Innovations In Surgery Between The Past And Future: A Narrative Review Of Targeted Literature, Obada Hasan, Ahmed Ayaz, Laiba Masood, Abdul Mannan Baig, Naveed Baloch

Medical College Documents

Innovation is the introduction of a new method or technology designed to change the way things are done. History is full of remarkable innovations in surgery over the years as surgeons have always been innovating and pioneering latest techniques and equipment that can benefit the mankind. Though persistent, progress has been far from uniform. Despite all the bells and whistles that these innovations bring to the table, the little acknowledged fact is that they are only accessible to a very small proportion of the global population. Five billion people on this planet do not even have access to an operating …

Partial Treatment Response To Capmatinib In Met-Amplified Metastatic Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma: Case Report & Review Of Literature, Daniel S Lefler, Marni Brisson Tierno, Babar Bashir

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

Cholangiocarcinoma is a highly morbid gastrointestinal malignancy for which available therapies are limited. Standard of care includes cytotoxic chemotherapies such as gemcitabine, platinum agents, nab-paclitaxel, and fluoropyrimidine analogues. However, tolerability of these regimens varies, and patients who do not tolerate chemotherapy have limited targeted therapies and immunotherapy options. In cholangiocarcinoma, mesenchymal-epithelial transition factor (MET) amplification may present an additional opportunity for a targeted therapeutic approach, especially considering emerging data in non-small cell lung cancer. In this case, we present a metastatic cholangiocarcinoma patient with high-level MET gene amplification for whom capmatinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor with activity against c-MET, …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Genome wide association studies (GWASs) have identified tens of thousands of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with human diseases and characteristics. A significant fraction of GWAS findings can be false positives. The gold standard for true positives is an independent validation. The goal of this study was to identify SNP features associated with validation success. Summary statistics from the Catalog of Published GWASs were used in the analysis. Since our goal was an analysis of reproducibility, we focused on the diseases/phenotypes targeted by at least 10 GWASs. GWASs were arranged in discovery-validation pairs based on the time of publication, with …

Recent Insights Into The Role Of Glia And Oxidative Stress In Alzheimer’S Disease Gained From Drosophila, Lindsey D Goodman, Hugo J Bellen

Duncan NRI Faculty and Staff Publications

Here, we discuss findings made using Drosophila on Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk and progression. Recent studies have investigated the mechanisms underlying glia-mediated neuroprotection in AD. First, we discuss a novel mechanism of glial lipid droplet formation that occurs in response to elevated reactive oxygen species in neurons. The data suggest that disruptions to this process contribute to AD risk. We further discuss novel mechanistic insights into glia-mediated Aβ42-clearance made using the fly. Finally, we highlight work that provides evidence that the aberrant accumulation of reactive oxygen species in AD may not just be a consequence of disease but contribute to …
