Automatic Generation And Novel Validation Of Patient-Specific, Anatomically Inclusive Scoliosis Models For Biomechanics-Informed Surgical Planning, Austin Tapp, Michel Audette, James Bennett

College of Engineering & Technology (Batten) Posters

Scoliosis is an abnormal spinal curvature of greater than 10 degrees. Severe scoliotic deformities are addressed with highly invasive procedures: anterior or posterior spinal fusion approaches. This invasiveness is due, in part, to the constraints of current surgical planning, which utilizes computed tomography (CT) scans unable to discern spinal ligaments that are dissected to make the spine sufficiently compliant for correction. If localization of ligaments and soft tissues were achieved pre-operatively, corrective procedures could become safer and more efficient by using finite element (FE) biomechanical simulations to determine decreased incidences of ligament releases. This research aims to achieve ligament localization …

Time To First Blood Glucose Determination And Administration Of Intravenous Glucose At Birth In Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants, Jihan Esmail, Ramasubbareddy Dhanireddy Md

Longitudinal Scholar's Project

Background: Extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants are prone to hypoglycemia unless intravenous glucose is administered within an hour (golden hour) of life. These infants often require resuscitation at birth, but monitoring and intervention for hypoglycemia may be delayed.

Objectives: (1) Study the time to first blood glucose determination and IV glucose administration at birth in ELBW infants, (2) determine the incidence of hypoglycemia, <47mg/dl, and severe hypoglycemia, <40mg/dl, at admission, (3) determine risk factors for hypoglycemia, and (4) compare clinical outcomes at discharge between hypoglycemic and euglycemic infants.

Methods: 244 ELBW (≤1000g birth weight) infants born during Jan 2017- Feb 2020 at the Regional One Health NICU, Memphis, TN were included in the study. Data collected included maternal and infant clinical, demographic, and outcomes …

Trunk Kinematics Using Musculoskeletal Modeling During Range Of Motion Tasks, Maryam Moeini, Ruth M. Higgins, Hunter Bennett, Stacie Ringleb

College of Health Sciences Posters

A spine model can be used to predict post-spinal fusion motion needed to perform physical activities in individuals with scoliosis. Full body lumbar spine (FBLS) model (Raabi et al., 2016) allows for modeling lumbar spine and pelvis movement and was validated for jogging. However, like other existing adult spine models, FBLS model does not allow for a motion providing thoracic and spine. Purpose: To adapt the FBLS model for simulating thoracic, lumbar and pelvis motion during trunk rotation in all 3 planes of motion. Methods: Since T12-L1 in FBLS model is designed as a dependent joint (axial rotation analogous to …

Long-Term Impacts Of Acute Stressor Exposure On Locus Coeruleus Function And Anxiety-Like Behavior In Rats, Olga Borodovitsyna

Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Stress is a physiological state characterized by behavioral arousal that occurs during exposure to harmful or threatening stimuli, and usually facilitates an adaptive behavioral response. The persistence of stress sometimes causes it to become maladaptive, potentially contributing to disease development, including physiological complications with altered neuroendocrine signaling and impaired function of organ systems, and psychological conditions including depression and anxiety. Anxiety disorders in particular are associated with a history of stress and are the most common class of mental disorders, with a lifetime prevalence of 33.7% in the general population. The locus coeruleus (LC) is a major node in the …

A High-Throughput Approach To Characterizing Arv1 On The Regulation Of Lipid Homeostasis Uncovers A Novel Interaction With Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor, Nicholas Anthony Wachowski

Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Acyl-CoA cholesterol acyl transferase related enzyme-2 required for viability 1 (ARV1) was first recognized in Saccharomyces cerevisiae in a study done in 2000 by Tinkelenberg et al. In yeast, the deletion of ARV1 results in numerous defects including abnormal sterol trafficking [1], the reduction of sphingolipid metabolism [2], synthesis of glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor [3], ER stress [4], and hypersensitivity of fatty acids leading to lipoapoptosis [5]. Arv1 germline deletion in mice displayed a lean phenotype with increased energy [6]. In humans, ARV1 mutations lead to epileptic encephalopathy [7].

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) consists of simple steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis …

Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects

Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) are cells derived from 5-day human embryos and are self-renewing cell lines that change into any type of cell in the body, a trait called pluripotency. hESCs have almost unlimited clinical and medical research potential. Despite the great therapeutic promise of hESC research, it comes with a controversial ethical debate due to its involvement with the destruction of the human embryo. The central argument revolves around the question of whether or not these human embryos should be ascribed equal moral status to fully developed humans. This thesis aims to analyze the origin and advancements of …

Management Of Paediatric Intracranial Ependymoma, Syeda Kubra Kishwar Jafri, Saqib Kamran Bakhshi, Muhammad Shahzad Shamim

Section of Neurosurgery

Intracranial ependymoma are relatively common paediatric brain tumours, but their eloquent location and high recurrence rate pose a significant challenge. Gross total resection or maximum safe resection followed by adjuvant radiotherapy are currently the standard recommended treatment, although there is still nearly 50% recurrence risk at 5 years. Chemotherapy has shown some promising results after recent advances in molecular understanding of ependymomas, but needs further evaluation before it could be added to the treatment regime.

Periprocedural And In-Hospital Outcomes Among Percutaneous Coronary Intervention In Saphenous Vein Graft: A Retrospective Observational Study At A Tertiary Care Hospital In South Asian Country, Abdul Baqi, Sheema Saadia

Section of Cardiology

Background: Saphenous vein graft (SVG) may occlude either early or several months to years after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Doing re-do CABG surgery is associated with higher complication and mortality rate as compared to percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in SVG. However, PCI of SVG is associated with more periprocedural and in-hospital complications as compared to PCI of native coronary arteries. Due to the scarcity of local data in this regard, this study was designed to estimate the periprocedural and in-hospital outcomes among PCI in SVG.
Objectives: We aim to study the periprocedural and in-hospital outcomes among patients who …

Implementation Of A Postdischarge Virtual Visit And Nurse Follow-Up Protocol To Decrease 30-Day Readmission Rates For Patients With Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, Kimberly Thompson

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing DNP Capstone Projects

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a rare, chronic disease with no cure. Patients with this disease have high mortality and morbidity, experience frequent hospitalizations, readmissions, and psychosocial burdens, and require a high degree of self-care management skills (Doyle-Cox et al., 2016; Lattimer et al., 2016; McDevitt & Walter, 2019). More than half of PAH patients are hospitalized within the first year following diagnosis, and about 20% are readmitted to the hospital within thirty days of discharge (Bhattacharya et al., 2019: Tonelli, 2020). These patients also have a high symptom burden, and these symptoms significantly affect their physical and mental quality …

Implementation Of Same Day Discharge Following Elective Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, Kaitlyn Miller Jeffcoat

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing DNP Capstone Projects

High rates of Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and ischemic heart disease (IHD) have led to ever-increasing numbers of percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) performed. The prevalence of IHD and subsequent PCI has been found to limit bed availability and access to cardiovascular care. Historically, the standard of care following elective PCI has included overnight observation (OO) though clinical advances to PCI procedures have made it possible for same day discharge (SDD) following elective PCI. There are many benefits of SDD following elective PCI that include increased access to cardiovascular care, hospital cost savings, and patient satisfaction without compromising patient safety. The DNP …

Vascular calcification predicts atherosclerotic plaque rupture and cardiovascular events. Retrospective studies of women taking bisphosphonates (BiPs), a proposed therapy for vascular calcification, showed that BiPs paradoxically increased morbidity in patients with prior acute cardiovascular events but decreased mortality in event-free patients. Calcifying extracellular vesicles (EVs), released by cells within atherosclerotic plaques, aggregate and nucleate calcification. We hypothesized that BiPs block EV aggregation and modify existing mineral growth, potentially altering microcalcification morphology and the risk of plaque rupture. Three-dimensional (3D) collagen hydrogels incubated with calcifying EVs were used to mimic fibrous cap calcification in vitro, while an ApoE−/− mouse was used …

Genetic Mechanisms Of Transcriptional Regulation In Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Xujie Zhao Apr 2021

Genetic Mechanisms Of Transcriptional Regulation In Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Xujie Zhao

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Introduction. Advances in genomic profiling and sequencing studies have identified germline and somatic variations that are associated with childhood ALL, improving our understanding of the genetic basis of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified germline genetic variations of ARID5B and, more recently, IGF2BP1 that are associated with susceptibility to ALL. Genome-wide sequencing studies also discovered a new ALL subtype characterized of ZNF384-mediated chromosomal translocations, providing new insights into genetic heterogeneity in childhood ALL. However, the underlying mechanism by which these genetic variants contribute to the transcriptional regulatory circuitries of ALL is still poorly understood. …

MEDI 9331 Scholarly Activities Clinical Years

There is a paucity of data regarding the clinical correlation of obesity and cirrhosis in a predominantly Hispanic population. Additionally, data is limited on the contribution of BMI to the incidence of liver cirrhosis in Hispanics in South Texas. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of liver cirrhosis and compare the prevalence between Hispanic and Non-Hispanics. In addition, these researchers seek to investigate the prevalence of liver cirrhosis stratified by body mass index. These researchers hypothesize that the prevalence of liver cirrhosis is higher amongst Hispanics than Non-Hispanics individuals, and that higher body mass index scores …

An Analysis Of The Interpretability Of Neural Networks Trained On Magnetic Resonance Imaging For Stroke Outcome Prediction, Esra Zihni, John D. Kelleher, Bryony Mcgarry

Conference papers

Applying deep learning models to MRI scans of acute stroke patients to extract features that are indicative of short-term outcome could assist a clinician’s treatment decisions. Deep learning models are usually accurate but are not easily interpretable. Here, we trained a convolutional neural network on ADC maps from hyperacute ischaemic stroke patients for prediction of short-term functional outcome and used an interpretability technique to highlight regions in the ADC maps that were most important in the prediction of a bad outcome. Although highly accurate, the model’s predictions were not based on aspects of the ADC maps related to stroke pathophysiology.
