Hippotherapy As A Modality In Rehabilitation, H. Rebecca Adams Jan 2000

Hippotherapy As A Modality In Rehabilitation, H. Rebecca Adams

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Hippotherapy is fast becoming a treatment option for today's therapists. Recent efforts in rehabilitation have focused on emphasizing the "multidisciplinary team" approach, involving occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech and language pathologists as well as including members of the family in the clinic's treatment process. Hippotherapy is the way in which these disciplines can easily be combined, as well as including the family in an educational as well as exciting treatment program for clients. This study will review a wide source of literature addressing the definition and process of hippotherapy and the physiological components of the program. Indications, contraindications and precautions …

The Lymphatic System, Lymphedema, And A Discussion Of Methods For Treatment: A Review Of The Literature, Lisa Schneider Jan 2000

The Lymphatic System, Lymphedema, And A Discussion Of Methods For Treatment: A Review Of The Literature, Lisa Schneider

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

The condition of lymphedema has a significant impact of the quality of life of the person affected. Few patients are educated about the possibility of developing lymphedema and methods for prevention of lymphedema following surgical removal of lymph nodes or radiation therapy. Also, most physical therapists have received minimal or inadequate training in the area of lymphedema treatment. Hence, physical therapists may actually damage a patient's lymphatic system by using inadequate techniques.

The purpose of this literature review is to examine the lymphatic system, discuss the condition of lymphedema, and review various methods for prevention and treatment of lymphedema in …

A Comparison Between Edema And Lymphedema, Janelle Sunnarborg Jan 2000

A Comparison Between Edema And Lymphedema, Janelle Sunnarborg

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

The terms edema and lymphedema are often used interchangeably but treatment approaches for these forms of swelling differ. The purpose of this paper is to compare the treatments for edema and lymphedema, provide a background in the anatomy of the circulatory system and discuss signs, symptoms, and causes of swelling. Management of edema is directed toward its cause but physical therapy treatment may also be appropriate. Lymphedema remains a risk for years following initial injury, therefore, preventative measures are especially important to address, to decrease the occurrence of cellulitis.

Physical therapy treatment for edema and lymphedema include elevation, compression, exercise, …

Examination Of Biomechanical Correction Technique™ As A Diagnostic And Treatment Classification System For Chronic Low Back Pain, Benjamin L. Asper Jan 2000

Examination Of Biomechanical Correction Technique™ As A Diagnostic And Treatment Classification System For Chronic Low Back Pain, Benjamin L. Asper

Masters Theses

Evidence supporting the use of one optimal treatment approach for low back pain is lacking in the research. Two models exist to aid in the formation of a diagnosis, the pathology-based model and the classification system. The pathology-based models use perceived pathology to arrive at a diagnosis, whereas, a classification system uses categories, criteria, and objective findings in order to place patients into a select group. The purpose of this research was to define a new examination and treatment approach called Biomechanical Correction Technique™ (BCT™) and report the treatment outcomes for a sample of low back pain patients with a …

Outcomes Of Pregnancy In Women With Cystic Fibrosis, Bethany Jean Geldmaker Jan 2000

Outcomes Of Pregnancy In Women With Cystic Fibrosis, Bethany Jean Geldmaker

Theses and Dissertations

Medical advances in disease management has improved quality of life for women with cystic fibrosis (CF) and now enables them to consider pregnancy. The purpose of the study was to examine women's perceptions of how the demands of having CF influenced their ability to care for their children and continue to meet their own health needs. The study design was grounded theory methodology with a complementarity research technique to incorporate qualitative and quantitative data collection. Participants were 12 women recruited over the Internet and through an adult CF newsletter who completed questionnaires for demands of illness (DOlI) and self care …

Effects Of Electrical Stimulation On Wound Closure In Mice With Experimental Diabetes Mellitus, Habiba A. Thawer, Pamela E. Houghton, Luther Kloth, Anna Butryn Jan 2000

Effects Of Electrical Stimulation On Wound Closure In Mice With Experimental Diabetes Mellitus, Habiba A. Thawer, Pamela E. Houghton, Luther Kloth, Anna Butryn

Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of electrical stimulation (ES) on the closure of full-thickness excisional wounds in mice with type-1 experimental diabetes mellitus (DM). Alloxon monohydrate (100mg/kg) was used to induce experimental DM in mole CD-1 mice (n = 88). Full-thickness skin excisions (1cm2) in diabetic (urine glucose > 0) and non-diabetic (urine glucose = 0) mice were administered 1, 3, or 5 treatments of ES (200μs, 200 Hz) for 15 minutes, at 0 (sham), 5, 10, or 12.5 volts. Alloxon injection resulted in a positive urine glucose test in 48 mice yielding …

Nonambulatory Tetraparesis Secondary To Cervical Vertebral Canal Stenosis In A Great Dane, Ömer Beşalti, Sai̇t Tong, Ahmet Özak, Faruk Akin Jan 2000

Nonambulatory Tetraparesis Secondary To Cervical Vertebral Canal Stenosis In A Great Dane, Ömer Beşalti, Sai̇t Tong, Ahmet Özak, Faruk Akin

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A five-year-old male Great Dane was presented with nonambulatory tetraparesis and during the drip follow-up period its neurologic status became worse, despite conservative management for 10 days. Ligamentum flavum disease, dorsal bony compression and malformation of the articular process were diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A dorsal laminectomy was performed. Physiotherapy, including massage, flexion and extension of the limbs, was done twice a day. Voluntary standing and walking were observed during the fourth week after the operation. From a telephone conversation with the owner it was determined that there was no problem in standing up and trotting in the …

Influence Of Public Image Of Nurses On Nursing Practice, Miyuki Takase Jan 2000

Influence Of Public Image Of Nurses On Nursing Practice, Miyuki Takase

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Many researchers believe that nurses live in a dual structure, encompassing both the social and nursing worlds. They contend that these two worlds have contrasting views toward nurses. This is, while nurses are guided to establish professional status, society still expects them to remain in a dependent role. This conflict is assumed to have a negative impact on nurses’ psychological and functional states (Kalisch & Kalisch, 1983 & 1987). However, this assumption has not yet been explored sufficiently. The aim of this descriptive correlational study was therefore to investigate the relationships among the public image of nurses, nurses’ self concept, …
