Role Of Hypertension In Low-Birth-Weight Racial Disparities Among Virginian Women, Ashli Owen Jan 2022

Role Of Hypertension In Low-Birth-Weight Racial Disparities Among Virginian Women, Ashli Owen

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Low birth weight (LBW) is a leading cause of infant mortality globally, but it disproportionately burdens the Black community in the United States, with a rate twice that of White women. Further, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDsP) increase LBW incidence. The purpose of the study was to assess the association between HDsP and LBW, maternal race and LBW, and the moderation effect of HDsP on race and LBW on Black and White women in Virginia. The theoretical framework for this study was based on the lifecourse health development model, which states that health should be viewed as an outcome of …

Development Of An Insomnia Assessment Guideline For Bipolar Disorder, Daniel Oyewusi Oyewole

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractBipolar disorder (BD) affects more than 1% of the world’s population regardless of race, sex, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. BD is a severe and chronic mental illness characterized by insomnia, depressed and elevated mood, racing thoughts, mood swings, anxiety and depression, and suicide. Insomnia is prevalent in BD and occurs across all stages of BD, yet no guidelines exist. The clinical practice guideline entitled the Insomnia Assessment Guideline for Bipolar Disorder (IAGBD) was developed using best-practice evidence from the published literature. The IAGBD is a step-by-step process for assessing insomnia in bipolar patients. Clinicians follow a series of questions in …

Newly Graduated Baccalaureate Nurses Critical-Thinking Development, Norberto Rosado Jan 2022

Newly Graduated Baccalaureate Nurses Critical-Thinking Development, Norberto Rosado

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

For the nursing profession, critical thinking is essential to provide safe and effectivepatient care. While the development of critical thinking skills is a desired outcome for newly graduated baccalaureate nurses, many lack the ability to make critical decisions. The absence of critical thinking among newly graduated nurses may be related to a lack of exposure to the clinical environment during their academic experience. This study explored how critical thinking processes can be affected by different approaches to baccalaureate clinical nursing education in Puerto Rico. A descriptive qualitative approach was used to understand the perceptions of newly graduated baccalaureate nurses regarding …

The Experiences Of Female Survivors Of Sexual Assault When They Make A Police Report, Tracy L. Rainey Jan 2022

The Experiences Of Female Survivors Of Sexual Assault When They Make A Police Report, Tracy L. Rainey

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Nearly 20% of all women will be the victim of an attempted or completed sexual assault within the United States, yet less than one quarter of victims will report their experienced crime to law enforcement (LE). Many survivors of sexual violence experience apprehension about reporting sexual assault, due to fear of social consequences, relational consequences, and fear of the reprisal from LE officers. The purpose of this interpretive descriptive qualitative study was to describe and interpret the experiences of adult, female sexual assault survivors when they make a LE report about their victimization. Resilience theory, which is the study of …

Self-Management Support Program For Dialysis Patients, Elmer Sadiang-Abay Jan 2022

Self-Management Support Program For Dialysis Patients, Elmer Sadiang-Abay

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractChronic kidney disease (CKD) prevalence rates have been on the rise in recent years, and currently, about 37 million Americans are living with the disease. Most patients with CKD progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD), resulting in additional treatments, including kidney transplants and hemodialysis (HD). HD treatments depend on patients’ adherence to self-management practices. The practice gap was the lack of guidelines for staff to use with ESRD patients to teach self-management strategies. This project aimed to develop an evidence-based clinical practice guideline (CPG) on a self-management support program for dialysis patients for use by health care providers at the …

Childhood Anxiety And Roles Of Parents, Educators, And Pediatric Healthcare Providers In Addressing Protective Factors, Gabriela Zamora-Ahlstrom

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractChildhood anxiety affects over 32% of youth in the United States, and when left untreated, contributes to poor school performance, social difficulties, truancy, school dropout rates, juvenile delinquency, substance abuse, and family and community difficulties. Preventing childhood anxiety by implementing effective protective factors for children can eliminate many of these outcomes. Using the biopsychosocial theory and social work systems theories, this study involved exploring the beliefs and attitudes of parents, educators, and pediatric healthcare providers in an affluent suburban community of Detroit (Rochester/Rochester Hills, MI), regarding their roles in providing protective factors against childhood anxiety. A generic qualitative research design …

If left unattended, burnout syndrome can lead to new or worsening health outcomes. The purpose of this nonexperimental quantitative study was to examine the relationship between stress self-management, perceived social support, health status, and burden among Puerto Rican informal caregivers. The theoretical foundations for this research were the informal caregiving integrative model and the individual and family self-management theory. Survey data were collected from 415 participants. Multiple regression analyses were performed to determine the relationship …

Type Of Union And Reproductive Health Influence On Domestic Violence In Sierra Leone, Yvonne Rowe Jan 2022

Type Of Union And Reproductive Health Influence On Domestic Violence In Sierra Leone, Yvonne Rowe

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Domestic violence (DV) is one of the most hidden but prevalent public health concerns affecting women of childbearing age in Africa, despite ongoing prevention initiatives. Lack of power and control in the household is a significant precursor of DV in women, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. While poverty, gender inequality, and societal norms have been identified as directly related to DV, the factors of type of union and reproductive health choice remain unexplored. This quantitative study with a cross-sectional design assessed the relationship between the type of union, female contraceptive use, and type of DV amongst women in Sierra Leone. Anchored …

Deadly Combinations: Factors That Are Associated With Simultaneous And Concurrent Polysubstance Use, Laura Lightfoot Jan 2022

Deadly Combinations: Factors That Are Associated With Simultaneous And Concurrent Polysubstance Use, Laura Lightfoot

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Mortality reports show that most overdose deaths include more than one substance. In addition, there is a gap in the literature that discusses risk factors for polysubstance use. The objective of this study was to explore what factors relate to the likelihood of engaging in polysubstance use, defined as using more than one substance. Specifically, the goal was to evaluate predictors of simultaneous (i.e., the use of alcohol and another substance at the same time in the past six months) polysubstance use and concurrent (i.e., the use of any two substances in the past six months) polysubstance use, vs. no …

Reexamining Cytolethal Distending Toxin's Host Cell Entry And Trafficking: The First Steps Down A Long Road, George Huhn Jan 2022

Reexamining Cytolethal Distending Toxin's Host Cell Entry And Trafficking: The First Steps Down A Long Road, George Huhn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Cytolethal distending toxin (CDT) is a virulence factor produced by many Gram-negative bacteria, including Haemophilus ducreyi, the causative agent of genital chancroid. CDT is a heterotrimeric toxin consisting of a cell-binding domain (CdtA + CdtC) and a catalytic domain (CdtB) that has DNase activity. After binding to the host plasma membrane, CDT undergoes endocytosis and travels through the endosomes en route to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Only CdtB and CdtC arrive in the Golgi before moving to the ER. Only then does CdtB move into the nucleus, causing DNA damage that induces cell-cycle arrest and apoptosis. The previous CDT trafficking …

Newcorn, Christine Ginalis, Catherine Heitz, Jeenia Zaki, Farzana Khan, Mardia Nasrin, Kathryn Sie, Donato Deingeniis, Yasmin L. Hurd

Publications and Research

Background: Growing evidence shows an association between in utero exposure to natural disasters and child behavioral problems, but we still know little about the development of specific psychopathology in preschool-aged children. Methods: Preschool children (n = 163, mean age = 3.19, 85.5% racial and ethnic minorities) and their parents (n = 151) were evaluated annually at ages 2–5 to assess the emergence of psychopathology using the Preschool Age Psychopathological Assessment (PAPA), a parent-report structured diagnostic interview developed for preschool-age children. Sixty-six (40.5%) children were exposed to Sandy Storm (SS) in utero and 97 (59.5%) were not. Survival analysis evaluated patterns …

The Interaction Of Children Living In Single-Parent Households With Healthcare In Tennessee, Molly Balcer Jan 2022

The Interaction Of Children Living In Single-Parent Households With Healthcare In Tennessee, Molly Balcer

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

The objective of this paper is to examine how a child living in a single-parent home is able to interact with healthcare in the state of Tennessee in 2020. Family structure in the United States trends away from the nuclear family, with 32% of households containing children headed by single-parents in 2018 as recorded by the United States Census Bureau. Given the knowledge that children in single-parent families are at higher risk for unmet healthcare needs, it is prudent to determine whether these trends are mirrored in Tennessee. Tests of statistical analysis were conducted on publicly available data collected from …

Relationship Between Poverty And Ed Visit Rate (Per 10,000) With Primary Diagnosis Of Asthma Amongst Ohio Counties, Emily Schneider

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

Objective: Previous literature have found mixed results regarding poverty as a risk factor for asthma prevalence. More recently, national data obtained from Medicaid has shown that there is no association between poverty and asthma prevalence but has shown an association with asthma-related Emergency Department (ED) visits and hospitalizations. The objective of this study is to determine if this relationship is evident amongst the 88 counties in Ohio. Methods: Pearson correlations were conducted with the following variables: percent in poverty under age 18 and the ED visit rate with a primary diagnosis of asthma amongst children in each Ohio county. This …
