In this study, the tracheal tissues of rats inhaling cigarette smoke passively during different periods were examined by light and electron microscopy. Malonaldehyde, erythrocyte catalase and arginase levels were also measured. Three groups were formed and a total of 15 Wistar male rats weighing 200-250 g were used. Rats assigned to the first and second groups were made to inhale cigarette smoke for 30 and 60 minutes respectively for a total of 3 months. The aims of this study were to determine the role of interstitial and glomerular myofibroblasts in the progression of various glomerulonephritis, and to assess the value of myofibroblasts in determining long-term renal outcome. The biopsy specimens of 42 primary glomerulonephritis cases were reviewed and stained immunohistochemically with alpha smooth muscle actin antibody. The serum creatine level was compared to the pathological changes. The interstitial alpha smooth muscle actin staining correlated with the serum creatine level at the time of biopsy. The stapedial artery is a rare anomaly in man. However, an undetected persistence of the artery may cause problems during middle ear surgery. The studies on its course are inadequate. In this study, the effects of sulfur dioxide (SO_2) ,a common pollutant in urban air, on t-butyl hydroperoxide-induced oxidative stress in rat lung tissues were examined. Ten young rats and 10 adult rats were exposed to SO_2 while another 10 young rats and 10 adult rats made up the control groups. Ten ppm SO_2 was administered to the animals of the SO_2 groups in an exposure chamber for one hour a day every day for 6 weeks. In Vivo Interaction Between Cadmium And Essential Trace Elements Copper And Zinc In Rats, H. Hakan Aydin, Canan Çoker, Bi̇ltan Ersöz

The complex in vivo interaction between Cd, a toxic metal and essential trace elements, mainly Zn and Cu, has not been elucidated yet. The objective being the elucidation of this interrelationship, Cd was subcutaneously administered as CdCI_2 (1 mg/kg/day) for 5 consecutive days to Swiss albino male rats (n=10). After 5 days, the rats were decapitated. Cd, Zn and Cu levels were estimated in hepatic, renal, cardiac and skeletal muscle specimens. Cd was found to be significantly elevated in all tissues (p< 0.001). Zn was increased in hepatic and renal tissues (p< 0.001 and p< 0.05) compared to the controls. Cu was also significantly increased in these tissues. Myocardial and skeletal muscle tissues also manifested a significant increase in Cu and Zn in this group. It is concluded that Cd administration alters the Zn and Cu status in vivo. However, the mechanism underlying the interactions between toxic and essential elements should be further investigated.

Aim: We investigated the role of c-erb-B2, hormone receptors and cathepsin D in breast carcinoma progression and their correlation with each other. Methods: Forty-six breast carcinoma patients, operated on in the deparment of surgery and diagnosed in the pathology department, were classified according to their histopathological characteristics; the results of immunostaining with estrogen and progesterone receptors, c-erb-B2 and cathepsin-D were correlated with the stage and the disease-free survival of the patients. Purpose: The aim of this study was to observe the effects of and compliance with an intensive insulin regimen in preadolescent children with type-1 diabetes. Workers in the tobacco industry are exposed to tobacco dust, which has allergenic and irritative effects on airways. In this study, our aim was to determine whether tobacco dust has any effect on lung functions and volumes. A questionnaire about working conditions was applied to 448 workers, some of which had been exposed to tobacco dust while others had not, and all workers underwent measurements of spirometric flow and volume. Forty-eight upper limbs were dissected in order to study the courses and relations of the brachial plexus nerves in the axilla. Connections between the musculocutaneous and median nerves were found in five arms. There was a suprascapular nerve arising from the union of C4 and C5 directly in one cadaver. A branch from the median nerve extending to the brachial artery was determined. In one of the cadavers the radial nerve arose only from the union of posterior divisions of the inferior and middle trunks.

The involvement of both the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and central nervous system (CNS) in multiple sclerosis is a seldom encountered combination in neurology clinics. In this report, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural techniques were used to analyse the disease course of a patient exhibiting involvement of both systems. In 1980, a 44-year-old man was admitted to our clinic with progressive weakness and decreased sensation of the right lower extremity, and sensory abnormality exhibiting stocking distribution. This thesis contributes to the Human Genome Project by adding detail to the physical and genetic maps of the human genome, and by identifying a strong candidate gene for a form of distal myopathy. Genomic clones for the human skeletal muscle genes slow troponin (TNN/1), alpha actin (ACTA1), and (3-tropomyosin (TPM2) were isolated for use in the fluorescent in situ hybridisation localisation of these genes on the cytogenetic map of the human genome. The localisation of these genes made them potential candidates for inherited skeletal muscle diseases, including the muscular dystrophies investigated here. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is closely associated with nasopharyngcal carcinoma (NPC). The role(s) of EBV in NPC remains unclear but antibodies to two EBV proteins namely the viral capsid antigen (VCA) and early antigen (EA), are clinically useful diagnostic markers of NPC. The NPC scenario in Malaysia has been based on studies done on West Malaysian patients but not much has been described for NPC in Sarawak, East Malaysia. In the present study involving patients with bone metastases arising from prostate cancer, we measured urinary deoxypyridinoline (DPD) as a marker of collagen breakdown activity, serum total and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase activities and serum prostate specific antigen (PSA). This study included 20 patients with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and 23 patients with carcinoma, 11 of had with bone metastases. DPD excretion in urine was significantly greater in prostate cancer patients with bone metastasis than in those with localised prostate cancer or BPH (p0.05). The aim of the study was to establish apolipoprotein E genotype in the patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) who are inhabitants of the north-east of Turkey. The study involved 106 patients (70 male, 36 female; ages ranging from 37 to 69 years) who are local people and were angiocardiographically diagnosed for CHD. The risk factors such as smoking, alcohol and obesity were determined and serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL and HDL were measured in the subjects. This study was designed to determine the prevalence of osteopathy in diabetic patients, who are at risk of developing osteopathy, and clarify the relationship between osteopathy and other complications of diabetes mellitus. Thirty-four type I and 66 type II diabetic patients admitted to the endocrinology clinic between 1996 and 1997 and 30 nondiabetic subjects as a control group were studied. Several reports have focused on either the increased prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection or lack of association in patients with rosacea. In this study, 19 patients with rosacea and 38 healthy controls were investigated for seropositivity to Helicobacter pylori by ELISA and the effects of eradication treatment on clinical improvement were monitored. Statistical analysis was performed using Student's t test, Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon signed ranks test, McNemar's test, and chi-squared and correlation tests. No correlation was detected between the degree of severity of disease and Helicobacter pylori positivity. Our results suggest that Helicobacter pylori may be an aggravating factor, …

The microbiologic lid flora evaluations of 117 patients with anterior blepharitis were compared with those of 52 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. The sampled bacterial cultures were identified according to standard conventional techniques and fatty acid profiles by the Microbial Identification System (MIS). Chi-square and difference between two percentage Z tests were used for the statistical analyses. The most commonly isolated organisms were Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Propionibacterium acnes and mixed skin flora (diphtheroid rods, Neisseria spp. and Streptococcus viridans). Recently tuberculosis has shown a speedy worldwide spread. The incidence of drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis is increasing in almost all industrialized and developing countries. The epidemiology of multiple drug resistance varies in different regions and countries. The aim of this study was to determine the activities of first-line (isoniazid, rifampin, ethambutol and streptomycin) and second-line (kanamycin, para-aminosalicylic acid, ethionamide and capreomycin) antituberculosis drugs on 100 various clinical isolates of M. tuberculosis. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the importance of the apoptotic activity of squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix and Bcl-2 expression. Materials and Methods: Twenty-seven women with cervical squamous cell carcinoma, admitted to our unit between 1996 and 1998, were reviewed. Patients were classified according to staging and grading systems. Bcl-2 protein material was investigated by immunohistochemistry (streptoavidin, biotine, alkaline phosphatase technique). Results: After immunohistochemical staining, 12 of the 27 cases stained positively (44%). There was a correlation between the grade and staining percentage.
