Çukurova region. The F13B phenotypes were analysed using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) following a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and were visualised by silver staining. Allele frequencies were calculated by the gene counting method. Forensic efficiency values were estimated using the obtained gene frequencies of F13B. In this population sample, a total of five alleles, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 of F13B, were observed. The thalamus is one of the most vulnerable areas for intracerebral hemorrhages. In this study, we investigated the parameters of thalamic hemorrhage such as risk factors, initial complaints, neurologic findings and the prognostic effects of the presence or absence of ventricular penetration, as well as the volume and size of hematoma. This prospective randomized clinical study was designed to assess and compare the effects of normothermic and hypothermic nonpulsative cardiopulmonary bypass in patients with mitral valve replacement. Forty patients undergoing elective mitral valve replacement were randomly divided into two groups according to the temperature of perfusion. Group N (15 patients) underwent normothermic cardiopulmonary perfusion and Group H (25 patients) underwent hypothermic cardiopulmonary perfusion. A prospective, observational study was carried out to assess the efficacy of Large Loop Excision of the Transformation Zone (LLETZ) as an outpatient procedure during the first visit of patients with abnormal cervical smears. One hundred and seven women were treated with LLETZ under local anaesthesia as an outpatient procedure at their first visit. All patients were followed up routinely with colposcopy, cytology, and also histology where appropriate for at least 6 months. Objective: To evaluate the serum triglyceride and lipoprotein-cholesterol levels in subjects with and without luteal phase defect. Method: Early follicular and midluteal phase serum triglycerides, lipoprotein-cholesterol and progesterone levels were assessed in 19 subjects with and in 73 subjects without luteal phase defect. The criterion for diagnosis of luteal phase defect was histological development of endometrium delayed for more than 2 days according to the chronological day. The data were analyzed by paired and unpaired t tests, Chi-square test and correlation analysis. Selecting the individually suitable form of and location for the major connectors in partially edentulous patients is important. The purpose of classifying removable partial dentures (RPDs) is to simplify identification. Classification also allows for a longitudinal comparison of various classes of RPDs as well as the determination of whether the teaching of RPD design is consistent with the relative frequencies of RPD use. This study surveyed the various types of RPDs being fabricated in a dental laboratory and compared those findings with the data from a previous study.
