Serum Procalcitonin Levels In Children With Clinical Syndromes For Targeting Antibiotic Use At An Emergency Department Of A Kenyan Hospital, Samuel Akech, Doris Kinuthia, William Macharia

Serum procalcitonin (PCT) was measured in 228 children aged 1 month to 15 years at an emergency department of a hospital located in an area without local malaria transmission in children with suspected infections; 21% (49) children had a clinical syndrome for suspected bacterial infections (Syndrome+ve). In children with Syndrome+ve criteria, 27/49 (55.1%) had PCT ≥0.5 µg/l but only 59/179 (32.9%) of those Syndrome-ve had abnormal PCT, χ2 = 8.0, p = 0.005; positive likelihood ratio = 2.0 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.2-3.3]; negative likelihood ratio = 0.8 (95% CI 0.7-1.0). Introduction: Children admitted to hospitals in resource-poor settings remain at risk of both inpatient and post-discharge mortality. While known risk factors such as young age and nutritional status can identify children at risk, they do not provide clear mechanistic targets for intervention. The Childhood Acute Illness and Nutrition (CHAIN) cohort study aims to characterise the biomedical and social risk factors for mortality in acutely ill children in hospitals and after discharge to identify targeted interventions to reduce mortality.

In this study, elementary-age students were asked to respond to a newly developed School Boredom Proneness Scale (SBPS) including questions relating to a five-factor model of boredom. Students were also asked to rate how often they become bored at school and how bored they seem compared to classmates. This study describes the influence of a palliative care team on location of death and location of death discussions with patients/caregivers, and determines whether location of death discussions influence location of death.

With palliative care or a location of death discussion, patients were less likely to die in the PICU and more likely to die at home. Location of death discussions were more likely to occur if a palliative care team was involved.

Inadequately treated surgical pain in children leads to risky complications, such as longer recovery times, infection, prolonged hospitalizations, readmissions, altered pain sensitivity, neurophysiological changes, and cognitive-behavioral abnormalities (Campbell, 2013; Ibrahim, Jones, Lai, & Tan, 2016). Review of the literature indicated intravenous dexmedetomidine, as an adjunct, may lead to improved outcomes and a reduction in postoperative pain in children undergoing surgical intervention. An evidenced-based educational presentation introduced intravenous dexmedetomidine in children to anesthesia professionals, pharmacy staff, and the pediatric care team at a tertiary care center. The aim of this study is to determine if children with hyperkinetic biliary dyskinesia have resolution of symptoms after laparoscopic cholecystectomy at our institution.

Conclusion: Cholecystectomy for hyperkinetic biliary dyskinesia may or may not improve symptoms. Further research should focus on pathophysiology of the disease in order to create an evidence-based definition of biliary dyskinesia in children to determine who will benefit from cholecystectomy.

This article reviews the rate of body dissatisfaction and weight bias among young children. It was initially hypothesized that body-image begins much earlier than adolescence, where most interventions take place. Out of fifty articles read on the subject, forty-five peer reviewed articles were included in this review. The findings of these articles were synthesized for a comprehensive review on the topic. Results suggested that weight bias begins around three years of age, while body dissatisfaction begins around age five for girls, and seven for boys. Rates of body dissatisfaction among children were similar to the rate among adolescents, averaging out …

A survey method was implemented where elementary school educators were asked to report on their special education students use of their device during their school day. Purpose: This pilot study investigated the prevalence of Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) in third-grade school children in Milwaukee Wisconsin, USA.

Methods: A convenience sample of third-grade school children in the Milwaukee Public School System (MPS) participated in the study. Calibrated examiners trained on the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (EAPD) MIH recommendations examined the children between December 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015. Children were examined at their schools using a flashlight and mirror after receiving consent from parents/caregivers and assent from each child. The objective of this research was to develop awareness of the impact on children being cared for by caregivers with mental health issues by examining the experiences of individuals who had a caregiver with severe and persistent mental health issues during childhood. Objectives: To present the 6-month prevalence and sociodemographic correlates of mental disorders and mental health–related service contacts in a sample of children (4 to 11 years) and youth (12 to 17 years) in Ontario. Methods: The 2014 Ontario Child Health Study is a provincially representative survey of 6537 families with children aged 4 to 17 years in Ontario. The Rapid Assessment of Problem Solving (RAPS) is a clinical assessment of verbal problem solving skills created by Dr. Robert Marshall and colleagues (Marshall, 2003). The assessment, originally developed for adults, is based on the well-known twenty questions game. The clinician administering the assessment chooses a target picture and the participant asks yes or no questions to eliminate incorrect answers and, eventually, identify the target picture. Polyvictimization is the simultaneous, accumulative exposure to multiple forms of victimization. Finkelhor’s pathways to polyvictimization model consisted of four hypothesized pathways to becoming polyvictimized.
