Clinical Effectiveness Of High Definition Fluorescence Camera In Detection Of Initial Occlusal Caries, Mohamed Salama, Olfat Hassanein, Omar Shaalan, Asmaa Yassen
Dentistry
Background: Although visual inspection is the preferred route in everyday clinical practise for detecting early caries lesions, novel technologies like light fluorescence-based devices (Vista Proof iX HD smart) have been developed to enhance early caries detection. Material and Methods: Occlusal surface of 45 molar and 49 premolar teeth from 34 adult participants who fulfilled the eligibility criteria were examined by two observers using three diagnostic methods. Examination was performed visually using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS-II) followed by Vista Proof. Fissurotomy was applied for histological validation. Intra- and inter-observer agreement were measured for ICDAS-II and light-induced fluorescence …

Electroporation And Cell Killing By Milli- To Nanosecond Pulses And Avoiding Neuromuscular Stimulation In Cancer Ablation, Emily Gudvangen, Vitalii Kim, Vitalij Novickij, Federico Battista, Andrei G. Pakhomov
Bioelectrics Publications
Ablation therapies aim at eradication of tumors with minimal impact on surrounding healthy tissues. Conventional pulsed electric field (PEF) treatments cause pain and muscle contractions far beyond the ablation area. The ongoing quest is to identify PEF parameters efficient at ablation but not at stimulation. We measured electroporation and cell killing thresholds for 150 ns–1 ms PEF, uni- and bipolar, delivered in 10- to 300-pulse trains at up to 1 MHz rates. Monolayers of murine colon carcinoma cells exposed to PEF were stained with YO-PRO-1 dye to detect electroporation. In 2–4 h, dead cells were labeled with propidium. Electroporation and …
Catheter-Directed Embolectomy For Massive Pulmonary Embolism In A Pediatric Patient, Shin Mei Chan, Fabian M Laage Gaupp, Jessica M Lee, Jeffrey S Pollak, Akhil Khosla
Catheter-Directed Embolectomy For Massive Pulmonary Embolism In A Pediatric Patient, Shin Mei Chan, Fabian M Laage Gaupp, Jessica M Lee, Jeffrey S Pollak, Akhil Khosla
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Pulmonary embolisms can affect 0.9 in 100,000 children and carry high risk for mortality. However, management of pediatric pulmonary embolism is largely derived from adult studies and treatment often includes local or systemic thrombolytics or anticoagulation, which may pose unique bleeding risks in children and adolescents compared with adults. This report describes a case in which catheter-directed embolectomy was used to successfully manage a pediatric patient with high-risk/massive pulmonary embolism. This case suggests that catheter-directed embolectomy is an effective therapy in patients outside the adult population and more research is required to expand inclusion criteria for current catheter-directed embolectomy treatment …
Healing Through Mother Earth, Taylor A. Russell
Healing Through Mother Earth, Taylor A. Russell
Dance (MFA) Theses
This thesis deals with mental health, with a focus on Black women. Historically, Black women are often so compromised, being constant caregivers and helping everyone else, that they forget to help themselves, not having the time and financial means to do so. If we go back in the time of slavery, many Black women were taking care of slave owners' children and suckling the white women’s babies instead of their own. By the time they got home and after diligently caring for other people’s children they were focused on their own children, who they had been away from for hours …

Background: As rates of obesity and diabetes have increased dramatically over the past few decades, the use of anti-obesity drugs has now become a routine therapeutic measure. However, the pharmacological effects of chronic use of these drugs in humans frequently lead to reduced efficacy in reducing appetite and body weight through as-yet-unidentified mechanisms. An example of this can be found in animal studies where the appetite suppressant DL-fenfluramine (FEN) is chronically administered and its tolerance develops in animals and humans. The appetite effects of FEN are typically measured in several animal studies by the feeding changes in a balanced standard …

Quality Of Life And Symptom Sharing Among Women With Athletic Urinary Incontinence, Hailey Stevens
Honors Theses and Capstones
Abstract
Introduction Women have a 2-3.5 times greater chance of urinary incontinence (UI) during exercise. Some high-impact activities are particularly provocative including gymnastics, trampoline, and volleyball. Athletic UI can cause frustration, worry, and embarrassment for women, negatively influencing their quality of life and sports performance. Methods This secondary analysis aimed to compare UI frequency with the amount of frustration, worry, and embarrassment (F/W/E) experienced by athletic and active women with UI. Data regarding the frequency of UI, management strategies, amount of F/W/E, and demographics from the Active Women’s Incontinence Screening Tool (AWIST) was analyzed. Data analysis was performed in Excel …

In the health care system, those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, (LGBTQ+) face discrimination and health disparities. Students who are better prepared in higher education to provide care for this population have higher levels of confidence in LGBTQ+ health content than those who have less exposure. Therefore, faculty who teach curriculum related to health and wellness have an opportunity to prepare students to provide high quality, patient centered care by teaching culturally competent care that is inclusive of LGBTQ+ populations. The aim of the study is to determine whether the degree of confidence in teaching LGBTQ+ health …

A Comparison Of Perceptions Of Labor Support Before And During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Sarah Grace Krein
Honors Theses and Capstones
Satisfaction with the experience of birth has been shown to be affected by the quality of support received by the birthing individual and how closely the experience aligns with their expectations. This is important because the hospital and societal restrictions put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic may have altered individuals’ experiences of birth during this time. This is further concerning as there is a known correlation between a negative birth experience and the risk for postpartum depression. This study aimed to identify birthing parents’ perceptions of support during birth and how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted support practices. A survey …

Abstract
Background: Pediatric psychiatric emergencies have been recognized as a national crisis in the United States (Roman et al., 2018). Emergency department (ED) visits for pediatric behavioral health (BH) conditions rose 31% from April 2020 to October 2020 (Bartek et al., 2021). This increase in ED visits for BH concerns, matched with overwhelmed inpatient psychiatric treatment centers and lacking community support programs, has resulted in an increase in BH ED boarders (Bartek et al., 2021). This population of patients who remain in the ED while awaiting placement at a psychiatric care program are at risk for prolonged boarding durations in …

Mindfulness And Pain Regulation: The Role Of Acceptance And Commitment Therapy For Individuals With Chronic Pain, Ariana C. White
Honors Theses and Capstones
Chronic pain is a significant and widely prevalent health condition which requires comprehensive care to address the many facets contributing to symptomatology. In 2016, 20% of American adults (about 50 million) reported experiencing chronic pain, of which 7.4% indicated that chronic pain frequently limited their life and participation in activities within the past 3 months (CDC, 2018). As a result, many individuals with chronic pain turn to opioid-based medication for pain relief, but long-term use of opioids actually increases pain sensation (Tobin, 2019). Moreover, opioid medication is unable to target underlying mental health components which emerge as part of chronic …
