Pharmacy Faculty Publications and Presentations
Kinases act as molecular switches for cellular functions and are involved in multiple human pathogeneses, most notably cancer. There is a continuous need for soluble and active kinases for in-vitro drug discovery and structural biology purposes. Kinases remain challenging to express using Escherichia coli, the most widely utilized host for heterologous expression. In this work, four bacterial strains, BL21 (DE3), BL21 (DE3) pLysS, Rosetta, and Arctic Express, were chosen for parallel expression trials along with BL21 (DE3) complemented with folding chaperones DnaJ/K and GroEL/ES to compare their performance in producing soluble and active human kinases. Three representative diverse kinases were …
Progression Of Peripheral Arterial Disease, Shuvangee Dhar
Progression Of Peripheral Arterial Disease, Shuvangee Dhar
Senior Theses
Amputation due to complications related to vascular diseases such as peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is rising across the nation, especially in South Carolina. PAD can not only lead to severe outcomes such as gangrene and death but sometimes also leave patients with the sole option of amputation, which can decrease quality of life and increase the financial burden on the patient. In light of the growing amputation trend and the increasing prevalence of PAD, this research project aimed to assess the utility of calcification scores and plasma protein biomarkers such as thrombospondin-1 and osteoactivin as potential indicators of PAD progression. …

Each examined community exhibited characteristics contributing to heightened social vulnerability, potentially causing increased susceptibility to negative health outcomes from exposure to hazardous waste.
Examination Of Energy Needs In Male And Female Physically Active Individuals, Savanna Griffin
Examination Of Energy Needs In Male And Female Physically Active Individuals, Savanna Griffin
Senior Theses
Content: The Female Athlete Triad refers to three interrelated components: 1) low energy availability (LEA), with or without an eating disorder (ED); 2) harmful and physiologically impactful hormonal changes; and 3) alterations in bone mineral density, which are often experienced by individuals engaged in organized sports or other intense physical activities. This phenomenon is called the Female Athlete Triad because the relationship of components has thus far been observed primarily in females. A new term, the Male Athlete Triad, has been recently developed to describe the same phenomenon in males. LEA occurs when dietary energy intake (EI) is inadequate to …

A Meshless Approach To Computational Pharmacokinetics, Anthony Matthew Khoury
A Meshless Approach To Computational Pharmacokinetics, Anthony Matthew Khoury
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The meshless method is an incredibly powerful technique for solving a variety of problems with unparalleled accuracy and efficiency. The pharmacokinetic problem of transdermal drug delivery (TDDD) is one such topic and is of significant complexity. The locally collocated meshless method (LCMM) is developed in solution to this topic. First, the meshless method is formulated to model this transport phenomenon and is then validated against an analytical solution of a pharmacokinetic problem set, to demonstrate this accuracy and efficiency. The analytical solution provides a locus by which convergence behavior are evaluated, demonstrating the super convergence of the locally collocated meshless …

The Solace Of Grey: Yogic Perspectives On Healing Through Complex Trauma, Xyloh Gargiulo
LMU Theses and Dissertations
Through perspectives from neuroscience, transpersonal psychology, and transcendentalist philosophy, the art of yoga is proposed as a supporting modality for healing through complex trauma. Personal narrative and original paintings further speak to a process of coming back Home. Where trauma strips one of self, yoga breeds connection back to Self. Yoga is union of individual consciousness with universal consciousness. Yogic philosophy invites one into a space of grey, somewhere between object and subject, physical and spiritual, tangible and ineffable. It is there one comes to find healing by sitting back as a pure observer. In the journey of trauma uncovery, …
