Omicron variant strains encode large numbers of changes in the spike protein compared to historical SARS-CoV-2 isolates. Although in vitro studies have suggested that several monoclonal antibody therapies lose neutralizing activity against Omicron variants, the effects in vivo remain largely unknown. Here, we report on the protective efficacy against three SARS-CoV-2 Omicron lineage strains (BA.1, BA.1.1, and BA.2) of two monoclonal antibody therapeutics (S309 [Vir Biotechnology] monotherapy and AZD7442 [AstraZeneca] combination), which correspond to ones used to treat or prevent SARS-CoV-2 infections in humans. Despite losses in neutralization potency in cell culture, S309 or AZD7442 treatments reduced BA.1, BA.1.1, and …

Medicinal Plants And Herbs For Cancer Prevention, Madeline Mctigue, Julianna Goelzer, William Ranahan
Research Symposium
Modern medicine has yet to produce selective treatments for the vast majority of cancer types. Most chemotherapies, though complex, remain non-specific, and thus destroy healthy cells. Over 25% of cancer patients die from the effects of chemotherapy before the actual tumor would have progressed to the point of organismal death (Megget 2008). Early detection remains the most accurate indicator of successful treatment outcome. But why wait until the disease presents to deal with it? Here the authors argue that a well supported immune system coupled with a dietary regimen of key food-based medicines is a far superior strategy. Given that …

Diabetic Ketoacidosis in Pediatric Patients
Abstract
Diabetic ketoacidosis is a life-threatening complication in children with type 1 diabetes. Children with type 1 diabetes cannot produce endogenous insulin and must receive exogenous insulin to allow glucose influx into cells throughout the body for energy consumption. Without insulin, the child will progress to diabetic ketoacidosis. The covid-19 pandemic introduced new obstacles for patients with a predisposition for type 1 diabetes, presenting with a more profound acidosis, greater need for …

Comprehensive Pain Assessment For Veterans In Long-Term Care., Christopher Jenkins
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background Literature supports the need for comprehensive pain assessment (CPA) in long-term care facilities. CPAs provide valuable information for facility providers and health care staff to intervene appropriately regardless of cognitive ability. Without the use of such tools, pain can go undertreated or ignored for this underserved population causing undue suffering and poor quality of life. Chronic pain perpetuates an endless cycle of immobility, falls, injury, functional decline, and eventual death for this population.
Purpose: A CPA was implemented, evaluated, and integrated into the care processes in a long-term care facility for veterans
Method: The IHI improvement model with a …

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
In the surgical setting, caring for a patient in the operative and postoperative phases require perioperative care providers to be attentive to risk factors that can lead to potential harm. Of all the possible complications of surgical cases, acute kidney injury is more common than others. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is kidney function that abruptly declines over a few hours or days, increases serum creatinine, causes a period of oliguria, and has three levels of severity (Zarbock et al., 2018, p.1236-1237). Risk factors predispose patients to AKI, including age, diabetes, cardiac failure, previous history of AKI, sepsis, and many more. …

Anti-intellectualism is often offered as an explanation for irrational actions, especially in the grips of uncertainty. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have uncovered the consequences of anti-intellectualism within the healthcare system. Nurses, the most identifiability trusted healthcare professionals, have been used to illustrate a healthcare paradox regarding COVID-19. The healthcare paradox presents nurses as highly trained healthcare professionals who do not believe in their own science and reject scientific expertise. Furthermore, nursing anti-intellectualism has been used to spread misinformation during a major health crisis. Yet, we do not know the depth in which anti-intellectualism exists within the nursing profession. …
