Gender-Specific Effects On Muscle Activation During Incline Treadmill Walking: A Virtual Perturbation Study For Future Astronauts, Jie Hao, Robin High, Ka-Chun Siu

Posters and Presentations: Physical Therapy

Introduction Microgravity-induced muscle atrophy is a critical issue for astronauts in spaceflight [1]. To overcome neuromuscular deconditioning, combining virtual reality (VR) with treadmill training protocol could be a promising countermeasure for astronauts to enhance muscle activities and maximize the training effect [2]. Our previous study [3] found the presence of visual perturbation significantly increased muscle activation while walking on incline treadmill, compared with no visual perturbation; surprisingly, we found females had more pronounced muscle responses than males. Based upon these findings, this study aimed to investigate the effects of different visual rotation speeds and different types of visual perturbation on …

Tics manifest as brief, purposeless and unintentional movements or noises that, for many individuals, can be suppressed temporarily with effort. Previous work has hypothesized that the chaotic temporal nature of tics could possess an inherent fractality, that is, have neighbour-to-neighbour correlation at all levels of timescale. However, demonstrating this phenomenon has eluded researchers for more than two decades, primarily because of the challenges associated with estimating the scale-invariant, power law exponent-called the fractal dimension

Gene therapies aim to deliver a therapeutic payload to specified tissues with underlying protein deficiency. Since the 1990s, gene therapies have been explored as potential treatments for chronic conditions requiring lifetime care and medical management. Ocular gene therapies target a range of ocular disorders, but retinal diseases are of particular importance due to the prevalence of retinal disease and the current treatment burden of such diseases on affected patients, as well as the challenge of properly delivering these therapies to the target tissue. The purpose of this review is to provide an update on the most current data available for …

Vitamin D3 has many important health benefits. Unfortunately, these benefits are not widely known among health care personnel and the general public. As a result, most of the world’s population has serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations far below optimal values. This narrative review examines the evidence for the major causes of death including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, cancer, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and COVID-19 with regard to sub-optimal 25(OH)D concentrations. Evidence for the beneficial effects comes from a variety of approaches including ecological and observational studies, studies of mechanisms, and Mendelian randomization studies. Although randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are generally considered …

Section of Dental-Oral Maxillofacial Surgery

Artificial intelligence is the ability of machines to work like humans. The concept initially began with the advent of mathematical models which gave calculated outputs based on inputs fed into the system. This was later modified with the introduction of various algorithms which can either give output based on overall data analysis or by selection of information within previous data. It is steadily becoming a favoured mode of treatment due to its efficiency and ability to manage complex conditions in all specialities. In dentistry, artificial intelligence has also popularised over the past few decades. They have been found useful for …

Extubated Vv-Ecmo For Covid-19 Ards In An Immunosuppressed Pediatric Renal Transplant Patient., Johanna I. Orrick, Cara Holton, Tara Benton, Jenna Miller

Posters

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in adults is common, and outcomes are similar to those for non-COVID-19 ARDS on ECMO1. However, children are much less likely to have severe COVID-19 disease, and thus the need for extracorporeal support is rare2,3. Even pediatric solid organ transplant recipients with active COVID-19 infections typically do not require ECMO.4 We present the case of an immunosuppressed pediatric patient with COVID-19-related ARDS who had an excellent outcome on VV-ECMO. An 11-year-old female with a history of polycystic kidney disease status post renal transplant three years …

Wills Eye Hospital Papers

Vitreoretinal Lymphoma (VRL) is a rare ocular pathology that is notorious for mimicking chronic uveitis, which is a seemingly benign condition in comparison. The most common form of VRL is the diffuse large B-cell type, and there has been a high mortality rate. This dismal prognosis can be improved significantly if the disease is diagnosed early, but until now there is no consensus on an appropriate diagnostic algorithm. We conducted a retrospective search of PubMed Central® and analyzed results from thirty-three studies that were published between 2011–2021. The chosen studies incorporated some popular testing tools for VRL, and our analyses …

Marburg, a RNA virus (MRV), is responsible for causing hemorrhagic fever that affects humans and non-human primates. World Health Organization (WHO), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Centre of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considered this as an extremely dangerous virus, thus categorised as risk group 4, category A priority pathogen and category “A” bioterrorism agent, respectively. Despite of all these alarming concerns, no prophylaxis arrangements are available against this virus till date. In fact, the construction of immunogenic vaccine candidates by traditional molecular immunology methods is time consuming and very expensive. Considering these concerns, herein, we have designed CD4 …
