Reliability Of Assessment Of Postural Control In The Sitting Position In The Hemiplegic Subjects By Use Of A Functional Reach Task, Karen Dreher Carter

Rehabilitation Sciences Theses & Dissertations

No single standardized and reliable method exists for measuring postural control in sitting in the stroke patient population. Postural control in sitting is often a portion of the total physical therapy assessment of the hemiplegic patient. The purpose of this research was to investigate the reliability of a functional reach test as a measure of postural control in sitting in the adult hemiplegic population. The measurement method was performed on 23 adult hemiplegic subjects, ages 62-88 years (mean= 73.6 + 7.9 years). Two physical therapists scored the subjects on the functional reach task. once the functional reach measure was obtained …

Fatigue is a major symptom of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), along with joint pain, stiffness and functional impairment. Balancing activity and rest in order to decrease fatigue is frequently mentioned by health professionals as an important strategy in the management of the disease. One hundred and three adult men and women with RA were surveyed via a written questionnaire about their experience of fatigue, four types of rest, employment status, duration of illness, age, sex, and advice about rest. Frequencies related to these variables are reported. Some rest variables were found to be significantly correlated with age and fatigue. No significant …

A Comparison Of Myofascial Release And Ultrasound In The Treatment Of Musculoskeletal Pain, Dianna Lynn Bishop

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of myofascial release (MFR) compared to ultrasound (US) in treating musculoskeletal pain. Data in the form of number of trigger points, active range-of-motion of the affected joint, pain scale measurement, and a Treatment Response Questionnaire score, were collected.

The Mann-Whitney U value supported that the MFR group outranked the US group 47 percent when ranking the percent change in trigger point number from pre to post treatment.

The Mann-Whitney U value supported that the MFR group outranked the US group in pain scale measurement. Kruskal-Wallis H value supported that MFR …

Cerebrovascular Lesions, Emotional Behavior And Changes In Reinforcement Density, George Kahle Henry

Masters Theses

Two adult stroke patients, one left hemisphere and one right hemisphere, reported weekly levels of depression, anxiety, and hostility following discharge to the home environment. Spouses reported weekly levels of perceived changes in emotional behavior. Data on changes in emotional behavior were recorded using the Multiple Affect Adjective Checklist. Weekly rates of positive reinforcement were recorded throughout the study for both patients. Following an eight week baseline period the rate of positive reinforcement was increased via manipulation of homework assignments to involve the patients in previously enjoyed activities. Results revealed a moderately high negative correlation between patient*s reported level of …

Compression Of The Duodenum By The Root Of The Mesentery, Peter A. Haas, Jawaid Akhtar, Lester Kobylak Jun 1982

Compression Of The Duodenum By The Root Of The Mesentery, Peter A. Haas, Jawaid Akhtar, Lester Kobylak

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Compression of the duodenum by the root of the mesentery is a rare pathological entity that has caused much controversy because it has been mistakenly identified as the "superior mesenteric artery syndrome" or the "vascular compression of the duodenum." We discuss the pathological anatomy and the diagnosis of the disease, and report an illustrative case. Some authors report many cases of the syndrome, while others doubt its existence. Before surgery is considered, the diagnosis should be established beyond doubt and a prolonged period of observation, medical treatment, and nutritional support should be provided. The barium contrast swallowing test combined with …

Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations

A two group time series design was used to determine if exposure of adolescent clients to dental plaque charts during oral health instruction sessions is effective in motivating them to improve oral health over a six month period. Fifty-six adolescents who previously had received treatment at Old Dominion University Dental Hygiene Clinic consented to participate and were randomly assigned to a control or experimental group. The Triumph Of Chiropractic - And Then What?, Walter I. Wardwell May 1980

The Triumph Of Chiropractic - And Then What?, Walter I. Wardwell

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The evolution of chiropractic from a marginal health profession to the strongest and most popular alternative to orthodox medicine in the United States is examined and compared with osteopathy and naturopathy. Evidence is offered that 1974 was the landmark year for recognition of chiropractors (e.g., accreditation of colleges, reimbursement for services under Medicare) and relaxation of the American Medical Association's policy of active and overt opposition (e.g., elimination from its code of ethics of the tabu on professional association. The public policy question of the future status of chiropractors is raised and alternatives considered. It is concluded that the most …

Effect Of The Rubber-Cup Prophylaxis And The Self-Administered Prophylaxis On The Oral Hygiene Performance Of The Pedodontic Patient, Kay Diane Edwards Oct 1979

Effect Of The Rubber-Cup Prophylaxis And The Self-Administered Prophylaxis On The Oral Hygiene Performance Of The Pedodontic Patient, Kay Diane Edwards

Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations

The effects of two oral prophylaxis methods on the oral hygiene performance of children (N=l00) between the ages of 8 and 13 years were studied over a three month period. Subjects were randomly selected from a dental hygiene clinic patient population and assigned to one of two prophylaxis groups. Each child's oral hygiene was evaluated using the Patient Hygiene Performance Index prior to and at one month intervals following treatment. Multifactor analysis of variance revealed no significant difference between children's age and the type of prophylaxis received. A significant difference was observed between children ages 8 to 10.5 and 10.6 …
