An Educational Tool For Spinal Manual Therapy, Jennifer Brandt

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Spinal manual therapy is a broad term used in physical therapy. Its applications include evaluation, pain relief, relaxation, and restoration of normal joint motion. Unfortunately, there is a lack of scientific research supporting the therapeutic effects of spinal manual therapy. Despite its questionable effectiveness, spinal manual therapy has become a widely used and integral practice for physical therapists. To a physical therapist, spinal manual therapy can include a vast array of procedures including: soft tissue mobilization, passive muscle stretching, muscle energy techniques, and joint manipulation. The purpose of this project is to provide the student with a brief summary on …

This video will demonstrate mechanical lumbar traction in the supine and prone positions as well as cervical traction in the seated and supine positions. The use of video in education enhances the transfer of information from instructor to student by providing consistent information, repetition, easy use, and realism. Included with the video is a study guide that contains detailed listings of traction information that …

A Literature Review Of The Fundamentals Of Hippotherapy, Laura Weisberg

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

For centuries, horses have been used to help rehabilitate people with neuromuscular disorders. However, not until recently has it been recognized as a treatment modality utilized in the practice of physical therapy. Hippotherapy is implemented by a licensed therapist who uses the multifaceted movement of the horse as a treatment modality to address a broad range of special needs in individuals with disabilities. Unfortunately, there is limited information provided on this subject.

In a review of the literature, I will discuss the history, the different theories, the treatment techniques, and the research that has been done on hippotherapy. The purpose …

Group I comprised of 139 (65%) knees with pure meniscus lesions without any ligament laxity, the remaining 49 (35%) knees in group II had anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) deficiency in addition to meniscus lesions. In group I, 93% had excellent to good and 7% had fair results by criteria of Tapper and Hoover. In group II, 75% had excellent to good and 25% had fair results. Arthroscopic knee surgery was a good method of identifying patients in group II who required anterior cruciate reconstruction. …

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

A randomized controlled single-blind trial was performed to compare lumbo-sacral selective posterior rhizotomy (SPR) followed by intensive physiotherapy, with intensive physiotherapy alone in improving motor function in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy. Fifteen patients were randomly assigned to each treatment modality. Patients in the SPR group had rhizotomy within 1 month, followed by intensive outpatient physiotherapy for 9 months. Patients assigned to physiotherapy alone had identical intensive physiotherapy. There was a statistically significant and clinically important difference in improvement in motor function in favor of the SPR group, with a mean increase in total Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM) …

Headache Intervention: A Nonpharmacologic Approach To The Treatment Of Tension-Type Headaches, Marty D. Mohr

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Headaches have long been a problem for many people with hundreds of thousands seeking medical attention for their head pain each year. Migraine and tension-type are by far the most common forms of headaches, but from a physical therapy standpoint, the literature indicates that tension-type headaches respond better from the services provided by a therapist. The objective of this literature review will be to examine the different nonpharmacologic physical therapy approaches to the treatment of tension-type headaches. The techniques to be examined will include spinal manipulation, traditional physical therapy, electro acupuncture, and biofeedback and relaxation training. Examination of the literature …

A Literature Review Of Alcohol Abuse And Dependence, Julie R. Vaughan Jan 1997

A Literature Review Of Alcohol Abuse And Dependence, Julie R. Vaughan

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Alcohol abuse and/or dependence poses significant risks to a person's health. The negative effects and consequences of alcohol abuse and/or dependence has been well documented in the literature. Many people who are either alcohol abusers or alcohol dependent are admitted to hospitals with neurological deficits, medical complications and traumatic injuries. Often times an etiology related to alcohol abuse is ignored.

This population may be referred to physical therapy for rehabilitation. Functional outcomes and compliance are often unsatisfactory with this population. A better understanding of alcohol abuse and/or dependence could help identify persons at risk and improve functional outcomes.

The purpose …

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a nurse home visiting programme on the rehabilitation of children following their discharge from a dedicated child psychiatry hospital. The research was based on the premise that a nurse home visiting programme may have a positive influence on the outcomes of the rehabilitation of children following their discharge from hospital, if it reduced the need of outpatient appointments with the psychiatrist and the need for children to be re-admitted to hospital.
