Purpose:
This study examined performance of dual language learners (DLLs) on Spanish- and English-language narrative story retells and unique tells. Transcription and analysis focused on comparisons of common microstructural language sample measures in Spanish and English across tasks. Each language sample measure was evaluated for its possible convergence with norm-referenced standardized assessments for DLL children.
Method:
Spanish–English DLLs (N = 133) enrolled in English-only kindergarten or first-grade classrooms completed two-language sample tasks (one in each language), which were transcribed and analyzed using Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts (Miller & Iglesias, 2017) for measures of syntactic complexity (mean length of …

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) has excellent control rates compared to nonvirally associated OPSCC. Multiple trials are actively testing whether de-escalation of treatment intensity for these patients can maintain oncologic equipoise while reducing treatment-related toxicity. We have developed OP-TIL, a biomarker that characterizes the spatial interplay between tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and surrounding cells in histology images. Herein, we sought to test whether OP-TIL can segregate stage I HPV-associated OPSCC patients into low-risk and high-risk groups and aid in patient selection for de-escalation clinical trials.
METHODS: Association between OP-TIL and patient outcome was explored on whole slide …

BACKGROUND: N-Myc downstream regulated gene 1 (NDRG1) suppresses metastasis in many human malignancies, including breast cancer, yet has been associated with worse survival in patients with inflammatory breast cancer. The role of NDRG1 in the pathobiology of aggressive breast cancers remains elusive.
METHODS: To study the role of NDRG1 in tumor growth and brain metastasis in vivo, we transplanted cells into cleared mammary fat pads or injected them in tail veins of SCID/Beige mice (n = 7-10 per group). NDRG1 protein expression in patient breast tumors (n = 216) was assessed by immunohistochemical staining. Kaplan-Meier method with 2-sided log-rank test …

Glycomic Biomarkers Are Instrumental For Suboptimal Health Status Management In The Context Of Predictive, Preventive, And Personalized Medicine, Xiaoni Meng, Biyan Wang, Xizhu Xu, Manshu Song, Haifeng Hou, Wei Wang, Youxin Wang
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Objectives: Suboptimal health status (SHS), a reversible borderline condition between optimal health status and disease, has been recognized as a main risk factor for non-communicable diseases (NCDs). From the standpoint of predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM/3PM), the early detection of SHS provides a window of opportunity for targeted prevention and personalized treatment of NCDs. Considering that immunoglobulin G (IgG) N-glycosylation levels are associated with NCDs, it can be speculated that IgG N-glycomic alteration might occur at the SHS stage.
Methods: A case–control study was performed and it consisted of 124 SHS individuals and 124 age-, gender-, and body mass …

Evidence-Based Best Practice Toolkit For Competency-Based Orientation In Integrating An Adult Pneumococcal Protocol To Improve Vaccine Rate: A Program Evaluation Review, Magda Angel Cifuentes
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: Low pneumococcal vaccine uptake among high-risk adults is partly due to underutilized or lack of nurse-driven vaccine protocols, limited understanding of vaccine intervals and indications by nurses, and lack of proper training. Currently, physician-driven orders are the only avenue for high-risk adults to obtain this vaccine in ambulatory sites.
PICOT: In adults 65 years or older within an ambulatory setting, does the use of an adult pneumococcal vaccine protocol, compared to a physician order (no vaccine protocol) impact the rate of vaccination over 2 months?
Evidence: Utilization of two or more interventions provided higher immunization rates. …

Nicu Nurses’ Varying Levels Of And Experiences With Moral Distress While Caring For Infants With Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Sarah Battaglia
Honors Scholar Theses
Background: Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) is both a physical and psychological dependence on opioids. When a woman with OUD becomes pregnant, Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) can occur in her child. NAS occurs when the infant shows manifestations of withdrawal, due to the exposure to opioids in the womb being abruptly discontinued once born. Nurses that care for mothers with OUD and their infants with NAS report varying degrees of moral distress related to preexisting stigmas, a lack of education on the chronic disease of addiction, and the multitude of ethical dilemmas experienced while caring for this vulnerable population of mothers …

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Introduction
People living in obesogenic environments, with limited access to healthful food outlets and exercise facilities, generally have poor health. Previous research suggests that behavioral risk factors and indicators of physiological functioning may mediate this link; however, no studies to date have had the requisite data to investigate multi-level behavioral and physiological risk factors simultaneously. The present study conducted serial and parallel mediation analyses to examine behavioral and physiological pathways explaining the association between environmental obesogenicity and cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Methods
This cross-sectional observational study used data from the 2012–2016 Health and Retirement Study, a representative survey of US older …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
The largest US cancer health disparity exists in prostate cancer, with Black men having more than a two-fold increased risk of dying from prostate cancer compared to all other races. This disparity is a result of a complex network of factors including socioeconomic status (SES), environmental exposures, and genetics/biology. Inequity in the US healthcare system has emerged as a major driver of disparity in prostate cancer outcomes and has raised concerns that the actual incidence rates may be higher than current estimates. However, emerging studies argue that equalizing healthcare access will not fully eliminate racial health disparities and highlight the …

Giant pancreatic pseudocysts are considered those cysts whose dimensions exceed 10 cm and are sporadically reported in the literature. Although there are multiple treatment modalities, there are currently no treatment guidelines or consensus on the best therapeutic approach for giant pancreatic pseudocysts. We report the case of a 32-year-old male patient with a giant pancreatic pseudocyst after an episode of acute pancreatitis, which was treated by internal surgical drainage through cyst-jejunal anastomosis. This surgical procedure was followed by the formation of a retroperitoneal abscess which was resolved by ultrasound-guided drainage. The subsequent evolution of the patient was favorable, without other …

Gastrointestinal metastases from cutaneous melanoma are rare and usually asymptomatic, with most patients not being clinically diagnosed throughout their lifetime. We report a case of how melanoma may metastasize insidiously in the small bowel. Unexplained iron deficiency anemia was assumed to be the result of underlying gastrointestinal bleeding. Therefore, the diagnosis of jejunal metastasis from cutaneous melanoma was suggested based on imaging findings and made through the histopathological examination. According to the international guidelines, the patient underwent the complete excision of the primary tumor and therapeutic lymph node dissection. Furthermore, an adjuvant treatment was required to reduce the risk of …
