Numerous neurochemical changes occur with aging and stroke mainly affects the elderly. Our previous study has found interferon regulatory factor 5 (IRF5) and 4 (IRF4) regulate neuroinflammation in young stroke mice. However, whether the IRF5-IRF4 regulatory axis has the same effect in aged brains is not known. In this study, aged (18-20-month-old), microglial IRF5 or IRF4 conditional knockout (CKO) mice were subjected to a 60-min middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Stroke outcomes were quantified at 3d after MCAO. Flow cytometry and ELISA were performed to evaluate microglial activation and immune responses. We found aged microglia express higher levels of IRF5 …

The Sumatran orang-utan (Pongo abelii) reference genome was first published in 2011, in conjunction with ten re-sequenced genomes from unrelated wild-caught individuals. Together, these published data have been utilized in almost all great ape genomic studies, plus in much broader comparative genomic research. Here, we report that the original sequencing Consortium inadvertently switched nine of the ten samples and/or resulting re-sequenced genomes, erroneously attributing eight of these to the wrong source individuals. Among them is a genome from the recently identified Tapanuli (P. tapanuliensis) species: thus, this genome was sequenced and published a full six years prior to the species' …

Introduction: Significant racial disparities persist in maternal morbidity rates, disproportionately affecting Black women. Experiencing high levels of stress during pregnancy is associated with increased risk for preterm birth, infant mortality, and preeclampsia. This study investigates the impact of psychosocial life stressors on maternal morbidity and racial disparities utilizing the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) dataset.
Methods: Participants (N=24,209) included were from Phase 8 (2016-2018) of the PRAMS survey across five states. Stressors were grouped into traumatic, partner-related, financial, or emotional. Maternal outcomes included gestational diabetes, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, prenatal depression, and postpartum depression. The association between life stressors …

Introduction: Racial and ethnic disparities in perinatal health outcomes are among the greatest threats to population health in the United States. Black birthing communities are most impacted by these inequities due to structural racism throughout society and within health care settings. Although multiple studies have shown that structural racism and the disrespect associated with this system of inequity are the root causes of observed perinatal inequities, little scholarship has centered the needs of Black birthing communities to create alternative care models. Leaning on reproductive justice and critical race theoretical frameworks, this study explores good birth experiences as described by Black …

Using data from the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-to-Be (nuMoM2b), several relationships were explored between nutrition and diet, likely attributed to education, culture, training, and habits around food. While these factors remain relevant and worth pursuing, data analysis implied that the most significant issue remaining is access to healthcare. Across race, age, and nutrition consumption, if pregnant people make higher incomes—inferring better access to healthcare and higher-quality nutrients, then their risk of preeclampsia is reduced. Accordingly, this paper performs an extensive literature review of the intersection of extreme maternal age and nutrient intake as a significant factor for preeclampsia. …

This article describes how a multi-sector coalition focusing on carrying out recommendations of the Philadelphia Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC) engages community participation through the development of equitable strategies that culminate in the implementation of actionable methods to improve perinatal outcomes.
The U.S. maternal mortality crisis continues to impact countless families and communities. Despite having some of the finest academic medical centers in the nation and a functioning county-level maternal mortality review committee, the maternal mortality rate in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is far above the national average. Vital statistics show that Philadelphia’s rate of pregnancy-related deaths from 2012 to 2018 was …

Birth equity can be defined as “The assurance of the conditions of optimal births for all people with a willingness to address racial and social inequities in a sustained effort.” (Birth Equity |California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative, n.d.). Complex explanations exist for adverse maternal outcomes, but unequal health care, socioeconomic and racial inequalities pose risks to women and their babies (“Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care,” 2003). The data is clear: Maternal death rates have increased and are 3 to 4 times higher for black women than white women (Zaharatos et al., 2018). These …

The Role Of Occupational Therapy In Unplanned Motherhood, Cierra Stewart, Karen Park
Summer 2022 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
For women experiencing unplanned pregnancy, the thought of becoming a mother can increase stress and affect the mother’s mental health. Maternal adjustment can include depression, anxiety, worry, stress, and happiness (Mihelic et al., 2016). The impact that this new role has effects daily demands, leading to a disruption in occupational engagement, environmental changes, and overall less time for the mother (Horne et al., 2005). There is currently not a well-defined role for occupational therapy within pregnancy medical clinics to support women experiencing unplanned pregnancy and their transition to motherhood. The purpose of this project is to provide care to new …

Occupational Therapy's Role In Athletic Retirement, Diana Mellin, Karen Park, Madison Harris
Summer 2022 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Athletic retirement is described as a life transition involving withdrawal from the athletic role. Throughout the process of athletic retirement, individuals experience a loss of identity, roles, routines, and social support which has shown to negatively impact their overall mental health and well-being (Marterella & Smoot, 2017). This study investigated elite athletes’ experiences throughout their transition to athletic retirement, a ten-question online survey and semi-structured interviews were administered. Themes that emerged from the data are occupational adjustment and relearning roles, experiencing a crossroads of identity, external expectations, and pressures. Participants shared experiencing a period of burnout and detachment right after …

Extraction of coal through mountaintop removal mining (MTR) alters many dimensions of the landscape. Explosive blasts, exposed rock, and coal washing have the potential to pollute air and water. Previous research suggests that infants born to mothers living in areas with MTR have a higher prevalence of birth defects. In this cross-sectional study, we further examine the relationship between MTR activity and several types of birth defects. Maternal exposure to MTR was assessed using remote sensing data from Skytruth, which captures MTR activity in the Central Appalachian region of the United States. Active MTR area was quantified within a five-kilometer …
