FCoV viruses exhibit great genetic diversity, leading to the presence of FIPV-causing variants. Current molecular evolution analysis and genetic variation studies of FCoV in China are predominately focused on gene encoding the spike protein or other structural proteins, while few studies have evaluated genetic variations in nonstructural FCoV genes, which can play an important role in disease pathogenesis. In this study, the gene encoding the open reading frame (ORF) 7b nonstructural FCoV protein of the Chinese Fujian strain FJLY20201 was amplified from the ascitic fluid of a Chinese domestic cat infected with FIPV and compared with ORF 7b from previously …

Immunochromatographic Test (Ict) For The Detection Of Antibody Against Alv-J, Guihua Wang, Yanming Wang, Ziqiang Cheng

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

ALV-J is an important pathogen in the poultry industry in China. In this study, we developed an immunochromatographic test (ICT) assay for the detection of antibody against of ALV-J to evaluate ALV-J infection. Gp85 protein of ALV-J was employed as a capture antigen. Antigen-antibody reaction was detected by either colloidal-gold conjugated gp85 protein or monoclonal antibody of ALV-J. The high consistency of results in ICT and ELISA indicated that the ICT is reliable. This suggests that the gp85-based ICT can be used as a rapid on-site diagnostic method of ALV-J.

Investigation Of The Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of The Domestic Cat’S Paw Pads, Ye Mei Jun 2022

Investigation Of The Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of The Domestic Cat’S Paw Pads, Ye Mei

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Domestic cats have a biological function such as cushioning when they are jumping or walking which is mainly due to the biological coupling system formed in the long-term evolution process of nature, including the trunk-leg-paw pad structure. Among them, the paw pad, as the only part of the body that directly contacts with the ground in the process of movement, plays a key role in its biological function. Hence, in order to clarify the micro structure, mechanical properties and functional characteristics of the paw pad and reveal the relationship between it and the domestic cat’s biological function, this paper has …

Mucosal Immunology Of The Ocular Surface, Cintia S De Paiva, Anthony J St Leger, Rachel R Caspi

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The eye is a sensory organ exposed to the environment and protected by a mucosal tissue barrier. While it shares a number of features with other mucosal tissues, the ocular mucosal system, composed of the conjunctiva, Meibomian glands, and lacrimal glands, is specialized to address the unique needs of (a) lubrication and (b) host defense of the ocular surface. Not surprisingly, most challenges, physical and immunological, to the homeostasis of the eye fall into those two categories. Dry eye, a dysfunction of the lacrimal glands and/or Meibomian glands, which can both cause, or arise from, sensory defects, including those caused …

Cataracts are a leading cause of preventable blindness globally. Although care varies between developing and industrialized countries, surgery is the single effective approach to treating cataracts. From the earliest documented primitive cataract removals to today's advanced techniques, cataract surgery has evolved dramatically. As surgical techniques have developed, so have approaches to surgical pain management. With current cataract surgical procedures and advanced technology, anesthesia and intraoperative pain management have shifted to topical/intracameral anesthetics, with or without low-dose systemic analgesia and anxiolysis. Despite this, pain and discomfort persist in some patients and are underappreciated in modern cataract surgery. Although pain management has …

Fibrosis is the life-threatening, excessive accumulation of the extracellular matrix and is sometimes associated with a loss of lipid-filled cells in the skin and other organs. Understanding the mechanisms of fibrosis and associated lipodystrophy and their reversal may reveal new targets for therapeutic intervention. In vivo genetic models are needed to identify key targets that induce recovery from established fibrosis. Wnt signaling is activated in animal and human fibrotic diseases across organs. Here, we developed a genetically inducible and reversible Wnt activation model and showed that it is sufficient to cause fibrotic dermal remodeling, including extracellular matrix expansion and shrinking …

The uterine luminal epithelium folds characteristically in mammals, including humans, horses and rodents. Improper uterine folding in horses results in pregnancy failure, but the precise function of folds remains unknown. Here, we uncover dynamic changes in the 3D uterine folding pattern during early pregnancy with the entire lumen forming pre-implantation transverse folds along the mesometrial-antimesometrial axis. Using a time course, we show that transverse folds are formed before embryo spacing, whereas implantation chambers form as the embryo begins attachment. Thus, folds and chambers are two distinct structures. Transverse folds resolve to form a flat implantation region, after which an embryo …

Neurovascular Abnormalities In Retinopathy Of Prematurity And Emerging Therapies, Chang Dai, Jun Xiao, Chenguang Wang, Wei Li, Guanfang Su Jun 2022

Neurovascular Abnormalities In Retinopathy Of Prematurity And Emerging Therapies, Chang Dai, Jun Xiao, Chenguang Wang, Wei Li, Guanfang Su

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Blood vessels in the developing retina are formed in concert with neural growth, resulting in functional neurovascular network. Disruption of the neurovascular coordination contributes to the pathogenesis of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a potentially blinding retinal neovascular disease in preterm infants that currently lacks an approved drug therapy in the USA. Despite vasculopathy as predominant clinical manifestations, an increasing number of studies revealed complex neurovascular interplays among neurons, glial cells and blood vessels during ROP. Coordinated expression of glia-derived vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in spatio-temporal gradients is pivotal to the formation of well-organized vascular plexuses in the healthy retina, …

Comparative Ligandomics Implicates Secretogranin Iii As A Disease-Restricted Angiogenic Factor In Laser-Induced Choroidal Neovascularization, Liyang Ji, Prabuddha Waduge, Wencui Wan, Hong Tian, Jin Li, Jinsong Zhang, Rui Chen, Wei Li

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) is a leading cause of vision loss in the elderly. All approved anti-angiogenic drug therapies for CNV target vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) but confer limited efficacy. Identification of other CNV-related angiogenic factors will facilitate the development of VEGF-independent alternative therapies. Here, we applied comparative ligandomics to live mice with or without laser-induced CNV for global mapping of CNV-selective endothelial ligands. Secretogranin III (Scg3) previously identified by the same approach as a diabetes-restricted angiogenic factor was mapped with more than 935-fold increase in binding to CNV vessels compared to healthy choriocapillaris. A novel in vivo ligand binding …

An Introduction To Biosimilars For The Treatment Of Retinal Diseases: A Narrative Review, Seenu M Hariprasad, Richard P Gale, Christina Y Weng, Hans C Ebbers, Mourad F Rezk, Ramin Tadayoni

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Biological therapies have revolutionized the treatment of disease across a number of therapeutic areas including retinal diseases. However, on occasion, such treatments may be relatively more expensive compared to small molecule therapies. This can restrict patient access and treatment length leading to suboptimal clinical outcomes. Several biosimilar candidates of ranibizumab and aflibercept are currently in development and the first biosimilar of ranibizumab received EMA approval in August and FDA approval in September 2021. Biosimilars are biological medicines that are highly similar to an already-approved biological medicine (reference product). The physicochemical and clinical similarity of a biosimilar is determined by a …

Why Not Dipyridamole: A Review Of Current Guidelines And Re-Evaluation Of Utility In The Modern Era, Mahmoud Allahham, A Lerman, D Atar, Y Birnbaum

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Dipyridamole is an old anti-platelet and coronary vasodilator agent that inhibits platelet phosphodiesterase and increases interstitial adenosine levels. Its use in coronary artery disease (CAD) has fallen out of practice in the modern era with the advent of new anti-platelet agents, and most modern guidelines on the management of CAD either neglect to comment on its utility or outright recommend against it. The majority of the studies used in these guidelines are outdated and took place in an era when high doses of aspirin were used and statins were not widely utilized. There is growing evidence in rat models of …

Horizontal Gene Transfer Provides Insights Into The Deep Evolutionary History And Biology Of Trichinella, Dante Zarlenga, Peter Thompson, Makedonka Mitreva, Bruce A Rosa, Eric Hoberg

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Evolution involves temporal changes in the characteristics of a species that are subsequently propagated or rejected through natural selection. In the case of parasites, host switching also plays a prominent role in the evolutionary process. These changes are rooted in genetic variation and gene flow where genes may be deleted, mutated (sequence), duplicated, rearranged and/or translocated and then transmitted through vertical gene transfer. However, the introduction of new genes is not driven only by Mendelian inheritance and mutation but also by the introduction of DNA from outside a lineage in the form of horizontal gene transfer between donor and recipient …

Joint Eanm, Snmmi And Iaea Enabling Guide: How To Set Up A Theranostics Centre, Ken Herrmann, Richard L Wahl, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The theranostics concept using the same target for both imaging and therapy dates back to the middle of the last century, when radioactive iodine was first used to treat thyroid diseases. Since then, radioiodine has become broadly established clinically for diagnostic imaging and therapy of benign and malignant thyroid disease, worldwide. However, only since the approval of SSTR2-targeting theranostics following the NETTER-1 trial in neuroendocrine tumours and the positive outcome of the VISION trial has theranostics gained substantial attention beyond nuclear medicine. The roll-out of radioligand therapy for treating a high-incidence tumour such as prostate cancer requires the expansion of …
