Relationship Between Nordic Hamstring Strength And Maximal Voluntary Eccentric, Concentric And Isometric Knee Flexion Torque, Satoru Nishida, Masatoshi Nakamura, Ryosuke Kiyono, Shigeru Sato, Koki Yasaka, Riku Yoshida, Kazunori Nosaka
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Nordic hamstring exercise is performed to prevent knee flexor muscle strain injuries and used to assess their injury risks. However, what exactly Nordic hamstring strength indicates is not clear. We investigated the relationship between Nordic hamstring strength and maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) torque of the knee flexors measured by an isokinetic dynamometer. Sixteen healthy young men who had not experienced hamstring strain injuries participated in the study. In Nordic hamstring, each participant was instructed to lean forward as far as possible in 3 s (approximately 30/s), and force at the ankle joint of the dominant leg was measured during the …

Does Midwifery-Led Care Demonstrate Care Ethics: A Template Analysis, Kate Buchanan, Elizabeth Newnham, Deborah Ireson, Clare Davison, Sara Bayes
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Background: Ethical care in maternity is fundamental to providing care that both prevents harm and does good, and yet, there is growing acknowledgement that disrespect and abuse routinely occur in this context, which indicates that current ethical frameworks are not adequate. Care ethics offers an alternative to the traditional biomedical ethical principles.
Research aim: The aim of the study was to determine whether a correlation exists between midwifery-led care and care ethics as an important first step in an action research project.
Research design: Template analysis was chosen for this part of the action research. Template analysis is a design …

A Unique Sarcopenic Progression In The Mouse Rotator Cuff, Gretchen A Meyer, Karen C Shen
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: In response to chronic injury, the muscles of the rotator cuff (RC) experience a unique degeneration characterized by extensive fatty infiltration and loss of contractile function. Human studies suggest this degeneration is also a feature of RC sarcopenia and may precede RC injury. In this study, we investigated whether RC muscles exhibit a similar unique sarcopenia in the mouse.
METHODS: Male and female mice were subdivided into four age groups: 3, 9, 18, and 24 months. The supraspinatus (SS) and infraspinatus muscles of the RC and the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle of the hindlimb were assessed. Muscle mass, contractile …

The UK Biobank (UKB) is a highly promising dataset for brain biomarker research into population mental health due to its unprecedented sample size and extensive phenotypic, imaging, and biological measurements. In this study, we aimed to provide a shared foundation for UKB neuroimaging research into mental health with a focus on anxiety and depression. We compared UKB self-report measures and revealed important timing effects between scan acquisition and separate online acquisition of some mental health measures. To overcome these timing effects, we introduced and validated the Recent Depressive Symptoms (RDS-4) score which we recommend for state-dependent and longitudinal research in …

Uveal melanoma (UM) is the second most frequent type of melanoma. Therapeutic options for UM favor minimally invasive techniques such as irradiation for vision preservation. As a consequence, no tumor material is obtained. Without available tissue, molecular analyses for gene expression, mutation or copy number analysis cannot be performed. Thus, proper patient stratification is impossible and patients' uncertainty about their prognosis rises. Minimally invasive techniques have been studied for prognostication in UM. Blood-based biomarker analysis has become more common in recent years; however, no clinically standardized protocol exists. This review summarizes insights in biomarker analysis, addressing new insights in circulating …
Mathematics For The Masses: Door-To-Door Missionaries Of Math And Twelve-Step Recovery Programs, Daniel S. Helman
Mathematics For The Masses: Door-To-Door Missionaries Of Math And Twelve-Step Recovery Programs, Daniel S. Helman
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Conversion of strangers, or proselytizing, is a feature of a range of groups for religious, organizational and other aims. In twelve-step recovery programs, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, belief in a higher power is a requirement for working the steps to recovery. People are encouraged to find a higher power of their own understanding. This paper presents a model for using mathematics as a higher power, and shows how recovery works with mathematics in that role instead of a more traditional higher power such as God. A contemplative definition of math is given along with a description of a three-categoried epistemology: …

Over-The-Counter Analgesic Use Patterns In Appalachian Older Adults, Focusing On Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, Courtney Wellman Md, Jordan Ratcliffe Bs, William Rollyson Md, Adam M. Franks Md, Mike Grome Pa-C, Robert Walker Md
Marshall Journal of Medicine
Introduction
Over-the-counter (OTC) medications are commonly used by elderly patients to self-manage pain symptoms. Medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), acetaminophen and topical analgesics are readily available and therefore may seem harmless to patients. In the growing population of those 65 years and older, providers need to inquire about OTC medication use due to the increased risk for adverse reactions in this population. Complications related to these medications can be worsened by chronic disease, variable metabolism, polypharmacy, etc. which become more common in the older adults.
Methods
A survey was created to determine the prevalence and habits of OTC …

Marshall Journal of Medicine
Langerhans cells are dendritic cells that form the antigenic barrier of the human body. They occur in nearly any tissue but are most prevalent in the skin, submucosa of the bronchial tree, and other mucosae. Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH) develops when these cells damage the tissues in which they reside through a combination of inflammatory and monoclonal stimulation. The pulmonary variant of LCH involves the lung parenchyma and creates a wide variety of disturbances: pulmonary hypertension and both obstructive and restrictive lung disease. Osseous involvement, in addition to the pulmonary variant, presents with pulmonary masses and lytic bone lesions, which …

Motor Symptoms As A Prodrome To Schizophrenia, Adam Schindzielorz, Hunter Edwards, Kelly Melvin
Marshall Journal of Medicine
Schizophrenia occurs in 1% of the population and is severely impairing to those afflicted. Thereby, it is of the utmost importance to recognize and treat the disorder as early as possible. For the last several decades research has attempted to elucidate a variety of predictive factors in order to aid in the identification of patients at high risk of developing a schizophrenia spectrum disorder. These factors have included premorbid or prodromal movement symptoms. The literature has identified motor aberrations beginning early in life, in some cases even in infancy, ranging from neonatal hypotonicity to facial and upper body dyskinesia. …

The Role Of The Accessory Gene Regulator Operon In Biofilm Formation By Staphylococcus Aureus, Sarah C. Jordan
The Role Of The Accessory Gene Regulator Operon In Biofilm Formation By Staphylococcus Aureus, Sarah C. Jordan
Pharmaceutical Sciences ETDs
Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogenic bacteria that causes significant morbidity and mortality. As antibiotic resistance by S. aureus continues to be a serious concern, developing novel drug therapies to combat these infections is vital. Quorum sensing inhibitors (QSI) dampen S. aureus virulence and facilitate clearance by the host immune system by blocking quorum sensing signaling that promotes upregulation of the accessory gene regulator (agr) operon. While QSIs have shown therapeutic promise in mouse models of S. aureus infection, their further development has been hampered by the suggestion that agr inhibition promotes biofilm formation. In these studies, we investigated the relationship …

Archaea, once thought to only live in extreme environments, are present in many ecosystems, including the human microbiome, and they play important roles ranging from nutrient cycling to bioremediation. Yet this domain is often overlooked in microbiology classes and rarely included in laboratory exercises. Excluding archaea from high school and undergraduate curricula prevents students from learning the uniqueness and importance of this domain. Here, we have modified a familiar and popular microbiology experiment-the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion antibiotic susceptibility test-to include, together with the model bacterium Escherichia coli, the model archaeon Haloferax volcanii. Students will learn the differences and similarities between …

Recent studies have described a direct relationship between the illegal wildlife trade (IWT) and the prevalence of zoonotic pathogens in human populations. In the Philippines, the Philippine Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (PIDSR) framework outlines the monitoring, response, and management of disease outbreaks, but needs to be updated in the wake of zoonoses from IWT. Here, we identified zoonotic pathogens that may be introduced to human populations through the IWT, pinpointed potential outbreak hotspots, and provided recommendations on how to improve the Philippines’ public health response while considering One Health. Conformational Flexibility And Local Frustration In The Functional States Of The Sars-Cov-2 Spike B.1.1.7 And B.1.351 Variants: Mutation-Induced Allosteric Modulation Mechanism Of Functional Dynamics And Protein Stability, Gennady M. Verkhivker
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Structural and functional studies of the SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins have recently determined distinct functional states of the B.1.1.7 and B.1.351 spike variants, providing a molecular framework for understanding the mechanisms that link the effect of mutations with the enhanced virus infectivity and transmissibility. A detailed dynamic and energetic analysis of these variants was undertaken in the present work to quantify the effects of different mutations on functional conformational changes and stability of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. We employed the efficient and accurate coarse-grained (CG) simulations of multiple functional states of the D614G mutant, B.1.1.7 and B.1.351 spike variants to characterize …
